37201, Been reading about turbos, trying to build a custom kit, have some questions
Posted by a_miller_76, Jan-10-03 02:00 AM

Okay, here's what I want to do. I neither have the time or money to rebuild my bottom end or deal with a lot of shit. So this is my plan...

14b Turbo, internal wastegate....running 5psi
Side Mount Intercooler
Stock fuel system
Vortech FMU

Okay, here are the questions:

I've been told this will be a very safe and reliable set-up...is this true?

Will the stock fuel system handle this with an FMU or do I really need a new pump and injectors?

How do I set the wastegate actuator to 5psi? Do I have to just adjust it while monitoring a boost gauge or do I buy a preset one?

Blow off valves...how do I set this? I've never seen one with notches to indicate PSI levels so is this another guess and adjust situation?

Apexi SAFC....do I really need one or is it an option?

And finally...EGT's. I've read a few threads suggesting that 1600 is a danger level, and others saying 1300. What is the bottom line on that and what are the best ways of keeping them down?

I'm sure I'll have more questions, but those are bugging me.

EDIT: Oh, and will I need a Fuel Cut Defencer?

Alright n00b I will try to help you out here...

No time or money? Hmm... you may not want to do this.

Sounds good so far

>Okay, here are the questions:

Here it starts.... :rolleyes

Depends on the tuning.

>Will the stock fuel system handle this with an FMU or do I

You will need a bigger pump, stock injectors *should* be fine up to 8 psi. I say should because there are guys running 8 psi on stockers and are good. I could not. Each car is different. But for 5 psi, you should be fine.

>How do I set the wastegate actuator to 5psi? Do I have to

The internals (I believe) have an adjustment screw. You will have adjust it, check the level with your boost guage, and adjust more. I would open the gate all the way so you get hardly any boost and go from there. There would be nothing worse than boosting the first time, spiking to 15 psi and blowing your engine. So be careful.

>Blow off valves...how do I set this? I've never seen one

You do not adjust a BOV. It sits on the IC piping and when it detects a drop in pressure from the manifold, it opens and releases all the pressure in the pipes. You can adjust the sound it makes on some, but there is nothing else to do.

>Apexi SAFC....do I really need one or is it an option?

For 5 psi, you probably will not need it, but it is always a good thing to have.

>And finally...EGT's. I've read a few threads suggesting

Again, it is all in the tuning. 1600 degrees is the limit. After that stuff can start to melt. The 1300 you have seen is Celcius. It is the same as 1600 Ferenheit (sp?) But the right amount of fuel will keep the EGT's down. At 5 psi, you will not have much to worry about.

>I'm sure I'll have more questions, but those are bugging me.

I am sure you will too.

>EDIT: Oh, and will I need a Fuel Cut Defencer?

It can't hurt. I had one that came with my star kit, but I took it off. I would get the missing link. That seems to be the best thing out now. Good luck!!!

Ditto...

You will want to buy a Walbro 255lph Hi-pressure pump. They are only $100-120. You can get by with stock injectors, Walbro pump, and FMU at only 5 psi boost. You should get a missing link valve from Synapse http://www.synapseengineering.com/. I believe that people have better luck with it than using a FCD or VC1/2. If you have the EGT probe mounted in the #4 runner, than 1600F is a reasonable limit. That equates to 871C (C = (F - 32) / 1.8). If someone said 1300F, then they were probably referring to an EGT probe mounted in the downpipe (I don't suggest you do this).

And be careful...

Ahhh...that's what missing link means :)

Thanks guys, this is helping out a lot.

One of the main things I want to do is make sure I'm gonna be able to safely run this set-up before I begin. And the other thing is I know how bad my life would get if I blew my engine. So yes, I will be super careful and not get too crazy with the boost.

That's what we all say!!!! }>

Here is a recent thread that should answer any questions about lowering the minimum boost for that internal wastegate actuator. http://forums.2gnt.com/dcforum/DCForumID16/5666.html
