3761, ATTEN Wyatt and anyone that can help, Star Stage 1 kit Posted by DSMNT96, Apr-14-01 05:26 PM
In a couple of weeks I will be getting my Star Stage 1 kit (Wyatt, my check will be sent to you very soon) and I was wondering if the kit will come with directions on where to weld the dumppipe to the downpipe. I noticed on Wyatt's site that it shows where the dump pipe is welded on the downpipe, but how did he know where to weld it. I know it sounds like a stupid question but I really want to be able to hear my turbo spool and plus I'm doing the install myself. I need to be able to tell my welder where exactly to weld the dumppipe on the downpipe. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Angel

If you want your car to be really loud don't weld it back into the exhaust. The waste gate dumping to atmosphere is the best sound a car can make, but if you want a quite, emissions friendly car just have it welded back into the exhaust a couple inches from the turbo. There no set place just try to get it close to the top while still keeping a smooth bend in the pipe. Before you weld it you really should try it out the way it comes to make sure you really want to quite it down.

You will still hear the turbo spool but when you reach your full boost the waste gate will open and that is when the exhaust from the waste gate will dump to atmosphere. So once you hit full boost (really when your close to it) the waste gate will open and you will be in heaven and everyone around you will be scared sh*tless :)

FMAX turbo systems also claim leaving the dump tube open to the atmospere saved a bunch of hp compared to welding it in (not sure how much but double figures. its on their website).

If you do decide to weld the dumpipe into the downpipe, I recommend you follow the advice of Corky Bell and make sure you are atleast 18" from the turbine outlet... Basically a couple of inches before the O2 fitting. One reason plumbing it back into the exhuast could hurt performance is IMO, it disrupts the exhuast velocity, causing an increase in back pressure, but I could be wrong...

If you do decide to dump the waste gate you should have a pipe made to have it exit behind the front wheel. This way all that hot air will be put out the side of the car instead of into the engine bay. If you really want to hear what it will sound like I think you should download some movies with turbo cars. Your bound to find some with the waste gate vented to atmosphere.
try this http://www.notabusinessracing.org/ go to video's then the K2 directory and download the biggest file. It is long but it's by far my favorite movie I've got off the net. You'll get an idea of how loud it could be (but I doubt it will be this loud). Have fun :)

I was told by Wyatt, that when you do decide to weld the dump tube into the down pipe, you have to have the down pipe and the wastegate installed. Then you will have who ever is going to weld it, take the dump tube and cut it to size and proceed to cut and weld.
It's not as loud as you think, but it is pretty loud. I'm trying to get this done as we speak. A friend of mine is going to do it for free:-) That's why I have to wait.
