33342, ah shit....
Posted by eclipsekaiser, Oct-25-02 08:47 AM
well today while on the freeway I boosted...

heard a loud pop like squeezing a rubber baloon in a confined space, and CEL 43 came on. On the road the car starting idling rough. Put put, put, put, put.

Plugged into lap top and got cylinder 4 misfire, and multiple cylinder misfire.

replaced with new ignition coil....nothing. NGK wires are within 4k, plugs are the 7e-11. No signs of detonation on them.

I removed the dip stick with the motor running... spurts of air coming out of it. Also slight smoke as well.

funny thing is that the catch can is not full. no oil in there...weird.

what else can it be...is my time of rebuild due...didn't think it was this soon. BArely boosted for 6k miles at 57k on the odo.

I will perform a compression test tonight to see if it infact is my....:(

if i remember correctly that means one or more of your rings are gone. Sucks dude, but sounds like your gonna have to rebuild.

Test the compression to be sure, but yeah it sounds like at least one of the rings is gone.

If you got puffin out the dipstick tube, like a good amount, then you broke a piston ring landing on the piston. I know, i did. Rough idle, and that blow by is a sure sign. I'd bet if you do a compression test, one or more cylinders will be very low. I didnt have much oil in my catch can either, so that isnt going to tell you much. Sucks :(
How much boost you running? Your fuel setup? You know what your o2 WOT voltgages were? You got detonation, as it will be hard to tell how severe by looking at the plugs. All it takes is a little bit at a higher boost level to crack the piston.

XtremeRS: i was at 5psi intercooled, 235cc, 3.62", dark spring. Fuel pressure is at stead 45 idle, and 85 at full boost. WOT lately been in the range of 0.88-0.92 via datalogger. Corbin gauge register a 0.96. So i figure i take an average of the two instruments. there was no audiable detonation, but that does not mean it is not there.

James, definitely we will have to get together for this shit. I bought the compression tester and will perform one when my GF get's here tonight. But look forward to me giving you a call this weekend to setup for monday. Oh, yeah I was on it. Cute girl in a GST...I had to represent.

More info: thus far I replaced the ignition coil, plugs, wires, PCV valve, PCV tube, and still get the stumble idle. Still get those puffs of air coming out of the dip stick at idle.

I fear I may have cracked pistons on those 235cc.

Will perform a comp. test to obtain closure.

what are some of my options in terms of rebuilds. Obvioulsy the Howell bottom end/top end rebuild kit. is this kit that complete, or will I need other parts...ie: head studs.

Anythign else I shoudl do while the motor is apart? car has 57k only. Tiing belt, waterpump, idler pully....etc?

thanx.

man shit kaiser, that sucks, if you need me to look at it just let me know, i will be in oakland this weekend but feel free to call my caell if you got any questions. if you need we can get together on monday. do that compression test and see wassup. if it is bad, i am almost sure the ring land is cracked, especially in cylinder 4. i think that is the same cylinder that most of us had problems with. were you driving it hard when you got the misfire?

Definitely do a compression to know for sure, but it does sound like you probably cracked a piston and/or ring. Like the others mentioned, if there's smoke coming from the dip stick tubing, or if there's bad blowby (like a cup of oil in the catch can), then something bad has happened--not necessarily detonation, but probably, just piston/ring failure (cheap ass factory parts). At least that's what happened to me when mine stock internals gave.

Yup you broke a ring land! downer man, Good news is, it only takes like 2 days to rebuild one :)(granted no machine shop time is in order). I think that everyone on here knows that their engine will blow sooner or later even a lower boost levels.

dude, let me know what you guys do,, if you both meet up and im free i wanna hang... i can learn a bit more if so... i got a compression gauge if you need one kaiser.. can you drive it ? or its like a lost cause?... our compression check should tell us whats going on... i got to check my compression sometime this month, my idle is starting to get pretty low and mess up but it still runs like a mad man...hehe

J/K that sux man... anything we can do to help ya out... I know you've been planning on blowing for a while, so hopefully we can get her bigger and badder nice and quickly... Good luck with the compression test.

ahhh shit that scares me alot... maybe i should rebuild :(
33353, Here is the update...found the problem
Posted by eclipsekaiser, Oct-26-02 02:46 PM
Been bummed at work so haven't had time to check the board.

compression testing yeild: (cylinder1-4) 190, 155, 200, 90

Yeah something broke.

