How low could your compression be with just bad piston rings? I'm having massive blow-by and tons of blue smoke but only when I get on it. Compression hendered 1-4...180-180-60-180. Could that just be the rings or something else as well?? The car runs just find except for the fact that i'm smoking (blue) and the excessive blow-by.

Sounds like a bad ring to me, or possibly a broken piston land.

yep sounds like rings but could also be a bad/bent valve but its prob not. that is typical blown 3rd cyl ring, sorry :(

So the rings could cause compression to be that low? Good, that's what I thought. Ordered rings earlier, they should be installed on Monday.

it's never the rings on a turbocharged car. Rings don't fail. You broke a piston.

Rings to fail. Haven't you ever seen a turbocharged (stock) vechicle smoke. Rings...Please don't say rings CAN'T fail. I'm not saying your not right in this instance but they do wear and tear.

I think he meant on our cars. I've never seen anyone on here that had the rings fail. They always break the ring landings on the pistons.

Ya Dino is right, you broke a piston. Although I have seen one instance where a guy on the NEON board did have blow rings, Although that cost him a completely new engine, cause the rings dragged along the cyl walls. Not good in either case. Good news is that you can fix it for minimal cost. Lots of people on this board have xtra pistons laying around.

Cracked piston ring landing. ENOUGH SAID

dude......your #3 "piston" is "dead". time to buy some new pistons and sone new rings, and probably some new bearings. A.D.P. "...If you do too much, people become dependant. If you do to little, people loose hope. If you do it right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all." bring it on............

Already ordering piston rings. They will be here tomorrow. Once I get the pistons out i'll check um out. If #3 is gone then i'm sending back the rings and getting re-build kit. Might as well while the engine is apart. Also, rings+pistons are like $600. Might as well throw another $400 on that and get everything. I will be selling this engine after all this is done to it also. I have my heart set on the 2.2L stroker that Howell has. I'll let everyone know how things go tomorrow.

wow I guess I'm fortunate I got consistent compression and no smoke and no oil :P Did you do a wet test? Too bad 180 is still pretty good, why does it only have to be one cylinder :(

Unfortunately, Dino was right. Piston #3 is gone. Oh well, I guess it's time for a rebuild. Luckily, i'm leaving for Canada tomorrow and will be gone for a week so I don't have to be stuck without a car while I wait for rebuild kit.
