37808, Anyone turboed a 2.4 yet?
Posted by brynden29, Jan-23-03 03:04 AM
I know that there are several guys that have done the 2.4 swap. But I think they are keeping it NA. I was wondering if any 2G has turboed the 2.4 yet? If so, how did it go? Any problems?

Just curious, not like I would ever do it or anything. ;)

A friend of mine is in the process of building a MONSTER 2.4 turbo. It's a 4g63 though. He's going with the L3R turbo and just about anything else you can imagine!! The engine is coming out next weekend to start on all the engine work and upgraded internals. Probably won't be done for another month or two. I'll post some pics when he's finished.

I believe Skrilla had turbo'd his awhile back.....try emailing him or something. He is the only one I have ever heard of doing it.....good luck with the turbo'd 2.6L stroker }( that would indeed be some intense shit!

He's ^^^ right. Skrilla has done it a while back.

Mean motor I'll tell ya. Skrilla's around I'm sure he will find this thread.

My buddy terry (onebaddsm98) is building a 2.4 with PT turbo pistons and rods, the stock head and a NER stage one. The motor is together except for the damn timing belt that we have had some trouble with. Soon it will be ready to go back in the car. Its cold as hell down here (-25) today so the car wont be out on the road till at least the end of april.

if one was to turbo a 2.4, wouldn't that allow to use a larger turbo without worrying about spool up - a turbo's spool is largely dependent on the amount of raw displacement it sees, right? i wonder where a t03/t04 or a 20g would spool up with a 2.4 or a 2.4 stroker (2.6).

It's not entirely based upon displacement, a turbo is more of a load sensitive device. You want the turbo to be pushing more CFM then the motor, as this is what translates into boost. Otherwise, you are simply increasing the VE of the motor without actually getting into boost. If the motor is passing more air then the turbo, then the turbo will become a restriction. This is what happens when too small of a turbo is used on a motor. If I were to strap a single T25 to a Viper, it is a safe bet that the T25 would be unable to flow more then the Viper motor in NA trim. Therefore, the system would never get into boost. Also, this is what happens with a 4G63 with a T25, as it can spike up to 20+ psi, but drops to 16 by redline, the motor is simply using the air nearly as quickly as the motor is taking it in. Less of a force feed, and makes the engine shoot it's load a bit too early. A properly sized turbo can provide for an extremely wide power band, while an undersized turbo can be a high RPM obstruction, and an oversized turbo can become a burden at low RPMs.

Yes, a larger displacement will allow for a quicker spool time for the turbo. The L3R turbo my friend will be using is HUGE, so he definitely needs the stroker motor to spool it. Here's a few stats on this turbo he's using:

This turbo is the size of a T61 but spools more like a t3/t4. Test cars have been getting full boost at 4300RPM. This turbo will support 35psi to 9000RPM. We also have to mention the GT35R is the most efficient wheel we've ever seen or heard of. It's reaches 80% efficient and is 78% or better for most of the map. And it's the most efficient wheel at high boost levels, 78% over 30psi.

*-supports 630bhp
*-62lb/min compressor (sometimes rated 65lb/min)
*-largest 10 bladed GT30 turbine wheel
*-T04E (3" inlet / 2" outlet) or T04S compressor housing (4" inlet / 2.5" outlet)
*-ported 8cm turbine housing

I was looking into it - cause I want to end up with a 2.6L turbo at some point. It looks like a 20g would work well. A 16g would work, but only with the stock head/cams. However it doesn't look like the 16g would work too well(even on a stock bore 2.4L) once you start modifying the head/cams for higher volumetric efficiency. I haven't researched the Garret turbos with the 2.4L.

I am thinking of mirroring Skrilla's old turbo setup, using a ball bearing T4, Pauter rods, and either ROSS and Arias pistons. he put down about 400 to the wheels untuned. :D I would tune it and see what I could make it do, though. ;)

<<just spoke yesterday with ross pistons about getitng some made up for the 2gnt boyz....

i need to speak with arias =P
37899, Ross has them...

...they just may not know it. Stan2GNT sent them one of his pistons and they made some for him in stock bore size. He had the glaze removed from his block and just dropped them in without an overbore. I like Ross and Arias better than JE though.

Edit: Bill you have a good memory :)

...like a year ago, when Evulflea found me on Supra forums. The whole turbo thing is great and all and made big power but I'm a big fan of NA. I reached my stupid all motor HP goal but there are still things that haven't been tried yet like some real cams (I have BS crower regrinds) and something better than my TB and intake manifold. I'm hoping to make stage 2 turbo power NA (that would make anyone drool)

The block had a decent overbore just under 2.6L, but anymore and I was afraid the block couldn't boost which I would, again, look for it to do. It was a T4 BB and full spool would be anywhere between 2800rpms to 3500 rpms depending on the temperature. Working a graveyard shift would get me there at 2.8K on the T4. Untuned at 18psi got over 350WHP and on race gas I'm guessing something more but I didn't go as lean as I should have. I eventually went from -15* to 10 and cut down the fuel some to almost 400 daily but I never made it perfect (still too rich). I only got a chance to run 4 or so high end sports cars. But when you tell someone you have a $17K car that can possibly run low 12's on street tires they tend to be skeptical. How 'bout when you show your hood talking about 2.5Ls with your swap and your original valve cover has a freakin 2.0 in raised lettering stamped on it. Anyway all but 1 of the REAL sports cars were stock. I say real because at this point a bolted Celica GTS, GSR, S2000 and even new 4.6L mustang don't qualify and my area doesn't seem to have these cars with extreme mods. There is an LS1 with a 200shot though that might have really put me under. Toward the end it was a blue Supra in Mission Viejo which handed me my ass. A Modena lost on a freeway battle. A late Z06 and Boxster (200HP engine) lost and several others that aren't worth mentioning. With less timing and compression (I have 9.6 JE's) I bet 22lbs is possible on 91octane. The CR wasn't stock just the piston's dynamic, but it was 9:1. A nice 8.6 (like Bob S.) Sounds pretty good though with -15*

if me and josiah could finally find some time... i will be boosting the 2.4... parts are waiting... just need the time. those 550s are hungry man... heal up!! :)

Josiah, do you have any pictures of your setup???

I'd like to see pictures of a 2.4l setup, since I haven't yet.

bob s. is building my 2.4, goin with 8:6:1. also, i decided to keep the 16g and send it in to brad over at hrc to get it converted to a 20g. im estimating spool up time aroun 3k or so, and around 350 street hp.
