I have a 99 GS with a CEL light on. Datalogger says it's code P1494 - Evap emissions Ventilation Solenoid switch or mechanical fault. Mits dealer is an a$$, Chrysler dealer says they can't even pull the codes from my 99. Problem is, there is no Vent solenoid listed, the part is actually called a Fuel leak detect pump. This appears to be the same type of problem caused by a loose gas cap, but I'm leery of buying an $80 part that doesn't even have the right name. My car WILL NOT do the key/decode thing, so all I have to go on is what Prof. Chilton has to say. Has anyone else run across this problem? To make matters worse, the code is making the car lean and in limp mode until about 3500 rpm. Not ideal seeing as how I'm supposed to be installing my turbo kit this weekend. Any ideas? Anyone? TIA

the solenoid on the 2.0 DOHC motors for the EVAP system is called a Proportional Purge Solenoid. the solenoid regulates the rate of fuel vapors from the EVAP canister and gas tank to the intake manifold. the solenoid is controlled by an engine controller circuit.

(the evap system is how our cars deal with fuel vapors from the gas tank. instead of venting to the atmosphere, it vents inbto the EVAP system. evap system then flows those vapors back into the intake charge to be burned off)

on my car, the evap canister is behind the front fascia on the pssenger side. i remember readin in the chiltons that in 98 the system was moved to the gas tank, but i dont know if that was for us, or the cloud cars (the avenger chiltons and the cloud car chiltons are one in the same). now that i think about it, it was for the cloud cars, casue i know 98+ avengers still have it up front, sorry, ignore most of this paragraph, lol

The purge solenoid has a different code #, and I've never gotten that one. The purge solenoid is up front on my car, but everything else is back by the gas tank.

p1494 could also be the leak detection pump pressure switch. i couldnt find another code just for the purge solenoid, and i thought the purge solenoid was the only solenoid in the evap system. o, the code is for the solenoid switch, not the solenoid itself, right?

so, istn the ecm pointing at one of those two switches as the problem?

Definietly keep me updated Tia. I've had my own problems dealing with a similar Evap Sensor Error. It of course says I have a leak and for the life of me, I can't find a damn thing. I've about changed every damn fuel line in my car.

I WISH I could find what the problem is. Although my car doesn't go into limp mode or anything it's still annoying as hell.

I don't know whether it's the actual soleoid that's giving me incorrect signals or I do in fact have some sort of vapor leak somewhere. I run my car every day and don't smell any fuel or anything. :-( This is definitely my only irritant with my car right now, but I'm really bothered by it. Car runs wonderful but I got this stupid error.

On another note, my canister is located the same place as yours Ryan. I'm considering listing this in a separate thread to hopefully get more attention to it.

The Chiltons description for a p1494 is: Evaporative Emmission Ventilation Solenoid switch or mechanical fault. I need to know what the hell that is because satan doesn't have a part with that name. :o How would I test either of them? (the purge sol. or the leak detect)
