36545, 160 degree thermostat on our turbo cars
Posted by DeanoD, Dec-28-02 07:51 AM
Who is actually using the neon 160 degree thermostat on their turbo 420A car?

Any problems with fuel trims(running richer than it was it had a stock 195 degree thermostat)?

The price is cheap and I thought this might help reduce detonation. My water temp stays between 201-207 during hard multiple 10psi pulls in 70degree weather.

I read all the normally aspirated guys posts about having temps of approx. 170-180 degrees. My stft/ltft pull all the idle fuel when the water temp gets to 125 degrees, so if I had water temp of 170 degrees it should be fine.

Any thoughts?

I have the howell neon 160degree thermo and it's great. The car does run a bit richer than usual (which can be good) but i adjust that with my safc.

My temps run anywhere from 196-207 which the high temp is usually when i'm beating the crap out of my car.

I'm turbo'ed also...hrc stage 3.

I also run that stat with success. I didn't notice any difference in fuel trims after I installed mine, and after hard WOT pulls, the coolent temp stays around 205. When cruising at around 50-60 mph the coolent temp stays around 175-180. I would imagine that with a fluidyne radiator, you would see lower. mmore consistant temps.

I use it. I don't know what it does wiht my fuel trims. I don't use them. my water temp does get "pretty dang low" on the expressway at night 'though (needle starts falling down again). my oil temp is usu. at about 100 to 110 at those times (if I am driving hard).

I have it I run it and I have no idea what it did to my fuel trims. It keeps me nice and cool on the temp guage though.

I would bet that Howell will not have what you want.

I am going to order mine from http://www.howellautomotive.com

I am not sure if it comes with gaskets.....it should though.

Just order it from Howell. it's only $12, and you're supporting a 2GNT vendor.

I have one and love it. No idea how low my water temps go, but the needle will fall down to around the 1/4 point when i've been cruising on the freeway for several minutes.

i don't have a thermostat. IMO during the summer you can take it out without any problems. i haven't had any issues. however, it would definately take forever for the car to heat up without a thermostat in the winter time...

Not having a thermostat in is not a very good idea. The car needs to be at operating temperature to run properly which is above 150 I believe on our cars. Also, when you are making hard pulls, your temp needs to be around 170 at the minimum or you can have problems with warping the head. What happens when you don't have a thermostat is that the coolant from the radiator gets recirculated all of the time instead of just when the thermostat is open. This way, when just cruising, you can see coolant temps around 120 deg or so. Well, when you go from cruising to a good WOT pull, those temps will go from 120 to 200 degrees in a fairly short order. That rapid change in temperature, causes the head to expand rapidly and unevenly causing the head to warp slightly. When this happens, your headgasket is much more vulnerable to damage as well.

so this is a good cheap alternative to getting a bigger radiator?

I just ordered mine now from Howell automotive, a friend told me to get one and it seems it is very helpful coming from the turbo 2gnt'ers here, thanks for the good information about the temps.

I ordered mine yesterday and got it today. Only thing about it was it came with a rubber gasket on the outside that I had to take off. Got it for 21.00 shipped to my door via UPS. Took all of 15 minutes to put in.
I didnt take my car out for a run yet because my inspection is up. Tommorow I'm going to take it out and get it inspected and see how it goes. I was overheating BAD on long hijgway trips. Hopefully this will help.

so you removed the rubber gasket on it and used a stock (new) gasket for our cars?
so is this the one you got?

Yup. That's the one. I took off that rubber peace you see around it. The stock one didnt have that. The gasket that connected the housing was still good so I reused it. I'll take her out for a romp tommorow and make sure there's no leaks. Didnt have any when I warmed it up though so I'm assuming it's good to go.

I also use the 160 degree stat. I guess it helps a little. After hard pulls, I used to see about 210 deg. Fah., now I see about a 205-206 degrees. However, I did notice that it takes my car longer to reach normal operating temp. Maybe my EGR system mod also contributes to the longer warm up temp.
