38561, Question on Star kit/injectors
Posted by turbolover2, Feb-03-03 08:08 PM
A friend of mine has a Star stage 2 kit installed on his 98 NT. He has stock injectors and uses an HKS AFR to up the fuel 10% across the board. At 5psi, at higher RPMs (above 4k), he's lean (0.88v). At 8psi, he stumbles and bucks. I datalogged the car for him, and from what I've read here about the stock injectots, I figured he'd need an upgrade to fix the problem. I told him to use Accell 240cc injectors. I just wanted to make sure I'm on the right track. Thanks for any help.

His fuel pump may not be able to supply sufficient pressure for the stock injectors. I'd say get some larger injetors and not sure if that fpr is adjustable or not but grab a new afpr.

Is he using the fuel system that came with the Star kit? He'd at least want 315cc injectors if not some 440cc ones.

The 315's or 30 lbs. is the max we can use w\o some type of fuel controller (SAFC, etc...)!!!!

He's using what came with the kit which is an upgraded pump and FPR. It doesn't come with injectors. He's not looking to run very high boost, maybe 6-7 pounds, which is why I recommended the 240cc ones. From what I've read here, the stock injectors should be adequate for the stage 2 kit, but at higher than stock fuel pressures they lose efficiency. So, I figured since the Accell 240s are only slightly bigger than stock, but can handle higher FPs, they would be good to use with no fuel control (even though he has an HKS AFR, but we'll just use that to fine tune).

Thanks for the help guys.

You CAN run 440's with a SFMU and no SAFC...just run low idle FP.

stock injectors are 235cc, an upgrade to 240cc injectors isnt worth the time or money.

go w/ at least 270's, but prefferably 315's (if not bigger)

Never solely rely on the a/f monitor to tune your car. Unless it's a wideband, they can be very innaccurate and unreliable.

Use an EGT gauge instead.

(none of this of course supercedes the other advice given in the thread in regards to fuel upgrades. Without larger injectors, better fuel pumping or better FMU's, you'll be limited in terms of fueling.)
