anyone here ever used Seal-Power piston rings? I need a part number for it or atleast a JE equivalent part number for the Howell 8.6, 20 over. rebuild kit. They have to be for the file-to-fit type as well.

Not going to use my total seal ring set. too many bad things about them.

Anyone that has this information, or can help me find it will be a big help. Looking forward to getting my shit up and running by the friday of next week.

yah, why not je rings? as far as i know they will work for the howell 8.6 compression piston right james?... call je up and they should give you the part # for the rings...
next week? gosh darn it... is this going to take 4 weeks?

Or you could get Hastings rings, they're cheap and fit the JE's too.

After a failure to find Seal powers with our bore size, i broke down and purchased the JE rings.

Part number JC 1004-3465

I noticed that the JE ring diameter is 3.465, However the bore diameter of the JE piston that I received from Howell is 3.464.

Will the 0.001" matter?

Randy from JE said it will fit. I just want to make sure I have proper clearance now that we are playing around with expanding aluminum pistons.

it should work dude. i know of some members who have the howell bottom end kit and got the je rings for it from hrc.

yeah they shoudl be of no problem. As I gave them the off the shelf number for the JE pistons from Howell.

I still want to know why Howell and HRC advertise 8.6 and 8.8 compression though.

nooo problem,
as the rings wear the gap will increase. i think they give you the overlap so the wear that occurs during breakin will be compensated for.

alright, I got my new JE rings in a day via ground shipping. To my surprise, when I open the box I found a yellow sheet of paper.

Written across the top is a warning. It says:

"Warning!!! These are file-fit rings!"

I thought they were drop in style rings?James? Mike? Dan?

same part and pac # on my rings from hrc for the je rings. my rings came in the same box as the pistons, locks, pins etc.
if its from hrc same rings etc im 99% sure it will work.
ask the shop whos doing your install also

James helped me out, the totalseals are file to fit too.

He used a dremel with a ceramic cutoff wheel and just pressed the rings up against the flat end. You have to keep dropping it into the cylinder and checking the gap with a feeler gauge.

Check with JE or HRC for ring end gap for your application. It's not on the JE piston spec sheet, probably cause different ring sets use different gaps.

The totalseals are supposed to be gapped .023 top ring and .018 middle ring according to Howell. This is actually a little larger than Totalseal recommends (I think they only specified approx .021 and .015) Bottom ring(s) don't need to be filed since it just picks up oil.