Also found the problem. The boost-wastegate signal hose blew off, hence spooling it to 1.10 bar (blitz TT recorded). So yeah 235cc definitely can't handle 14.7+ psi of pressure.

I pray it is only pistons and not any of my valves, as well hoping no overboring will be necessary.

Block only has 57k on it, and blow by through the dipstick is minimal. Car still idles fine, so I hope it will just be a straight forward operation.

What are some of the other things I can replace while everythign is apart? timing belt related parts?...etc

oh and what is this Howell replacement block I've been hearing about?
thanx

Yep, i blew my piston ring lands on #4 also, with 90 psi of compression also :(

Piston ring lands :(

I highly doubt anything happened to the valves, but its always possible i suppose, wont know until its apart really. Sounds like on your 155 comp cylinder, you may have broke only the top piston ring land. You broke both on the #4 for sure. Thats what mine were like.

Might as well replace all timing belt parts while your at it, but they will be in great condition, most likely. Was all that replaced with the new block before?

Its a job getting down to the pistons, but its not that hard, just time consuming. Matt_95tgs and I tore apart my engine down to the pistons, with block still in the car, and put it all back together in about 14 hrs. Luckily he had a spare piston or two to get me rollin again. Good luck with it :thumbsup

Once you get your pistons out, #4 may look like this.. OUCH!

yah 4 needs some work, and two is on its way dude.. sorry man... thats why i got all my lines secure so it wont blow off well atleast i hope...too bad you did not blow up in a better way, like 15psi for 10secs atleast you know what i mean?...well if u do a leak down test dude that will pinpoint the problems in # 2 and 4... the bore should be ok, if you took care of your engine, keeping up on your oil changes etc.. howells prebuilt block is built and is sopose to be good... small little problems but overall its good i hear... its 2200 without returning your block to them, so total is like 2400 shipped to us in so ca to your house... i would not send back the old block since its going to cost you the same amount you are sopose to save... if you get the block from howell i might go this route if your block is 'plug in'... i would get a tensioner pulley, water pump, new belts if not done yet including timing belt... and new head gasket... hmm i would get the head studs for 140 since you are there already you know?...extras should be 300 most for bottom end crap... try doing the wet compression test, and that will tell you more info about #2 and 4...
let us know what happens bro...

That sux Kaiser! Sorry to hear about your unfortunate mishap. Look on the bright side, at least you felt ~16psi for a couple of seconds. :-) Still amazes me how Eric C's old Star GS withstood all that high boost without breaking for a heck of a long time. Let us know if you need help.

Start a thread in the Announcements section for another so.cal meet at your house for the rebuild! Heck if James, and Dan are already going make it an outing!
Blah... My ol'lady in the background says us 2gnters will find any reason to get together to have fun with cars and drink beer!

But i would like to help where ever i can.

Good luck.

yeah thanx for the offer. I managed to find a shop locally that will rebuild my motor to my specs.

I'm going with the basic Howell components, while ditching the total seal rings and goign with somethign else.

Since the car has only 57k, will replace the T-belt, water pump, HG, VC gasket, plug gasket, exh mani gasket...tbelt pulley, and tensioner.

Also playing with the idea of Pt cruiser component parts for the top end.

IF I'm really lucky, I can achieve all this and be back on the road for under 3500.

It is harder gathering parts than it is finding a shop.

Advice: if you plan on rebuilding, get the parts early...:P

Conveniently near a timing belt interval. Look for the silver lining, man, look for the silver lining...
-=B-= <===== wishes he could keep a motor together long enough to require a timing belt job...

Thanx for the heads up the 1bill, and the rest of you all a big thanx.

Hopefully it will be done right the first time so that i can join the ranks of stage 3 soon.

Once again much thanx to you all.
