34121, 440's and no s-afc

Well I tried it and my car was backfiring like crazy!!! It almost wouldnt even start. Then I tried to drive it like that and it wasnt even drivable without leaving a cloud of black smoke behind the car and a back fire every few seconds. I even dropped my idle fuel pressure down to ~15psi and reset my computer. I have no clue how you guys can do this.

well some people got the 440cc with our hrc kit. just have to lower the idle fp alot, and the rise/rate has to be pretty low. im not sure what the hrc fpr rise/rate is. i forgot.. i think before anything, you need to get a better fpr, like the s-fmu use a low idle fp low disk. then use the afc for fine tuning. armond did it with someones car with 440cc s-fmu etc

Yea, you need to set your idle fuel pressure to around 15 psi I believe, and start the car and let it sit for a bit to allow the fuel trims to adjust at idle. You need a 1:1 (or close) regulator to give you the proper fuel pressure rise rate as well. If you have a 3:1 or higher rise rate, it isn't gonna work. I dont know if 2:1 would work or not, I'd need to do the math.

I think maybe if you get the SFMU then it would work. I've been talking to Mark (96Venger) and we have the same setup. 13psi at idle, 24psi static, and a 4.5:1 rise rate. You should see 90psi fuel at 15psi boost. Do you have a datalogger? If so what are your fuel trims at idle, closed loop driving? After you reset your computer did you let it idle until the LTFT adjusted to -25%? If not then reset the computer again and when you start it let it idle until the LTFT goes to max (it took mine about 5-8 minutes to do it) and then drive around for a while at different partial throttle and closed loop boost conditions so it can adjust.

Matt, if he uses a 1:1 rise rate w/ the static pressure that he needs to keep the fuel trims ok then he'll blow his car up in a second if he tries to boost ;) He would only have 40psi fuel pressure at 15psi boost when he needs ~85-90psi.

If your're still using the HRC FPR, then thats your problem right there. That regulator isnt an adjustable one, so you are getting waaayyy to much rise rate fuel pressure for what you are using. You MUST get an adjustable FPR like the SFMU if you want to use your setup without the SAFC. The rise rate of the Cartach FPR is too high for anything over stock size injectors, without using the SAFC. That regulator is built and designed for stock injectors, and the S16G combo setup on the 420A..

thats one part of his melting piston prob. besides tuning the afc. without proper fuel and ignition tuning your car is going to run like crap etc. see im right so far... :D ...

When my pistons melted my Air Fuel ratio was at .94-.96 throught the whole rpm range. I know for a fact I was getting enough fuel. I really need to get rid of this crappy fpr though. I cant get the pressure to go under 90 psi at full throttle. Looks like the first thing I am going to get is the vortech sfmu. I think my pistons melted because I blew out the head gasket while boosting 15 psi on a long highway pull and my temp gauge shot up into the red.

You mean your coolant temp gauge??? If so, then yes, that is definately what caused your problem.

B.T.W. My bad on the 1:1 regulator thing. For some reason when I was figuring out roughly what the fuel pressure should be, I was adding pressure from 45 psi of static pressure instead of the 15 psi that I suggested :rolleyes I think i was stuck on the 1:1 regulator also since that is what Chris and Armond did with the 550's if i remember right.

yah with 440cc injecs some are using the 1.5/2.1 disk ring etc. some are using the 2.72"disk ring. just as long as you get the correct fp you should be cool.
hey dave, did you have your gauge out each time you ran the car hard? maybe your melting the pistons did not happen just because of one thing. im no expert but i know something 'could' go wrong if you have to much fuel also. i know your a/f was cool, but i need someone to remind me what happens when you have to much fuel with a hmm how can i explain it.. improper fpr?... well you know what i mean... fuel and timing are the big dogs in having your car run right.
well anyways yah, get those two items and your rocking. :D

I e-mailed the guy at Cartech the other day and he said

Assuming that you have the 2025 FMU there should be no problem adjusting
it down to 4 to 1 with no modifications.

I am just going to continue to run 9-10 psi untill I get the sfmu and the msd which will be in about a month or 2. Shouldnt be long untill I am back up to 15 psi! Safely this time..lol

How long did you let the car sit after resetting the ecu? Give it about 10 minutes. It will spit and sputter for a while until it finally corrects itself. I just left it there like that until it started working. Expect it to run like shit at first as it works itself out. My fp is set static to 45psi and idles dead on.

isn't 90 psi FP on 440 cc injectors at 15 psi a little too much fuel? I am running 65 psi at 14 psi and i get .95-.96 o2 voltages, or am i missing something?
thanks
James
