32706, Engine rebuild done in 14hrs! (sort of a rebuild)

Well I am completly done. The whole thing took me like 14hrs to complete by myself. This included a couple of trips to the hardware store for some nuts and bolt I wanted to replace.
So far nothing wrong with her. I have drove it for about an hr, ossolaing my speed, and gear. No smoke, no oil leaks, no vacum leaks. All look good!

I replaced 3 pistons, the head gasket, a couple dozen bolts with grade 8.8's. And of course the usual gaskets. So this is by no means a FULL rebuild. Kinda a, "get me on the road till I have enough money to by set of forged internals" rebuild.

I imagine that with a full rebuild I would take about 18hs to complete.

Congrats your greasiness. How much did the job cost for community information?

4 used pistons, in good shape, 50 shipped and 48 for the head gasket, and like 8 dollars for the exhaust gasket, a gallon of oil, one oil filter, and I reused my anitfreeze. I did also replace a bunch of crappy bolts with grade 8.8 SS ones.

Got a write-up on how to go in disassembling to get to the piston? Did you removed the whole engine? also, did you get to the rod? Thanks, good job!!!

Well to make a step by step writup will be very involved. I'd say if you can do a timing belt, then you most def can do a piston/rod replacement. It takes time, and some mechanical skill. A helper is very good too. Here is a simple, what needs to be done list:

REMOVE THE FOLLOWING:

Power steering pump
Drain coolant, remove radiator and hoses
Loosen alternator and remove that belt and the power steering/ac belt
Crank pulley
Pass motor mount
Motor mount plate
Timing belt front cover and then timng belt and its componets
Timing belt back cover
Cam gears
Valvecover
Camshaft bearing caps them the camshafts
Oil pan
Bottom crossmember
Downpipe
Pull off all electrical connectors and vacum lines
Fuel lines to fuel rail
Intake manifold-to-block support braces (2) in back of block
Pull cylinder head bolts and remove head (we left intake mani, and
exaust mani on head, and also the turbo)
With the oilpan off, and the Head, loosen each connecting rod cap
bolts, and push out piston/rod assembly.

To reinstall new pistons or rings, you need to Hone the cylinders
with a hone, to re-crosshatch the walls. Its a MUST
To reinstall pistons, you need to get a ring compressor to compress
rings, and then tap the piston into place in the cylinder, then reconncect the rod bearing caps, torqure down to factory specs. Put it all back together :)
