3932, Dealership said Turbo from a 97gst would work on a 98 RS Posted by Jenny, Apr-18-01 08:27 AM
I called the dealership today and talked to this man about putting the stock gst turbo system on my RS. They said that it wouldnt bolt on exactly right but by getting new piping it would work. They also said that it would mess up some sensors in my car so i'd need to replace those. If this is all that needs to be done then isnt buying some guys stock turbo system(turbo, side mounts and intercooler with 4k miles) for $200 a good deal?

Even if it was possible the price of the custom manifold would be very high. More importantly, our engines have a higher compression than the GS-T's and GSX's. And correct me if I am wrong but the stock turbo on a GS-T puts out around 14psi. That would be too much for the 420a with out some internal mods. I am just learning about turbos but I think your best bet would be to go with a kit made for our cars not the stock GS-T turbo. Just my .02

LAST EDITED ON 18-Apr-01 AT 02:06 PM (PST)LMAO! I have heard it all from the dealer now. There is now way in hell the turbo will just "bolt right up" we have a completely differant motor. As mentioned a custom manifold would have to be made, and although the cost of it is not too bad, all the "little" nuts and bolts and lines ext....... are going to take a while for you to get as well as cost some $$$$. I just finished a cutom install for a friend that went with the T-25 and let me tell you that if we had to do it all over again we would have just went with a kit. I myself have the HRC kit, and for the most part is a bolt on afair. :) Save up some cash and do things the easy and right way. Of coarse there is nothing wrong with being custom, in fact its awesome to say it, but I would only go the custom route if for some reason the kits were not available or I had something totaly differant in mind. Good luck in what you decide. SEE YA!!!!!!!!!!MWC P.S the boost level on the wastgate for the T-25 I believe is more around 9 PSI, which is a little high but it is a T-25 so its not like boosting 9 psi on a S-16G. Never the less I recomend Pistons/rods before the turbo is the best way about it. http://smkn95eclipsemwc.homestead.com/mainpage.html

Your dealers a fool but I'd still buy the turbo and intercooler for $200 if in good condition if not just to sell it and make a $25 profit. Its been said mitsu turbos can actually mount to the stock 420A manifold with only mild modification to the manifold so maybe the dealer isn't exactly crazy but irrisponsible for telling you that (incidently there are a number of turbo kits for other cars that use a stock manifold and some kind of adapter as the basis for turbo mounting).
BTW MWC I forgot all about the gasket thingy (working 16hr straight and recieving turbo kits throws your memory. I WILL send the money out tommorow).

I run a t25 turbo off an eclipse it pulls pretty hard for a small turbo the dealer was maybe giving you some ideas on how to cutom turbocharge your car the 4g63turbo manifold does not bolt onto our carz but I was thinking of cutting the flange and have our flange welded to it.I have a custom manifold and run a custom kit using the gst turbo. If your not a mechanic I would suggest buying the kit.Oh yeah guyz I will post up new pics of my second manifold it is real freaking tubular looking this weekend.I ran a civic coupe with a type R motor this weekend he beat me by a fender so the second time we ran I poked a whole on my vaccume line to the waste gate and I freaking smoked him buy like 4 carz my boost gauge read about15 to 16 pounds I guess that is equivalent to a 16g running 7 to 8 pounds because of the flow rate. my car runs smooth and I have no problems with it and I have 113000 miles but I'm also a mechanic so I keep a good eye out and monitor my engine real well for that price I would get that turbo just to mess around with it my next goal is to get a 16g

It could be done, but a kit for the car would probably be cheaper and more effective. Like it wassaid, you could not run stock amounts of boost, so you would still be less than a GS-T. Get a star or HRC. I am still thinking between which one.

I look at like this. It can be done. Anything can be done if you really want to, but I am not so sure I would go that route. Consider that it is well know how inefficient a T-25 and the stock intercooler are. These pieces are quickly chunked by 2G GS-T owners for a reason. Running 14psi is actually possible on our engine because it is about cfm's not the amount of boost. That is the same reason I suspect the T03/04 hybrids the Star guys are using is really only safe for about 7psi and the S-16G is good for about 1-2psi more on a Stage II stock setup. (yeah, yeah, people may be running more, but I am talking safe repeatable here) A t-25 running 14psi will not dyno more than a S-16G running 8psi anyway and that is part of the problem. It is already running out of its efficiency range. If you were to ever want to take this farther, you would have to chunk the turbo and intercooler and start with a new setup again anyway. I think just going the bolt on kit route is still the best too.

murix is right if I had to do all over again I would of started out with a bigass turbo but since I had the resources here in my town I put together a turbo kit for about 1350 so still upgrading to a 16g turbo for about $588 would still put me well beneith 2000 dollars with a nice front mount intercooler and a greddy type S blowoff valve and all of my fuel system is brand new.If you don't have hookups like me or mechanical aptitude just get the kit dude it will save you alota headache
