37430, Questions about turboing.. Posted by Hektik_98TalonESi, Jan-15-03 08:58 AM
Heya, I currently have a 98 Talon ESi. I'm really interested in turboing the car, but I don't have the complete knowledge to do so. I'm financially stable enough to buy all the necessary components, it would be about summer when I would purchase it. Does anyone know any informational sites and I could read up on and try and learn about the fuel systems and all the confusing things :/ I have a while to learn this crap, so anything helps :) Thanks

Im also thinking of going turbo. Ive searched most of the old posts but Im still wondering what is the most common problems that come along with turbos. And what types of extra maintainance is neccessary? Thank you in advance.

the most common problems seem to be improper tuning combined with stock pistons, AKA detonation and broken ring landings. If you get forged pistons from the start, this greatly increases reliability. You need to have an adequate fuel system, first and foremost.
As for maintenance, pretty much the same, you just need to be on it more often. get in a habit of always checking out the engine, good interval on your oil change, etc...

i am also kinda in the same boat as u my friend. ive been planning on turboing since summer, been reading and saving up. pretty much u gotta keep ur eye on ur a/f guage make sure ur not running lean or overly rich and ur egt guage making sure u stay under 1600 f. those are pretty much keys to not detonating. also im having someone install my kit, take it to someone who knows about turbo's and how they work, also would help if they do a lot of work on imports. then perhaps a dyno afterward. also keep ur eye on the boost guage, thats an obvious. i will not be boosting over 8 psi. as stage 2 comes preset to 8 psi and i dont plan on running any more boost on stock internals. so no boost controller for me. other than that search my friend and read and learn.:thumbsup

does anyone think that 120,000 miles is too many for a turbo. What if I built the bottom end first? Also what about a stage 1 and a starion intercooler? Thanks for all the help.

120,000 isn't really relivant its how good of compression u have in the motor (IE how well taken care of it was)
if u build the motor (forged internals) and keep the tuning taken care of via 8injecotor setup or something proven, and u reasearch it and watch your levels egt, oil pressur, fuel temps u will be fine 15psi daily 18psi daily on forged pistons NO PROBLEM!
if people are looking for custom turbo stuff hit the website im hoping to have some SFMU's up soon for sale and a return line kit...
