35050, Could be rod bearings?? Posted by toykilla, Nov-25-02 07:48 AM
Ever since rebuilding i'm hearing this loud clicking noise. It gets louder when I rev the engine and today my oil pressure dropped to 0 for no apparent reason. When I started the car again after about an hour the oil pressure was fine but still really loud clicking noise. What could it be? I'm thinking bearings but could it be anything else?

Sounds like bearings. Did you install them yourself, or did someone else do it? if someone else assembled the shortblock, see if they warranty thier work at all.

I did the work myself.

rule out the simple things first. exhaust leak will sound like a click and get louder when reved up. lifter tick??? i don't know what to tell you about the loss of oil pressure.

I also have a tick, tick ,tick from an exhaust leak. (my own fault for re-using the gasket). It is really loud when the car is cold, but goes away soon after she warms up.... Hope you don't have a spun bering ..that would really suck .. I guess you could pull the oil pan and check your rod berings...You would think that it would be pretty obviouse if one of them spun on you.

It really sucks, but I would say you do have a spun rod bearing. I have the exact same problem as you right now. :(

the nice part about the rod bearings is if u didn't spin one very bad or just didn't get enough oil in there and they squished u can do this with the motor still in the car....
if tis bad well u ill let u figure out what u gotta remove to have the crank turned =)

So how does a spun rod bearing cause low oil pressure? The oil pump is driven by the crank..I'd say you have an oil pump problem, and/ or bearing problem..Can you tell exactly where the noise is coming from?

It sounded like it was coming from around the crankshaft area. I was under the car and it was much louder than from above. Today was the first time i've EVER taken my car to a mechanic. I'm just so tired of messing with the damn thing. Hopefully I will get it back in perfect working order.

If you lost oil pressure, you could have easily spun a bearing. The longer you drive it, the more damage you might be doing.
You could try and change you oil to 20W50 and see if it quiets down. If it does, then you have a bearing problem......my guess. If it is completely spun, I am not sure if it will quiet down or not.
Replace oil pump and bearings if this is what your troubleshooting leads you to.

Hey if you spin a bearing then that would cause to much clearance in the jearnal and cause oil pressure drop.

Because there are oil ports going through the bearings. When one of the bearings burns up, it opens a larger clearance between the bearing and the crank, allowing more of that oil pressure to escape. One of the classic signs of a spun bearing/bearing problem is low oil pressure.

Did you install a new oil pump while doing your rebuild? If not, then consider this a lesson learned.

Sounds like the CLASSIC spun bearing problem. Trust me, done it twice, NOT FUN. Low oil pressure will do it every time.

Shit, sounds like a rod bearing to me. And yes, I've spun one in my car too, unfortunately it's a common problem with our cars..... :(

I finally just broke down and took my car to a mechanic. I was just so tired of fucking with it. Anyways, he's saying that he talked to Mitsubishi and they said that if you blow something in "this" engine it's fucked for good. He said I could fix and fix and fix but the same problem with occur again within a year or so. I find this hard to believe but what do you guys think? Especially you blow piston turbo guys that have rebuilt. I'm just gonna replace the rod bearings, they sell them at Advance Auto Parts for like $7.50 each. Hopefully it will fix the problem because I don't have money for that Howell 2.2L at the moment. Thanks all for your thoughts on the matter.

i think he is a dum ass.. its not going to happen every year unless you dont take care of your car, or if that person does not install the bearings correctly.

I have personally never spun a rod bering *knock on wood* but one would think that if you replace them now it should be good for quite some time...I mean I had 100k on my car with the original berings...they were perfect. I did replace them on both rebuilds though.

>i think he is a dum ass.. its not going to happen every year >unless you dont take care of your car, or if that person >does not install the bearings correctly. > I was actually referring to the fact that I blew my #3 piston. Not the spun bearing that occured after the rebuild. This so called mechanic is saying that me blowing the piston fucked my engine for good and it will never run the same, even with it bored, rebuilt and everything else you can do to fix this kind of problem. He wants $2,500 for a 420a engine with 35,000 miles on it. HAHAHA Howell = $2,400 for 2.2 stroker and fully rebuilt block. What does this guy take me for. He also wants $1,600 just to do a simple engine install. Yea, I take my chances with the spun bearing and my engine being fucked for that price. I don't think he thought he was talking to someone who has taken their engine out of their car twice already.

He is full of shit. It will not be a problem. Just fix your rod bearings. Never heard something like that. I have managed 30,xxx miles on my block with the JE pistons after I cracked two piston ringlands and no problems. I have bad bearings now, but that is because my dumb ass let the oil pump fail. I mark that up as an idiot mistake when my engine was rebuilt back in 99.
The only problem I know of on any eclipse that has been deemed unfixable is crankwalk on a 4G63, and they have found ways to fix that as well. I would start looking for a new mechanic. I would recommend maybe finding a shop that does performance work for neons if you can.

I normally do the work myself but I was just so fed up with the consistant problems that I broke down and took it to a shop that specializes in foreign car repair. I picked the car back up today, not letting someone like that touch my car. I will check and replace rod bearings myself and next time. If I break down again sometime I will take it somewhere that specializes in Neon work. Thanks all.
