36691, Egt's so high...so high

sup guys..i come for advice..i have a star stage 2??? kinda past that but o well..i have the 8 inj setup and after some tuning tonight i have no lean spots and its good and rich...i'm running 310cc fms 30's as my secondaries (walbro 255 high flow, aeormotive 1:1 fpr)...i have a autometer egt guage and probe(i know its a cheap probe) and the probe is located between cyls 1 and 2 right before the turbo, between the T and A of the star...i'm seeing really high egts when i go into long pulls ...if i go into 4th from 75 mph it hits 1600 in no time at all...in 5th (this is at 10 psi btw, but it will do the samething at 6 psi too just not as quick) it creaps above 1500 and won't hit 1600 till about 110 mph...i never get above 5grand on the tach either b/c the damn guage gets up and i don't want to melt anything...got to much money in this car for that...my question is do you guys think i'm getting 4 cyl's worth of heat on that probe and its just a bad place to put the thing..i have a pretty comparable setup to jcurcillo but have a little better intercooler(hes starion frontmount and i'm star frontmount) and i've got a 50trim t3/t4 and hes running a t3..hes got his probe in cyl 1 closest to the ecu and fuse box and hes getting 1400-1500 readings in good pulls at 12 psi...whats my deal ...i don't under stand why my egts are getting up ..i have the missing link too...sorry...je 8:8:1 pistons bored .20 over w/ eagle rods...pretty good amount of porting and polishing...could use some guidance..thanks...

hmmmm... if you're crazy rich, you could be getting "afterburn" or something crazy that raises EGT's even know you're not running lean. have you datalogged? do you have a digital a/f gauge? if you find that they're insanely rich then you can lean out it a little by either tweaking your FPR a little or using an AFC or whatnot. if you have corbin's crazy 8 injector setup, the really nice walbro pump, AND a FMIC with only 10 psi on a fully built engine, it's pretty strange that your EGT's get that high that fast. anyways, i'm done now.

EDIT: then again, it could be the not-so-great-but-not-that-bad autometer probe. i've seen other ones around for like $50 that are compadable with the autometer gauge, but i can't remember the link of where to get a nicer one.

see thats what i'm baffled by too...after burn is a thought...detonation b/c of timing advance would do the same thing..i need to datalog really bad...any other thoughts

Did you do initial tuning with a datalogger? I'd figure that that would get you close enough to eliminate afterburn issues. I think it would take alot of fuel to get afterburn. Anything less would just make you slow with low EGT's. Maybe you could try richening up some more in the matrix area. Change all of the numbers above 4-6 psi (whatever that is in kPa). I'd increase them by about 5% and see if anything happens. And are you doing these runs at WOT. If you were doing this at less than WOT, I might suspect you were in closed loop and getting alot of advance (causing high EGTs).

If it makes you feel better, I hit 1700F a few times (if the numbers went that high) this weekend. I lowered my idle pressure to get my fuel right at 0 psi and ended up messing up my fuel at 6 psi. Now I need to mess with the values in the matrix to get things right.

to answer your question i haven't datalogged it yet..that is the next thing i'm purchasing..and very soon at that...i'm also getting a team rip egt probe so i'll be getting a little more accurate readings...my injector scaler is at 6.8 something, we have it set to kick on a little after 1 psi..my aeromotive fpr is set to 40 at idle....btw my a/f guage goes to the richest bar starting at 0-1 psi and stays there all the way to 10-11 psi at wot...if i remember right w/ a 1:1 fpr and a walbro 255 shouldn't our stock fuel system be good to at least 5 psi..when i had my injector scaler at 5.7 at 6 psi when we went wot and turned up the boost the car didn't go lean until about 7-8 psi..thats when we turned it up...i am beginning to think its a timing issue..but what makes me worry is that i was getting these high egts at 6-7 psi too..i wish i had a fuel pressure gauge inside my car so i could see what it was doing..i guess i will need some dyno time to really see what it stays at..i am just wondering if these high egts are b/c of detonation caused by timing advance..or maybe my knock sensor is going nuts or isn't working at all so the car is just advancing the hell out of timing as a safeguard...who knows....corbin why don't you pm your phone number so we can discuss this fuel setup and how adjusting the matrix works exactly...i haven't touched that but what i'm hoping i can do is dyno the car, find out where rich and lean spots are and adjust that matrix accordingly to flatten out my fuel curve to be pretty much perfect..this timing issue is about to get dealt w/ as well b/c my msd dis2 is going to get repaired and installed really soon...any other ideas on this?? i am guessing that a datalogger is pretty much a must to figure it out

Chad, just try to be careful right now. Try not to boost too much until you figure out the problem. In your original post, you said that on a long pull boosting 5-6 psi, the egt does reach 1600 degrees, but it doesn't get there as quick, which I think is normal; but, when you do pulls around 10-12 psi, the egt shoots to 1600 degrees.

I don't have any first hand knowledge of the 8-injector setup and its settings, and without any datalogging numbers to see, I'm guessing that you either have too much fuel or not enough fuel around 10 psi, and/or the ecu is advancing a lot of timing (I see 38 degrees advance with my car) around 10 psi. I, personally, believe that you might need to add a little more fuel towards the top end.

Just for kicks, you might want to add more fuel towards the higher manifold pressure fuel maps, and also try leaning those same fuel maps just to see if there is any difference in your air/fuel and egt temp. Lastly, I think your egt probe placement is fine.

Let us know if find out anything bro ;)

Any news on a resolution? I am setting up the 8 injector setup right now, and I am watching these threads very carefully.
