34280, 97+ fuel system parts list. for sfmu and steel braided lines

Ok heres the deal. I am going to redo all my lines and my fpr is going in the garbage. I am buying the sfmu. Right now I have the fpr hooked up with rubber hose. Does the sfmu come with an fittings on it? If not what do I need? How much braided line do I need? Thanks in advance.

The in/out lines on the SFMU are both -6AN. You need two of those. So no it doesn't come w/ them. You can get those w/ nipples and use rubber fuel line or get SS braided line and use the correct AN fittings for that. I have my Reg mounted on the driver's side shock tower and I think I needed 3ft of line to get there from the rail. I wouldn't advise doens't the return line w/ braided unless you have tons of money to blow. It'd cost about $130+ to get enough line to get back to the tank. What I did was buy aluminum fuel line (I think 25' for $20) and flare the end that connects to the SFMU. You can buy a 6AN fitting that accepts flares.

When my turbo kit was installed I did it along with Ray and Sean. Ray decided to run 2 fuel lines to the front of the car in the engine bay and put the fpr there. So basicaly I have the fpr hooked up like as if it was in the back but the 2 fuel lines are very long and allow it to be mounted up front. I have no clue how the fuel set up is "supposed" to be on a 97+. Its been so long since I messed with my fuel system. Its almost been 2 years...LOL. I have heard of people only having 1 return line added to the car. And I heard that you are supposed to hook a line up to the passenger side end of the fuel rail. I have no line on the passenger side end of the rail now, its capped off. Can some one breifly describe where the connections are supposed to go and to where with the sfmu? Thanks...

Well here is a pic of the sfmu he is getting. I think the feed comes with a 5/16" barb or whatever AN than is and than the bottom is for 3/8" I believe.

Dave,
here is some info for you! look here first on how to build steel braided lines http://www.anplumbing.com/SWIVEL_SEAL_HOSE_ENDS.html

Then the fuel system works like this starting from the gas tank. The gas tank has an out from the fuel pump that is threaded, this hose should connect to the fuel filter, then from the fuel filter there will be a hose that the HRC fuel pump will be connected to. on the hrc fuel pump OUT will be the place you will not be able to use an AN fitting since it is already a barb. you will slip the -6 AN hose on the barb. this Steel braided hose will go from the fuel pump then under the car along side the old hardlines (I zip tied them there) to the fuel rail line (I do not know what fitting size this is) the steel braided line will be connected to the hose that comes from the fuel rail with some fittings( you need to find the right ones) then from the fuel rail there should be a -4AN test port on the passenger side of the fuel rail. the cap and the needle inside need to be removed. you will need a fitting to fit on this so a hose can be placed there and then to the IN on the SFMU. then from the SFMU OUT you will need a -6AN fitting and this will be connected to a steel braided line that will return fuel to the tank. I had to make a custom return hose and fitting for the tank because i used the -6 AN for a return line, you should use the same size fuel line going in and out of the SFMU or you will have problems. if you do not want to use steel braided line you could use rubber fuel injection hose, this would make things a little easier but you won't have the strength of the steel braided line. this is basically how you should have it run, i left out some details because you have to see what way you want to run it first. if you need any more info let me know

That explanation tells me I need 2 lines under the car I need to add. How do some people have only 1 line? And BTW I have a intank walbro 255 not the HRC pump.

That may be your problem. That pump is only good to about 9-10psi. Maybe you have an in-line pump too I don't know.

now is this the same for 96 models??? i am planning to buy an SFMU that is why i ask so i can save this.

James i am sorry to ask this but can you post some pictures of how you ran everything and how everything is connected so i can see more info and get a better understanding on it because i am kind of lost

sorry

thanks

Can't pull any diagrams out of my ass this time. I put a S-FMU in a '96 this spring and ran a return line made out of brake line. I just did it on the fly, so I don't remember enough details to make a diagram. If someone made a decent pic page for adding a S-FMU with return line, I'm sure 2GNT could host it (or link).

I will get on it, i will try to get you part numbers too, I used all xrp fittings total for all of it probably cost 200 bucks. I removed all existing fuel hardlines and replaced them with -6 AN steel braided lines
let me see if i can come up with a quick diagram. remember my car is a 95 so the fuel filter is in the front. i would recommend for the 97-99 people to maybe ditch the stock fuel regulator and get an inline that has -6 AN in and out.

