Not trying to be a dick or anything, its just that I am in the process right now of putting together mny custom deal and it sucks. A lot of planning, a lot of questions that need asked and not a whole lot of people to answer them.

If I could go back I would just buy a kit. I have too much invested at this point to turn back now though.

Why is it costing you so much?

aaron, if you dont mind me asking, how did you get a figure that low? ive planned mine out pretty good, got some stuff cheap, free, or less than i was expecting and im still running about $1900 ±$100 for a stage 2.
but to answer blitzeclipse99's question, i think its one of those questions if you have to ask, you dont need to do that project, you should just get a kit. dig through this forum, and you will find everything you need, if you really want to do a custom kit.

Well for one I an using a t-25 so things are weird like the downpipe and whatnot. I'll end up spending like 1300 bucks. Its just that a kit is a no brainer, everything you need is right there, and you only buy additional parts if you want to. Just wait until you start buying stuff, there are a ton of fittings and stuff that you don't think about right away. I actualyl retract my statement, I would still do the custom thing again, I was just really frustrated with the whole thing last night.

The basic ingredients are manifold, turbo(and exernal wastegate if the turbo is internally gated), Exhuast piping, intercooler, intercooler piping, BOV, and fuel system.

Yeah, the details about the fittings and lines get a little tedious sometimes. I'm having fun with it. You can definately save money going the custom route. I like that part about it, but for me it's also very gratifying to know that I can do it.

I'll probably end up spending around $2500(definately under $3000) by the time I'm done, but I'll have a kick ass fuel system, easily upgradeable turbo, nice exhaust, loud BOV, and all of the gauges that I want. But just so you know - here's what I want.

Custom 14b(ported) turbo system w/modified 1g SMIC
Mandrel 3" stainless steel exhaust
Mandrel 2.25" IC piping
8-injector fuel system w/034 Supplimentary Injector ECU
Walbro 255 high pressure
3/8 inch fuel lines from the tank forward
high flow fuel filter
engine bay fuel pressure gauge
Turbo XS RFL BOV
Autometer Z-Series Boost, A/F(full-throttle modified), EGT, Oil pressure, Fuel pressure gauges in the cab.
Compaq laptop w/4port serial card - for datalogging and programming/monitoring 034 ECU(and someday after a rebuild for programming an aftermarket ignition - not now though)

You can't buy a pre-made kit like that. You have to build it. Also, it wouldn't be under 3 bills if there was such a kit.

i am currently building my custom turbo kit .. so far this is what i have..

manifold from turbonetics (same manifold from the star kit...- turbonetics makes em for star)
turbo is also from trubonetics.. (t3 exhaust/t04e inlet hybrid)..
HRC FM w/ piping...
turbo xs RFL BOV
already have installed my WALBRO high flow fuel pump..
GREDDY boost and egt gauges
TIAL external wastegate

still need things like EMU/ECU
fuel controller
boost controller.. (i dont know what i'm getting yet..but will have it all done before i take the car home)

so far thats what i have.. the car is in the shop now being built.. but it is costing me 3500 including install..
more then some wanna spend..but i wanted something a lil bigger.. and diff.. i am learning so much bout this stuff now that i have to buy it all..lol.. but its gonna be awesome when its done.. =)..then next is to build the motor itself.

I'm also doing a custom setup after buying a kit off ebay and concluded that the kit was crap, so i've been upgrading it before my install. Although I still don't know all the sizes for certain fittings and hoses, I think you should still do a custom turbo kit. If I had the chance, I'd go back in time and not buy the kit at all. Granted a star or hrc kit wouldn't be as bad as mine but if you upgrade your kit, you'd be spending more money on replacing parts. So with a custom kit, you could build your kit the way you want to build it. You decide what BOV, what turbo, fuel system, etc. If you take the time to read stuff, it really isnt that hard at all.

What I have gathered and need to be gathered...
Piping (non intercooled system for right now)
Downpipe
O2 bung
T3 watercooled turbo
Turbonetics deltagate
vortech fuel pressure riser
walbro 255 lph intank pump
hks SSQV BOV
hosetechniques.com silicone hose kit
autometer carbon fiber gauges (a/f, boost, egt)
pillar pod
flanges (turbo flange, cat flange, wastegate flange, bov flange)
hoses (fuel, water)
Brass fittings (fuel, water)
I have everything but flanges, hoses, and fittings. I plan to install it mid february in sections at a time. First gauges, then fuel system, then the rest.

What you need to get started is...
Turbo manifold
turbo
wastegate (if no internal wastegate)
fuel system of some sort I would get a fuel pump AND vortech, dont settle for anything less then vortech
Gauges (boost, a/f, egt)
assorted piping, cut them and clamp them hose couplings
for the downpipe, I think you could route the exhaust from your turbo into your existing downpipe where it connects to the headers, that would save you the hassle of finding/making your own downpipe, you wouldn't have to worry about the O2 sensor
All the flanges, hoses, fittings, and clamps you need (can be found at most hardware stores, flanges online or at exhaust shops)
I wouldn't run more then 5 pounds on this setup though, but I think that's the bare minimum to get you going

Optional
bov you dont need one to get going (not at really low boost), but it is highly recommended that you get one
intercooler
built bottom end
etc.

Yep, I forgot to mention this. If you're gonna build your own - get a copy of "Maximum Boost" by Corky Bell. It is a book about designing, testing, and installing turbo systems. There is alot of valuable information in that book. I don't think I would have been completely comfortable building a custom system without having read it.

if people are looking for Manifolds hit my site we build em all,
oil line kits on there and soon a fuel kit

Or you can just have a stage 4 turbo gooroo live on the other side of town that can answer all the questions that come up during the process! Seriosuly though, there are quite a few helpful people on this board that will take the time to explain something if you don't understand. I would have been lost without the help I have received.
