There are three wires on the rheostat. A green with a white stripe, a black with a yellow stripe, and a black wire. Can anyone tell me which out of the three is the actual power wire that I can use to power my guages?

The HRC manual says to connect it to the green wire and the black with the white stripe. Not sure if that means one is for power and one is ground.

Green w/ white is power -- the other 2 wires are both grounds.

Thanks man. I just wanted to verify that is how everyone hooked it up. I used a voltmeter to probe which one was power. I had some wierd results.

The green with the white stripe always received 12 volts when the parking and headlights were turned on.

The solid black wire was always ground.

The black wire with the yellow stripe would increase in voltage when the lights where dimmed using the rheostat. I thought that was strage. In my mind, the voltages would increase when the lights on the dash got brighter.


As a result, I used the green with the white stripe.

so you got your power from your parking/headlight switch?

Which wire under the steering column is the ignition on power wire?! I bought my car with autostart and I've got so many wires under there I can't eat pasta now :P

I can't find the damn thing! I found a wire and tested it. power with ignition set to "on" position, No power when in the "off" position.

Now after finishing up-The gauge only works when "cranking the motor" and when the car is put in gear (drive or revers) WTF!

Get the power for your gauges from your cigar lighter. Easiest wire by far. I think it's just a sold blue. Also if you blow a fuse you know where to go to.

I just finished the install yesterday. Here is the way I installed the gauges (this is just one of the three gauges, I also did EGT and Boost guage). Keep in mind that I am using the Lunar Series which is backlit. All gauges worked correctly.

Four Wires off of the Air/Fuel Gauge:

White (backlight wire)
Black (ground)
Violet (signal wire)
Red (switched power)

White Wire (backlight):
The white wire I hooked to the green wire with a white stripe on the rheostat (dimmer for dash gauges - tach, fuel, speedometer, temperature) - not the easiest to get to. Here is how I got to these wires - I took the bottom of the dash off and then unscrewed the two screws holding in the rheostat. I then unclipped the connector from the rheostat, removed the rheostat, and then passed the rheostat wires through the hole on the dash where the rheostat was to make necessary connections without being under the dash.

Red Wire (switched power):
The red wire I connected to the blue wire coming off of the cigarette lighter - if I remember correctly (I know it has a white clip to the cigarette lighter). I also probed the wire with the ignition turned to the on postition so I know it is 12 volts.

Black wire (ground):
Black is ground. Ground appropriately.

Violet wire (signal from 02 sensor):
Violet is hooked up to wire number 31 (black with a white stripe) on the upper connector of the ECU.

I have a 96 Eclipse GS so your wires are exactly the same colors. Also my information is based off of the Wiring diagrams in the Mitsubishi motors electrial diagrams.

If I use the 12V off the cigarette light then the gauge would only work when I have the parking/headlights on.

I've got three wires coming off the ignition switch.

black/red-what I used

blue-?

White-?

Anyone know which one of the two to use?

Once the ignition is turned on, there is constant power going to the cigarette lighter. It is a switched wire. As soon as the ignition is turned to the "on" position, the blue wire running to the cigarette lighter has 12V. I know this for a fact as I have used a voltmeter to probe. If you hook up the wires the way I mentioned above, you will not have a problem. All gauges that I have (boost, egt, and a/f) are working properly - both receiving power to run the gauge and to back light it - with the above setup in my previous post.

ya thats right. but ill give you a pointer. for the back lights, just tap the green wire(i think) that goes to the cigarette lighter's light. thats what i did and it works great. i had my gauges tapped into the cig lighter, but i have a bunch of accessories coming out of there too, i didnt like drawing all that power from one place(a/f gauge acted weird). i ran a wire from the black wire with a white stripe from the upper ecu harness, then tapped all 4 of my gauges off of that line. and yes, the o2 sensor is the white wire with the black stripe. i have a 99 also

solder is best

yea soltering and heat shrink are always the best, then crimp connectors, but i wouldn't use scotchlock connectors, i dont think they're very reliable

or be a redneck like me and just strip it down, twist it together tight and either put a cap on it, or good ole electrical tape

haha i love the twist caps! i use them everywhere... havent had a connection fail yet tho
