36636, 14b wastegate actuator

Hey guys. Well, I've decided to go the custom route with the turbo. I'm going to be using a 14b from a 1g. My question is - What pressure is the wastegate actuator set to? I guess I really want to know - how can I set it as low as possible? Would it crack earlier if I fed it a line from before the intercooler? Is that a bad idea? I heard they're set to 10, and thats just too high. I'd like it to be set to 5 or 6 so I could work my way up with a hallman or joe-p MBC. Would it be possible to use an actuator to use an HRC Stage I actuator for the 16g? I'd rather not spend for an external wastegate and I don't want to blow up on my first boosted run. TIA.

Jim,
I'm not a turbo guru, but if you have dicided to jump into the turbo arena, why wouldn't you just get a manual boost controller from the start. I'm guessing that you are trying to keep the funds to a minimum, but you will end up with one anyway right? are they that expensive? for the insurance of not blowing it on the first run, I would just bite the bullet and get one. IMHO

WIKKI

p.s. by the way. what exhaust manifold are you choosing? I'm really interested.

Well, I will get a MBC. The problem is that you can't set the boost any lower than what the wastegate actuator is set to. If it's set to 8 then the lowest I can boost is 8. You can only raise the boost with a boost controller. So thats basically why I need to know what the actuator is set to - because that is what dictates the minimum boost.

I bought the manifold(as well as the turbo and IC) from Paul(510eclipse). It's a tubular style. Here check it out.

Anyway, can someone please help me with this wastegate. I suppose I could figure out the cracking pressure with a tire pump and a pressure gauge or something like that. I'd still like to have some opinions on wheather or not hooking it up between the compressor and IC would be a good way of making it crack as low as possible.

It is about a 7-9 lb spring. I ended up with an internal WG from a 16G that will require some modification to fit onto the 14B but at least it is set at 5 pounds.

You know what? I think that is my old manifold hehe. I sold it on ebay a long ass time ago to DVSJay and then a few months later he signed up for 2gnt. Small world.

Wheatking posted a link a while back. It is just using a spring like a 3lb that is going the other way against the 9 lb spring therefore making it around a 6 pound. I don't know just find the link and see what I mean.

Thanks guys.

I haven't been able to find the post about the springs, but I think I'll use the Gus actuator rod mod. Damn that guy Gus had some fast cars. I never knew him, but it's a shame he passed.

Hey Jeff - so is it a good manifold? Did you like it? Did you have problems with it? There are an awfull lot of weld patches on it. It's not an equal length runner setup, but it looks really cool. As long as it holds together I'll be happy.

Bill, thanks alot for that Gus writup link. There's some serious shit on that site.

I can't wait to get some boost on motor. I just bought a 1g auto fuel rail w/stock 47.3psi 1:1 riser & 390cc injectors for $30! I'm trying to hook up with Thura's EIC. Hope to be goin with 8 injectors on this setup.

Was it that wastegate actuator you are looking for ?

Sorry Jim I didn't see this earlyier. I have the mod your thinking of done to my car. What the guy on that web site does not tell you is that as you leagnthen the arm you actually leaving the little flapper door partialy open. Which makes you get boost much slower than if it were totally closed in the first place. If I set my T25 to 10lbs (shorter arm setting) it boosts to that at about 2000 rpm. But When set at 5lbs (longer arm setting) it boost there at about 3000 rpm. Does that make sense?

The mod that alain posted is a much better way to go cause your flapper door will alway be closed. I don't have any idea what the acutator arm looks like on the 14b, but as you can see in the pic below it is nearly impossible for me to do that mod with the T25.

Here is a pretty good pic of what it should look like.

Hey Jim, I have a 5 psi wastegate actuator sitting in my garage from when I was stage 1.
It came with my HAHN kit, I now have the 9psi actuator.
Email me if you want it...

You guys are the best. That adjustable spring is definately the way to go.

Thanks for the offer Mark - I'll keep it in mind. I'm going to at least try to modify mine first.
