Is the only difference between a stage 1 and 2 is that that stage 2 comes with an Intercooler?

Indeed, that's why if you wanna be cheap, just get a 1G sidemount intercooler and custom piping. I paid about 80 bucks for piping and 60 bucks for the intercooler minus a manual boost controller. That's 140 bucks for a Stage 2 setup, far cheaper than the 800 dollar price tag that HRC placed on their intercooler upgrade.

cause Hahn said its easy to upgrade from stage 1 to 2 to 3 to 4 etc... they make their kits like that
so if i bought a stage 1, all i need to do is get a intercooler and a new wastegate?

mitsu turbos have internal wastegates. you dont replace it. you just get a manual boost controller to raise to the boost level. and yes you will need the intercooler and necessary piping, couplers, etc.

HRC's stage 2 upgrade includes a upgraded wastegate actuator that opens the wastegate at 8 psi instead of the 5 with the stage 1 kit. it also comes with a side mount intercooler with nice looking piping. i wanted to keep the ability to set my boost to 5psi, so i got a mechanical boost controller, a 1g SMIC, and custom piping for a grand total of around $350. the piping was the most expensive part, $200 for everything, but the boost controller and the intercooler where cheap. $80 each. you could skimp by doing the piping yourself if you have a bender or by purchasing pre-made bends. the home depot boost controller seems like it should work pretty well too.

wait... so out of the box u are stuck at 8psi without a boost controller? i'm confused.. i only wanted to run 7psi...

Stage 1 kit comes with a 5 psi wastegate actuator, to let you run 5 psi, no less. Stage 2 kit comes with a 8 psi actuator to let you run 8 psi, no less. YOu cant go below the wastegate's spring setting, which in this case is either 5 or 8 psi. To run additional boost on either actuator, all you need is a boost controller. A boost controller basically limits the amount of boost signal that goes to the wastegate, so that it makes the wastegate think its not at its spring setting. If you want to run 7 psi, then get the 5 psi wastegate actuator in your stage 2 kit, you may have to talk to HRC about that, if its possible. Then you can use a boost controller to up the boost to your desired level (7psi).

somoene mentioned that our engines can only handle up to 9psi boost...
now i know if we go and change the pistons and all that good stuff we can handle more but my question is, is if i installed a stage 2 running 8 psi...
wouldnt that technically still be alot of stress on teh engine being so close to 9? i mean, doesnt that mean the engine is always working close to its limit therefore runs a higher risk of blowing?

420As can take 10 but thats the limit, you can prolly get away with more if you have bigger injectors and richen the mix, but I wouldnt risk it. Ring lands dont like high PSI, and the bottom end kit fixes that.
there is a difference between 8,9, and 10 PSI ... its kinda like a the speed limit near a police officer, you can prolly get away with goin 60 (9PSI) in a 55(8PSI), but 65(10PSI) is out of the question =)
I'll be running a STAR stage 1 with a starion FMIC (FMIC + piping = 260 shipping MUCH better then the 700 or so STAR wanted) at 7 or 8 PSI until I get bigger injectors and a bottom end rebuild (later this summer)
start low and slowy increase the boost, if you think your engine cant take it, dont risk it and turn back the boost. If you take care of it, it will take care of you
