I was wondering how long you guys let your car cool down for? I have been letting it cool down for about a minute thirty. Good or bad?

I usually let mine idle for the amount of time it takes me to get out of the car, light and smoke a cigarette. I guess that comes out to about 2-3 minutes. I'm my own turbo timer.

It depends on how you drive your car. If you just got done with the 1/4, then you should let it cool down for at least 3min. But it helps when you cost when doing this to help it cool down. This way the air is going through your intercooler and your radiator.

But if your just driving from A to B without driving hard, then 30sec should be fine.

All your doing is cooling down your turbo. Your letting the oil go through the turbo, taking the heat away from the turbo. You don't wanna let your car sit there for like 6 min!!! I've seen 4G63 guy's do this, it's funny:-) Because I was told, if you think about it, that's when old cars overheat. When you let your car run for like 6 min after driving it, you just keeping it hot.

No man, I'm with you. I think turbo cool down time is dependent on how hard you drove your car.

I know this isn't an absolute guage on telling how long you need to cool down, but I use it a lot. The EGT guage. Watch that and it should give you a pretty good indicator on how long you need to wait. I usually always wait till it's under 950 (F) or so degrees. I'll wait till under 900 sometimes when I really run her hard. the timing is always pretty much online with what we're talking about right here as well. Anywhere from 30 seconds to a few minutes.

I know my system isn't perfect, but it's a pretty damn good at correlating how hard I've run my turbo. When I've run it a long time, it stays hot longer and takes much longer to cool. When I hardly do any boosting, it cools down really quick. Take a look at it sometime. I think you guys would agree.

I agree too, dependent on driving but I dont think the heat hurts the turbo as much as the oil. I believe the heat hurts the then stationary oil causing it to dry up and clog the oil passages. Reason enough to use synthetic oil.

Thanx for the replies guys...i have a turbo timer but its not working right,but it worked when i was n/a (go figure):) yea i noticed as well on my egt guage after driving hard and normal how the temps vary on how long they take to cool down.

Use synth oil and you won't have to worry about the oil baking in the turbo!

Boost Cautiously...

I have an oil temp gauge too in my car, and it takes about 1.5minutes-3minutes to cool the oil down back to what I would consider *safer*. Unfortunately I can't give you any specific numbers, beacuse its been 6months since I drove my car hard enough to need to cool it down....

well, PLEASE get back to us on that RS_Guy, cause I don't have a Turbo timer yet, and when I do get my HKS Type 1, ( it auto. sets the time depending on driving ) I want to know if it's right:-)

...and I also agree wit stan about the oil heating. The turbo is made to take the heat, but hot oil breaks down quicker. That is almost reason enough to seperate turbo oil supply with a cooler and the engine oil supply. I do not know how that would be done though
