Hey guys, I read a post somewhere saying that your EGT's are actually lower after you go turbo. Is this true? Even for a stage 1er like me? If so could someone give me a quick explanation? Thanks.

Actually, if your engine and fuel system are tuned properly, EGT's will almost be identical N/A and after a turbo install. The EGT's will indeed climb up at a higher rate as you boost the engine, but the EGT numbers should be close to that of NA engines. EGT's are mainly affected by the air/fuel ratio, not being turbo or non turbo

What are they now?
When my car is warmed up it's between 1000-1100, normal driving 1300. Then in 5th I get 1400's. Going up hills it goes up to 1600. I hate the fact that after 3rd gear pulls, it doesn't take long for me to be 1600. What can we do to lower them? Is that about average range and all that I can do is let off the gas? Just curious about temps above 120mph.}(

Your car seems to running a little warm to me or I am running a bit rich. It is probably me running a bitch rich but here are my exhaust temperature numbers:

Startup: 800 degrees then goes to 900 degrees after 5-10 minute warmup
Cruising @ 35 mph: approximately 1050 - 1100 (level ground)
Cruising @ 70 mph: about 1250 - 1300 degrees (level ground)
Going uphill @ 70 mph: about 1400 degrees

I don't like to go higher than 1500 degrees as I don't think that is good for stock internals - just my opinion - and it doesn't come close as long as I don't boost at 70 mph. I would like to hear what the temperatures are for a stock engine without a turbo to see if I am in the right range.

My EGT's are just about identical to yours Kurt. Those are right where they should be really.

Don't take this the wrong way Matt as I am just kidding with you but I don't know if that is a good thing or a bad thing with your current luck :). We will just blame the blown piston on the Vortech to make me feel better.

Actually, in all seriousness, thanks for the comparison and I always appreciate your help - which has been many times now. I was always curious to what other people running similar setups have for EGT numbers.

Hahah yeah, actually, the SFMU was not working properly, but it did supply enough fuel pressure when i tested it, but it was acting goofy as hell. I put about 5 psi boost on the engine(yeah im still boosting a little haha) and the fuel pressure didnt rise for shit. I could hear/see the boost and boost gauge go up, but didnt go anywhere. Did it again, and it was fine, fuel went up. Pretty much found out my diaprham in the SFMU is kida messed up for some reason. Prob taken apart too many times, and useing all differnt kinds of disks. The diaphram stiffend up a little for some reason..oh well :) The donor block is currently getting machined :P

my stock egt's would peak at abotu 1550 under full load going liek 100 mph back in the day. I try to keep my egt's now around 1500 in the exhaust manifold. 1600 is too high to be safe.

I have yet to see over 1500* at 7 pounds of boost with 110 psi of fuel and I have run mine hard from a rolling start to 110 mph +. My Idle and cruise temps are the same as KTECLIPSE. From what I have read in the past 1600* or more is too high for our cars.

Yes, you should really stay away from running 1600 degrees at WOT, ESP on a stock motor. If the motor is built with forged internals, then its not so bad, but its still pretty hot. I have found that perfect tuning, for really good HP, the egt's will be around 1550 at WOT, but stays there. I would recomend to anyone with a stock engine, to run around 1500-1525 degrees EGT's at WOT. If you hit 1600, then richen up the fuel a little bit.

One thing I don't understand, is that the melting point of aluminum is 1220.58 degrees Fahrenheit. So how is it that your forged aluminum pistons are okay at 1500 degrees, and when you finally get to 1600 then you start worrying?

Granted, 1220 degrees if for pure Al. But even with the small amount of silicon added (what is it, like 12%), does the melting point change that much? If it does, I guess I answered my own question
