i happen to be in the market for a new datalogger and they are conviently having a group buy on dsmtalk for 2g dataloggers from obdII.com...i have heard this datalogger is a p.i.t.a though...is that right...i pretty much want something that will tell me throttle position, timing advance, rpm, mph, air temp, knock and trouble codes..is there such a tool that everyone likes and agrees works..i was reading about the obdII one and they pretty much say that it logs slowly and it will disconnect all the time...i have to find out whats going on w/ my ecu to get these high egts to settle down..what do you guys personally use..i have a decent laptop that i'm going to be using..i currently use it for my dis2 programmable, my 8 inj setup and then this...thanks...tunerstein? obdII? other brands......

I have the PocketLOGGER and havent had any problems with it. Plus i get 16 samples a second.

well you can get the one i have personally used at www.obd-2.com Its like 122 bucks for the cable and software. Its really cool and pretty easy to use IMO. I dont have a laptop though, i used a friend's. I really tring to decide which to get though. Either the laptop version, or the pocketlogger. I'd like to hear some more peeps with the pocketlogger...

POCKETLOGGER RULES!!!!!

Much easier to log and review, smaller than a laptop, better sample rate, all the 4g guys have them (around here anyway) so there's plenty of help interpreting logs. Some people are reporting problems the Pocketlogger on ATX equipped cars though.

EDIT: ok did some digging on the pocketlogger website, and it says that it will only work with a PDA with a serial connection?? well shit, most are USB now...anyone know of any models to look at?

^^if ur just looking for a good pda to use with the pocketlogger, the palm m100 is really cheap. u can get it for like $50 on ebay, and it works with the pocketlogger software just as good as any of the other palms out there.

ok cool. did some more searching, and you can get a USB to Serial adapter cable for the Palms. Would this work, or has anyone tried it? Sounds like lots of peeps have had probs with these cables..

i would just get the m100 with the serial cable. its guarenteed to work. they said on the site that there were some probs with the usb so i wouldnt get that. the m100 comes with 2mb of space but for a little more you can get a m105 that comes with 8mb.

The cable you (can) get from pocketlogger works just fine. I have a Sony Clie (16MB) with the cable from pocketlogger, and I have no problems connecting or staying connected for that matter. Teh PDA doesn't need to have the serial connection, it's the cable that has the ISO connector on it that has the serial connector on the other end. Did that make sense?

It goes like this:

OBD II port - ISO connector to serial port connector - serial port connector to pda port.

ok...thats awsome info..one problem is that i already have a perfectly good laptop to use..i guess i could go get a new palm ...is there anyone using a different software app for laptops, i checked on the pocketloggger website and it said that they don't work w/ laptops..would be nice if they could..or if there was a way to load the palm os onto a laptop and use that...that would be way to easy though..i am trying to keep the clutter in my car down to a minimum so the more stuff i add the less room i have..would be cool to have all three programs on my laptop running simultaneously, dis 2, datalogger and eic...then make a screen saver that says DANGER TO MANIFOLD!!!...lol....any other suggestions or people running the obdII that can make me feel a little better about its capabilities

Ok, yeah i get that i guess, but i was looking at some new models that say they have a USB connection on the PDA?? I'm assumimng the Sony you have has a different type of connector on it (ISO)?? Hehe, oh well, already bought me a Palm m100 last night...now i just have to get the pocketlogger cable and software..

Please help me here. My damn pockerlogger has like never really worked perfect or hooked up fast. I have to go back and forth like 20 times before it conects finally. once it connects it does work well. What can I do to make it connect faster???? it takes forever sometimes!! :'(

i just got the modded version of pocketlogger for atx 2gnts, and its awesome, worth you spending the $50 on a palm on ebay.
greg, just play around with the byte timing, alot. i know mine was really picky about staying connected, but played with timing and its working great now, quick and reliable connections.

Where can I get the modded version for OBD2 ATX?

dougie, just go to the helpdesk thing on the pocketlogger website, and post up asking for the modded version. i was told he just did a quick hack for it to work, and had to get it from someone else.

I have found one other laptop datalogger besides OBD-II, below are all three. The first two have both Palm and Windows versions and you get both for about 50 bucks less than the pocketlogger:

Do I need a special cable or can I get one from any of the other sites that sell loggers?

Before I waste the $$, I have heard mixed answers. Will this work on my 1995 obd1 since many state it is obd2 compliant? Any drawbacks of using/lack of features???

Ok, this is way back from the dead, but you guys should be proud because I was searching right? I have a laptop I plan on using to control my EIC034 with and eventually an MSD unit. I was originally planning on ordering the www.obd-2.com cable and software and using that. I would like some input about it from users, or other programs that work well with laptops. I downloaded the RoadRace program, but I don't have a cable. Does anyone know where I can get an OBD2 cable that will plug into a USB port on my laptop? Any input about datalogging for a laptop would be greatly appreciated.

All you have to do is get the cable that runs from the obdII port to serial and there are tons of different programs all over the net that you can use for logging. Try some demos and use the one you like the best.

you used to be able to get the cables from ebay for like $50.

I think the problem is that most laptops now do not come with a serial port, they have USB ports.
