3575, retard timing Posted by 95ESi, Apr-08-01 08:20 AM
since Wyatt has shown that our cars do some crazy things to timing at high RPM ranges, what are some things we can use to retard timing?
the Ultra J&S ? MSD?

Oh yeah...one other thing. What is better?
Being able to tune the overall timing (ie APEX SuperITC) or having the timing of an individual cylinder retarded automatically when knock occurs (J&S Safeguard)??

how about one of those MSD boost-retard contollers. i think you have to have an MSD or similar ignition first to hook it up to, but it's boost sensitive so it'll keep the timing advanced during off-boost conditions for max power and then when it detects boost, it pulls timing out. adjustable too so tuning it is as simple as turning a knob. that's the route i plan on going.

I am trying to hook that up in my car now. I learned that when the marketers said that it was for DIS-4, that's what they meant. I called up MSD tech and asked if it would work on the dis-2, they were like sure.....when I bought it, and took it home.......I made a quick call to msd tech ;) They are supposed to be sending me an adapter in the mail.....too bad I haven't got it yet, they will be getting a call from me tomorrow
Bring it on............

I would think a J&S would be sweet! The only thing is it only retards timing, And ITC woul dallow you to add timing at certain points. I'm going to use the MSD DIS2 to pull some timing out. I think thats a good way to increase spark AND pull timing. The J&S is more fo a saftey device. Wyatt Leras http://www.turbogs.com 98 Eclipse GS Star Stage 5,000 Turbo kit

LAST EDITED ON 08-Apr-01 AT 02:22 PM (PST)What about this?

It has a module that you can buy to monitor boost so you can retard timing appropriately. Does MSD have such a thing?
As well, do our cars even need the timing to be increased?
(J&S also increases spark energy much like the MSD does too.) I'm just worried about tuning the timing if I get MSD. I wouldn't even know when and where to start advancing/retarding the timing and by how much!

I wonder...can the J&S work in conjuction with an ITC? so it can save your ass if you screw up? :P

3582, Read this post I wrote a while ago... Posted by Skrilla, Apr-08-01 11:38 AM
the J&S is STRICTLY PRECAUTIONARY. Not for tuning but for engine protection. http://www.2gnt.com/dcforum/DCForumID13/337.html#1
