35926, Complete Custom Turbo kit..
Posted by lazerus, Dec-13-02 02:13 PM
Hey guys.. i've been kind of following this forum for a little while,
i just finished with my completely custom turbocharger kit Which includes:

1.) Custom fabbed manifold (i made it)
2.) 1st Gen Eclipse Intercooler with 1 rotated outlet
3.) 1st Gen Eclipse Bov.
4.) NOS Nitrous oxide kit w/ 25 shot (wet TB)
5.) 2 1/2 inch mandrel bend exhaust (homemade)
6.) Eclipse Auto Trans 390cc/min injectors
7.) Apexi Safc Setup up for fuel metering per manifold pres.
8.) Autometer A/f and Boost guages.
9.) T3 turbocharger .48 A/r Compressor .42 Exhaust

That's bout it i think, I've been working on the kit for the past about 3 weeks, and it hink it's turned out pretty good. Ceck this pic out before i had the i/c piping and before i'd started it...

As soon as my shipment of a "wrx alike" powdercoat comes in, the charge pipes and valve cover will be done.

Tell me what you guys think!

Bradly

"Eclipse Auto Trans 390cc/min injectors"
Is this off a auto 4g63 turbo? How did you get it to work?

used the proper O-rings to make them fit in the fuel rail, and safc to tune them down.

they push 60% more fuel in, so i have to take out about 30-40% Fuel when not under boost, and then progressively less from there.

Did you use a resistor pack? You know they are low impedance right? We need high impedance ones.

Yes, forgot to mention that...

You gotta love radio shack for that.

Nice works !

And another perfect example of something that i'm telling for 2 years now
Garrett T3 and look-alikes from other manufacturers almost have the wprd Eclipse/Talon/Avenger/Sebring ready written on them

See how nice it fits in the engine bay ?
Why reinventing the wheel with turbos from first or second gen eclipse when the solution comes from Ford, Saab, Volvo etc

good job man... what are you using for fuel enrighment besides the injectors? A SFMU or the cartech regulator. And what fuel pump did you go with.?

Also how long do you think that copper paint will last? Also how much boost are you planning on running?

where did you get the piping to make your mainifold it looks pretty damm strong. I was thinking of getting a mig welder and start teaching myself how to weld. can you give me a link

I was thinking the same thing as Tommyboy. Where did you buy the flanges and piping for the turbo manifold? It does look pretty beefy. The manifold looks surprisingly like Alain's too!

Also, do you relize that from the perspective of the picture that the lower intercooler piping elbow coming off the compressor looks as if it's going to hit the head.

Here's a pic after driving it for a few hours.

the copper spray turns the color you see here, kind of like a primer gray. and it stays forever it doesn't burn off.

Umm, Fuel pump is stock fuel pressure is stock.

Fuel management Via Safc BOOST. Works great i recommend it to anyone.

Idle is like stock with the larger injectors, and gas mileage is great too, as non-boost conditions i have set at about -50% on the Safc.

The manifold is made up of Weld-ell's And Butt-weld pipe. Schedule 40 pipe. The header flange and Turbo flange i made myself, as well as the intercooler piping and everything else. 100% Custom! 25 shot of nos (wet) 1st gen DSM bov you can see mounted down below, and custom welded brackets to mount the intercooler. It pulls MUCH harder!

Boost controller i also made myself, which i will make for anyone for 30 dollars! it's not a bleed, it's a "hobbs type" pressure switch, which works perfect.

i bet alot of people would like to know, how much you have invested in this homemade kit.

The stock fuel pump is plenty capable of flowing the amount of fuel needed at stock pressures.

Total invested into kit.. .hrmmmm

I have MANY hookups, but let me think...

About 600 dollars. 300 of it being the Safc, So go from there :-)

Noone could do it for less than i did, i'm sure of it.

I'll build you guys manifolds if you're interested for 225 + shipping. having it coated is extra $ unless you would like a copper coat which i can apply and heat treat before i ship them. and trust me, they are VERY strong! Mig welded or dual shield. Whichever i feel like running.

I could probably turn up the boost more as i have PLENTY of fuel to play with. But playing it safe on a stock engine.

What kind of spray is that? My turbo is looking kinda .....'old' and I would like to freshen it up with something...

So what kind of fuel system are you running?

Oh yeah, RXR, why not just sand your turno. Looks damn shiney afterwards.

Leaning out with the sAFC decreases how much load the PCM think that the engine is under. This means that it will advance the timing. Just be careful in tuning it, as you need to tune more then just the fuel, you also need to tune the timing.

Boost is set at 6 lbs. No detonation at part throttle or full throttle yet. this motor wont' see more than 6 lbs. Based on tuning, under 6 lbs i have the a/f ratios at about 9-11:1 or therabouts, a bit rich, but it's what i want right now. I probably will end up backing the timing up a few degree's, but we'll see. I need to monitor IAT's to see how efficient my boost is. The plugs are looking good so far, and i see no signs of any detonation whatsoever.

I'm not using any other fuel enrichment than larger injectors and Safc.

When you keep the stock pressure, the pump is capable of higher flow. And it seeems to be working fine.

And as for the color of my manifold. If you'rs is RUSTY and CRAPPY looking. (As well as your turbine housing)

what you do, is you go down to Autozone/napa/checker any parts store, and get yorself a can of "Copper gasket spray"

It's usually about 6 bucks, and what you do is you spray the whole entire thing, untill it is covered with the copper. It will COMPLETELY STOP the rust, and will give it the "Iron Gray" color as you see in the last picture i posted of my engine bay.

It's a very durable coating, and it doesen't "chip off" and if it does, just spray it again!

oh yeah, and i'm located in Orem UTAH

hey if u can get more picture of the manifold i may be interested in one, what flanges do u have it setup with garret or mitsubishi?

im assuming garret but it is early in thr mourning for me =)

I don't know if you've done this or not, but if you do run into pressure problems then you may be able to get a bit more out of the stock pump by rewiring it. Here's Corbin's writeup from the mods section : http://www.2gnt.com/www/corbin/rewire.html

Hey could you get another close up pic of the turbo now that the copper coating turned its color. I'd like to see the final result of that copper spray just a bit better....

I have never seen your car around, I also have a custom kit. I spent about quadrouple what you spent & looks about half as nice :)
I would like to meet you somewhere, and talk. Maybe get a local dsm group going. Anyways congrats on the kit.

420aVenger- :wary Why did you run the IC piping the way you did?

lazerus- Nice kit. Is your car auto or manual?

It's a Manual. But the 3rd gear synchs are goin out... damn cheap syncrhos.

>>>420aVenger- Why did you run the IC piping the way you did?<<<

It's all I could do w/ the piping I had at the time. I'm impatient and wanted to get it done and not wait for more pipe. It's all getting redone for the FMIC so I just left it for now.

what size pipe did you use for the manifold? I'm also making one well having a friend make one and would like to know.

Thanks,
Chris

420aVenger, that piping configuration is crazy! i've never seen anything like that done before. looks like you moved your battery, and your PCM? or am i just drunk and is the avenger layed out slightly differently? your setup is really original and i think it looks cool. getting a FMIC sounds insane, wish i had that kind of cash to fork over and replace my 1g SMIC. well, it works well for now with stage 2 boost levels. anyways, i'm done now.

Naw, the avenger has the identical layout.

Matt relocated the battery, and if you look closely, you can see he move the PCM to where the battery used to be

that copper spray idea is interesting...looks a lot better than the maroon rust color i have going, lol