They prob ran 2 lines up front from the back so as not to use the stock fuel feed line going to the fuel rail. So you now have a braided fuel feed line coming from the fuel tank/ fuel filter, that goes to the fuel rail supply. Then, you have another line that is coming from the FPR going back to the fuel tank, as the fuel return line. Your all set really. Just have your fuel feed line going into the fuel rail, and then use the test port on the pass side of the fuel rail to go into the SFMU inlet, then the outlet of the SFMU will go to your fuel return line back to the tank. The SFMU just acts as a fuel bleeder, to bleed off fule flow and pressure back into the fuel tank to control fuel pressure.

Dave from what i know of the 97-99 fuel system i think i know how it was installed in your car. The fuel pressure regulator on your car was in the back by the tank and was connected to the fuel filter. this returned the fuel back to the tank before it got to the fuel filter. i think what happened was that in order to put the fmu in the front they ran a line from the fuel filter to the fmu and then back to the tank for return. this would leave your fuel line from the tank to the fuel rail intact. you were telling me that you did not have anything connected to the test port on the fuel rail, so i'm pretty sure this is what they did. I honestly think the fuel system will work better if you route it like i sketched, you will need to work out the fitting issue because your fuel filter is in the back. I am not sure what you will need specifically, but check out the sketch and see if you can make it out.

the walbro maxes out at 9-10psi with STOCK injectors....he has 440's. so he shoulde be able to run more than 10psi without going lean for sure.

With 440's I could run 18 psi easily with the walbro. Just need the msd and I'll be breaking into the 12's

hey guys is alright to only run 1 pump right ??

I am running the Walboro high pressure one will that push enough for the Sfmu. I do see on the diagram that there is an inline pump.

How did you guy make the adapter for the end of the fuel rail ???

Also how did you guys make a return line did you have to drill into the plate that the FP is hooked up to.

Hey Dave when are you coming down to miami again ?? maybe after you get yours done you can give some miami peple a lil bit of help ?? :)
hope your setup comes out good..

With AN fittings.

No you just clamp a hose to where the stock return line goes on the fuel pump assembly.

thanks matt.

What i do not get is that there is a lil connector at the right end of fuel rail. Does that have to come off or do i have to cut it and put a fitting in there. Hey matt if it is not a big deal could you post pictures of your stuff done so i can get an idea. Now the return line is that little looking L that is right next to the feed line right. The skinnier pipe of the too on the fuel pump mounting correct ????

Yes there are only 2 outlets on the fuel pump assy. One is the feed and the smaller one is the return line. It's where the rubber line came from the stock FPR.

As for the rail, the end fitting on there takes a -4AN connector. After the connector you can do whatever combo of fitting/lines you need to get to the FPR. As for pics I don't have any online right now but if I can get my web space to work then I'll post some. Or e-mail me and I'll reply w/ some pics when I get home.

dang I had forgoten about the stock FPR under the car. So i need to get a fitting to the fuel rail and run steel braided line to the SFMU and then run another steel braided to the return and that is it right ????

Yeah on the first part but like I said earlier, unless you have money to throw away then I wouldn't do SS braided to the tank. It's like 15' and that would cost like $120+. I used aluminum fuel line that I bought for ~$20 and it works great. Easily bendible and zip tied to the existing hard lines.

"I used aluminum fuel line that I bought for ~$20 and it works great."

wich are these ?? hell no i will not want to spend on 15 feel of steel braided. heehehe i am broke, hey but what about can't the same lines running back trough the stock fpr be used ????

There is no return line from the engine bay on 96+. The return line comes from the reg which is back by the gas tank. So there is a return line but it's only like a foot long and it's already back there. That's why we need to run our own.

I dont understand the part about the custom return port on the tank. Does this mean I have to drill int othe tank or soemthing? If I do I think i'll pass on that. So that drawing is the way it should be done? Isnt their an easier way?
34311, RE: 97+ fuel system parts list. for sfmu and steel braided lines
Posted by 420aVenger, Nov-17-02 01:42 PM
Ok forget the drawing for a sec. This is what you need to do since you have a 98. Get a -4AN fitting and screw it on the test port on the pass side of the rail. Get a -4AN to -6AN converter and then run a -6AN line from the rail to your inlet on the SFMU. Then run a -6AN fitting from the return port and hook a hose/line to it and run it back to the return nipple on the fuel pump assembly. When you look at the assembly it is the back nipple. There is the feed line that is screwed on then the other is the return. You just leave your stock feed line hooked up.

The drawing is fine and obviously works but you don't need to do all that.
