3681, Tapping the exhaust Manifold for EGT probe..Good Idea? Posted by RS_Guy, Apr-12-01 01:40 PM
I am very worried about tapping the exhaust manifold, because of risk of it cracking/warping around the hole... Is there an "optimum" spot for tapping???
How about an "optimum" point from a temperature gathering point of view? Anyone have any advice on WHERE I should tap my exhaust manifold for an EGT probe? i.e. on "runner" 1, or 2? Or should I just put it in the middle before it enters the turbo?
I have the HRC Echaust manifold btw...
Thanks

Joe is having HRC do it for him but I was worried as you are so I tapped the Down pipe. I read corrrect temps it just needs to be uped a little because of the location. Lets say the reading on my EGT is 1200 I take that and veiw it as 1350-1400 becasue by time it reaches the Dpipe where the sensor is it cools slightly do to the turbo. No biggie, but if you could get HRC to do it that would be the best way. And at that route you want #4 runner. Good luck SEE YA!!!!!!!!!!!!!I AM BOOSTING AGAIN

Sounds good, but I'm hoping HRC can tell me where to tap it... My friend has all the professional Taps, and the manifold is off the car right now anyway....
BTW My probe currently sits on the downpipe below the turbo, and I guess that 1350-1400 is the safest it *should* read, but that is scary and I am afraid that 200 is not a safe enough number...or maybe its even too safe... Ultimately I want to know that 1600-1650 is just closes to the safe limit, it feels better than just guessing around, as after all temperatures measured after turbos vary due to lots of things...
