33159, DIY Turbo kit parts list ?
Posted by Joshua97478, Oct-22-02 03:00 AM
Ok, it's been a slow day at work. I've been trying to rack my brain to put together a comprehensive Do it yourself turbo kit parts list. Feel free to add/change anything on my list. I'm just trying to get as complete a list as i can. Maybe it will help those of us that are looking at putting our own kits together... Feel Free to add prices/parts numbers/links etc. Also, this list doesn't take into account having all the piping for the intercooler custom mandrel bent.

Turbocharger: $1099 for Super25G from HRC
Exhaust Manifold: ~ $250.00 from Alain (is that the right amount?)
Front Mount Intercooler: $520.00 from Turbochargers.com
Fuel Pressure Regulator: $289.69 for Vortech SFMU from Summit
Fuel Pump: $119.95 for Walbro Fuel pump from Howell
Blow Off Valve: $179 for TurboXS RFL
Extra Injector Controller: $350.00 from 034efi.com
Oil Feed Line: $80 from HRC
Head Studs: $139.99 from HRC
Exhaust Manifold Gasket: $32.00 from HRC
Boost Gauge: $ 69.95 Autometer 4103 from Summit 30Vac/30Boost
Fuel Pressure Gauge: $229.95 Autometer 4163 Electric
EGT Gauge: $159.95 Autometer 4144
A/F Gauge: $79.95 Autometer 4175

That's all i can think of for right now. I'm sure i've missed some things, and i could probably save money by not getting everything brand new, getting a smaller turbo to start, etc.

Downpipe??
intercooler piping????
injectors?? for your extra injector controller
clamps??
silicon elbows/connectors??

you need to go here and forget the DIY

http://www.turbosystem.com/
Your already at 3600 bucks
why would you want to do that you could have the stage 2 kit plus some with that amount of money

I was bored.... But yes, i do realize that getting a kit might be the better way to go. The only way to really save any money by building it your self would be to buy used parts. But chances are, i wont be able to plunk down 3 G's for a kit. I MIGHT be able to get 300 here, 400 there, etc and piece one together.

It appears from your list that you're going for the 8 injector setup, so you'll also need an extra fuel rail (~$80 from Bob Kise), fuel hosing, and injectors.

Also, you'll need:
oil dump tube from turbo
oil dump hosing
oil dump fitting (to oil pan)
oil feed T fitting (from block)
silicon sleeves for piping
worm clamps (or some other type)
Wastegate (unless you go internal WG)
Downpipe

That's all I want to think of for now. I'm sure there's more. It won't be cheap or easy, but I'm sure you're already aware of that.

good luck,
matt

<EDIT>
(I didn't read the post above before I posted, so some of this is repetitive...sorry)

I really would not attempt a custom turbo kit at the same time as an 8 injector setup. Its easiest to do the turbo first and then the 8 injector. Do it all at once and you will be tearing out your hair trying to figure out why things aren't running right. Also remember that a S-FMU is not necessary with 8 injectors (you only need a 1:1 reg). I'd probably start with a smaller turbo too. Maybe a used one. I don't think there's much point in running a 25G on a stock engine. I wouldn't get an electric fuel gauge either. You can buy a mechanical one for $20 and run it up next to the windsheild (save $210). Once you have a good fuel system, fuel pressure should be dependable enough that you don't need to monitor it.

Ok, so maybe i should put a list together of the Minimum to boost 5-6 psi safely on a stock motor. That would probably be a lot less expensive.... But like i said, i was bored and was trying to think up as Complete of a list as i could....

You could easily simplify your systems and well as use cheaper new parts. few examples:

$1099 Mitsu 25G turbo. what are you trying to do? Brand new T3/T4B standard bearing turbo can be had for $450-500 as well as a standard 16G. Why a $1099 turbo on a $250 manifold.

Extra injector controller. Screw that. If your going to make power to utilize a 25G do it right with larger injectors and AFC or DFI. Walk it before you run it. Start with a $150 FMU/$300SFMU to get it running right with that, call it a day and step up after your running good with a basic set up. Doing it all at once is a bad move IMO.

Head studs scrap that. If your head gasket isn't causing trouble dont touch it! If it blows then get studs.

