Has anyone heard of the Dis2 frying the igniters?


What do we need for an install in our cars? Dis2, tach adapter etc. etc.

I know MSD makes numerous options for it, but just need the bare bones requirements for install and the ability to retard timing.


I did a quick search and got mostly nothing. I have a friend selling one with tach adapter, but he keeps frying igniters with his AEM system. He is not totally sure that the Dis2 is not the cause. I can get it for cheap, but do not want big problems saving a few bucks.

the dis2 wont fry your ignition if hooked up right.. you need the dis2 and a tach adapter #8910 ( im not sure about the tach # ) but thats all you need. all you got to do it cut 3 wire at the coil, and solder the 6 ends coming from the dis2 to the 3 wires you just cut. and a negative and power to the battary.. hmm and plug the tach adapter into the dis2.

what car is he using the AEM system on? our car does not have igniters, our coil pack is directly driven by internal transistors within our ecu. the transistors are beefy and should not be burned out very easily. on a car with igniters the ecu has small transistors that switch a low current to an igniter that supplies the larger current to the coil to fire the cylinder. if he has the msd hooked up before the igniter then he may be blowing it because of the increased output of the msd. basically it would be overloading the igniter. if it is hooked up after the igniter it shouldn't burn igniters out because the current from the igniter will go through the msd. honestly it may be possible to use the msd inplace of the igniter in a car so equipped. the tach adapter part number is 8912 i think not 8910.

Thanks for the reply. I will check into his installation for the Dis2. I am also not sure which tach adapter that he has that comes with it. He is not using a tach adapter on his setup.

The price is VERY fair even if I have to buy my own adapter.

Which Dis2 options will work for our cars? All that are available?

Do all the dis 2's come with the 2 step rev limiter. or is that an option. Because i am really interested in getting one this winter. But only if i can get a 2 step. And if there is one does a switch mount on the back side of the clutch peddle. And when the clutch is in it is acctived then put it to the floor and when u let the clutch go she takes off.
