34174, Newbie asks questions Posted by FakeID, Nov-10-02 08:25 AM
Hey guys, whats up. I'm new to your board. I've been doing searchs and reading hella info, but I still have a few questions. I bought a turbo system for my S-10 and have found it'll be too small for what I wanna do. So I'm giving it to my bud GTAGRIP for X-Mas. Here's a list of what we've got now.
1.250 Deltagate w/black spring (9-13psi)
A2A 24"-9"-3.5" w/2.5 in/out
HKS 36mm BOV
T3/T4 (possibly off GN) w/.82 housing (maybe 46 compressor wheel?)
And we're making headers from the one's that were for my S-10 1.5" stainless steel. I'm going for equal length if possible.
My first question is what housing do you guys usually use with the T3/T4? I'm guessing a .48 or maybe a .52. I'm sending the turbo in for a rebuild and I figured whoever is doing the work will recommend something, I just wanna ask some peoples who actually have experence what they'd run.
Secondly I've seen that you can change injectors and the ECU does a fairly good job of adjusting and allowing for lower overall pressure. Are plans are to get an inline pump and a FMU(either the vortech or the Cartech from Bell). I personally would like to see a return system with larger injectors and lower pressure. Its GTAGRIP's duties to handle the fuel system as I can't afford it, and I don't know how much he wants to afford, so I don't know which way he's gonna go. My question is how affective is the lager injectors VS just raising pressure? Should we just start small and work into the whole sha-bang?
Anyway thank for all the info I've found already, and for any more you guys share. I know all this has probally been covered before. If anyone knows a thread link or good phrase to search please share.

you may not get too many responses off this site, almost exclusivly 420a only guys. However, i used to have a turbo charged S-10 and here is my story:
Before I bought my 2gnt, I owned an 88 S-10 blazer and had a t3/t4 (no intercooler), I used basically the same FPR we use on the eclipse. It is the vortech one. We have had some problems recorded with the cartech one, so stay away from it. How much power you want to do with your truck? I was running low 13's with that t3\t4. 330 hp to the rear 235\65p17 tires and pump gas... If you build up that motor, that turbo will take you along way, plus that 6cyl (if you have the 4.3Z not W motor is what i had) really builds up to full boost quick. I had no problem beating Syclones and Typhons around the neighborhood. Heck i could run with some fast ass GN's around too. You can do alot with that motor and turbo, you may be surprised. Before my dad started boosting on his 95 Z28 i can take him up to about 110MPH, then he caught up with me, my cam was made for stop light to stop light racing not freeway running. But before you go giving away that turbo i would do a little bit more research, that is a great bang for your buck turbo. I'll try and find some reciepts this week so i can let you know what fuel pump i went to.... the whole fuel system cost under 300 for pump and fpr, the turbo i bought from turbo city for 500 give or take, and we made all the piping we needed at my buddies muffler shop. I had dug thorley headers on, so we just hooked a flange up to that, and bam i was turboed. Ahhhh but i miss my blazer...... Good luck on your expedition to get more power out of that thing. Just remember to get what ever car you turbo or force air into plenty of fuel, that is the most important part. and keep the egt's down, my s10 ran around 900 degrees at it's hottest in the summer in cali.
good luck
-danny.

I understand the question he is asking about, however i just stated for his referance that the turbo for his truck can produce serious streetable power, using specific examples, it worked out beter then the vortech my buddy had on his s-10 with an aftercooler, and my other buddy that had a paxton on his s-10. and fuel questions have run wild around here... I do believe that those quetions have been answerer if you do a search. However if you want to keep cost in mind, i would suggest getting a high flow fuel pump, such as the holley, or walbro 255lph fuel pump and an fmu, if you go the injector route your lookin at spending some cash. Do some more reasearch to find out just howmuch power you are going to want out of your car, and deal with it that way, just keep supplying the fuel. About housing sizing: The one i have now looks a bit smaller then the one i had on my blazer (which was a .52), so i would guess .48 , look at turbonetics.com, which takes you to performance techniqes web site (biggest turbonetics dealer), give them a call, and they will tell you all the usable info you need to know (like what housing is shipped to drag, and star for there kits), and hell you may get some cheap flanges out of it for your upcoming custom exhaust manifold project. I also noticed you were sending the turbo in for rebuild..... You can do that yourself to save some cash. I understand that they are balanced and all that, but you can just go to turbocity.com, or turbonetics.com, and purchase a rebuild kit from them, give them a call sometimes you can work out free shipping, or a better price. I have dealt with both companies face to face, and they are good at what they do, performance techniques know ALOT, just kind of they are kinda jerky to if you don't know them...

Well I guess I should have been more clear about whats going on. Sorry for the confusion guys. Thanks 98RsT for the Info. On my S-10 I converting to Oddfire, and getting a TEC³. The T3/T4 won't stand a chance. I may talk myself into TT before its all over. Anyway
I wanted to hear from some of the guys running the T3/T4 on the 420a before calling whoever for the new housing. As well as how much injectors can handle without big pressure gains. (will the ECU run low imp.?) Basically I don't wanna start with a flawed plan cause it ain't gonna be my ride I'm working on. I'll definately give those folks you recommended a call when the time comes. And it's good to hear the rebuild is something I can do. I tore down the turbo minus the center secton. I didn't want to pull the shaft out and have all kinds of small stuff fall out and have to send it in in very small peices. The turbine wheel is damaged slightly and it feels like theres alittle play in the shaft.
I talked to GTAGRIP today and I think we're going with the Vortech FPR/FMU and an inline. I had heard from some off the S-10 guys that the Cartech is a good one. But I'll take your word since I haven't really heard anything bad about the Vortech. Then after we get that worked out look into internals, injectors, stall, ect... He's switching to the same work schedule as me so we'll be able to sit down and work all this out better soon.
I'm a Toolmaker Apprentice so all the brackets, flanges, etc..., are going to be in house CNC'd. And the place I work for is going to buy the materials too. God I love my job! I'm hoping (hint, hint) that GTAGRIP will snag some low profile E-Fans to free up space for the plumbing. I'd like to run the header so as to align the compressor housing with the EGR, and remove the EGR if thats what that little bit of nonsence next to the engine lift bracket is. Then I figure we'll use the lift bracket holes to mount a support for the turbo. I'm thinking the support bracket will have to float on atleast one axis for expantion but other than that should be easy to fab.
Anyhow thanks for the help. It is appreacated

I'd go w/ the .52 housing. According to turbonetics, the .48 is not very efficient and the .52 will spool up quicker AND allow for more boost efficiently.
A return system is easy to make. You can do it all w/ high quality parts for $100 or less. I think the preferred method obviously would be to have lower pressure with larger injectors. The problem there lies in calculating the rise ratio you'll need and getting them to work across the entire rpm range while keeping your timing in check. A few people lately have had luck getting it to idle w/ larger injectors and fairly normal base pressures. good luck.

Ohh, Damn, I forgot a big question I have. In all the reading I've done on this board I've yet to see anything done to timing. No boost spark retard boxes or new proms. Is the ECU in these really that smart? We've got the MSD box on there already (for plug fouling issues) but if the ECU can handle it kickass.

Depends on your boost levels. If your boost is fairly low (<12psi), I don't think there's need for timing control. If you plan to go above that, you may want to look into it. I haven't gone that high yet, so someone else will have to step in and help on this one if you still need to know about it.

Ed, you're gonna have to answer that one. How far are we going? I think the wastegate starts at 9lbs. It may be a little week and need a new spring allowing for slightly less. If you want to start lower then I'll get a lighter spring. But, let us know man how much pressure is enough?