Use a stock exh manifold gasket for $17 at the dealer. They are great, much better than the neon oe gasket.

Find a place that sells those gauges a little cheaper. You could save at least $75 right there with the same part #s.

Theres also oil return line, oil return fitting, oil sender T, downpipe flange to make the downpipe from, U bends, clamps and couplers out the ass to connect the intercooler, misc (vacuum and fuel hose, small fuel line clamps, teflon, oil pan gasket sealer ect),dont see a wastegate, personally wouldn't use that big of a turbo with an internal wastegate, injector and injector boss for that set up if you intend to use it.

5-6 psi do it like me.

14b turbo, alains manifold, 5psi wg (depending on if the 14b is 7psi ill just use that and hope), stock 1g smic, sfmu, stock injectors, supra fuel pump, hks bov, elec fp gauge-boost-oil-a/f-egt cost me like $150 total, custom dp and ic piping, ss oil lines, 95 fuel rail, missing link fcd, and thats about it. $1300 estimated.

Hopefully being an AT I can build 3-7psi off the line. It should go nice. Can't wait.

Umm, I would take the extra injector controller over either of those systems any day of the week. Especially the afc. If you want to know why, read this thread: http://forums.2gnt.com/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=read_count&om=5193&forum=DCForumID16

An exrta injector(s) is a bandaid set up just like the AFC or piggy back DFI. Plumping an injector into the intake pipe is just as crude as a wet nitrous system, you have no control over its distribution. The only way to do it with accuracy is to plumb four injectors into the intake manifold at which point it gets pretty complicated and expensive as well. At least with an AFC and DFI the injectors are in the right place however inaccurate they may be. The solution for that is to simply over fuel a little. The positive pressure from the turbo helps distribute the fuel better than an additional injector on a normally aspirated set up but its far from perfection. Like everything else there are people/shops that think AIC are fine and others who think it can never take the place of larger injectors where they are suppose to be.

I was thinking the same also
either spend on an equal length manifold for that monster turbo or save yourself some big cash and go with a turbonetic or a nice T3 rebuilt like 420aVenger has

Yeah I wish I would have gone T3. I can sell my setup and get a different next fall anyway.

Alain, did you get the rest of my money? Let me know when to expect it.

Hey Stan, not trying to be rude or anything, but you don't seem to know how people are using the 8 injector setup. The way Corbin did it (and most are following his lead) is to use the 4 extra injectors in the manifold right where they should be. I agree, the setups that mount one or two extra ones in the charge pipe are quite crude. The 034 EIC seems to be a VERY good unit. It is tuned with a lap top. You have control of way more parameters than an AFC, plus you aren't fucking with the map signal so the computer doesn't make any fatal mistakes. A few people are using it now and it can supply as much fuel as accurately as anything else. There was a post a month or so ago where someone ran like 22 psi with it. I don't think I would try to do that with an AFC. Have you been to Corbin's page yet? If you haven't, you should go take a look. He has a really good explanation of how everything is used. I think it is a really good alternative for the DFI for less money. I am in the process of rounding the parts up for this setup as we speak.

I agree that adding 2 injectors is definately a crude way of going about it, but here is what I am talking about. This is a pic of my setup with the 034 EIC.

The four injector method shown is great ( I even said that in my response thats the way to do it right) but I didn't assume he indended to use a four additional injector set up with just AIC listed in his parts list. Maybe the part # of the AIC was suppose to give me a hint but it didn't :-) .

PS: please dont start any response "dont mean to be rude..." I'm not your daddy, know-it-all or some form of authority just another member here shooting the breeze. I can still learn some shit too.

If I ever try to go against Stan, Murix, Breezio and all of those other smart people..

I type in something, hit the "Post Message" button, and run to the corner..

Yeah you do know everything, and can't learn anything more :P

BTW.. to Evulflea..
How'd you get all that for $150? Are you serious? You got the turbo, manifold, AFC and all those other things for $150?.. From who, where? I'm in line :D ..

E-mail me.. ab1949@wayne.edu ..

$150 for gauges about $1300 total for my turbo kit.

Actually no I have a front mount and price is now about $1350 total since I changed setups again.
