32047, how many Californians are boosting??? Posted by LunarEclipse, Sep-30-02 06:19 PM
I ask because I am starting to doubt throwing a turbo on my 420a. I haven't checked up on HadesOmega, but I think he is up in northern cali and couldn't pass smog the last time I heard. Just wanted to know more or less how you guys in cali are going to smog your turbo 420a's. It just seem like its going to be as easy to have a turbo like the rest of the people on this board who are not plagued with the legalities that we californias have to deal with. My plans which are coming up real soon, were to pay off the balance on my NER kit, stage 1F, rebuild possibly with forged stock compression pistons or 8.5 whatever I decide, and leave it like that so when smog time comes it will be not that hard to remove and replace stock shit to pass. that is just sounding like too much of a hassle.
An alternate plan which has always been in the back of my head, is to sell and buy a gst or wait for a gsx to come around and fix that up. In Cali, with all its rules and shit, this route seems a little more convenient, but with the good, comes the bad, higher insurance rates and missing the first and most favorite car I ever bought myself. Help me out guys. Where are the hookups for smog? You guys that are in texas and florida and back east have it good, you don't even know.

I hear you bro. I'm right between Sacramento and San Francisco. I'm throwing a check engine light just because I have a slow o2 sensor. So I already failed my smog test. There is a way around things if the guy smogging doesn't know better. What you have to do is replace your turbo with a turbo that has a carb # on it. You'de have to buy it seperate. Most GReddy, APEXi, and HKS turbo's have em. Then all you gotta do is pass out the tail pipe with legit o2 sensors and your good. There is a catch though. If you have a blow off valve, FORGET IT. When you run your turbo make sure you get yourself a backup pipe to run from your intercooler to your intake manifold. You can get that fabricated at any muffler shop with 2.25 inch galvanized piping. But make sure you paint it to match the rest of the piping. Just so he won't get wise.
I know this because a friend of mine has a Civic SI with the GReddy 50 state legal turbo kit. I was with him when he got it smogged. They told him straight up, "If you run a blow off valve or add an intercooler I'de fail you on the spot." He said, "As long as I see that carb # and your #'s are good out the tail pipe there's no problem."
Unfortunately the state of California is taking over the smog restrictions in 2 years anyway thanks to them passing proposition 40. After that happens you'de have a hard time passing smog if your running stock.
I'm moving out to Virginia in 2 weeks. WOOO HOOO. I can rest easy.

hey brain, alot of people in ca have turbo kits on there cars.. i can think of 6 people of the top of my head... if you get a gst and want to pass smog dont even mod it! either way your nothing going to pass all the 'checks' in ca smog... visual on any car 420a or 4g63 motor 'upgraded' will not pass you for visual.. i know we can pass smog on the machine as long as our car is within specs... if u rebuild let me know im thinking about rebuilding one day...

Boost is good. Just take it off every 2 years, no big deal.

but that is what I'm talking about. What ARE the ways around it? If you got some hookups somewhere share the wealth. I see turbo si's, turbo civic hatchbacks all with front mount intercoolers, where do these guys go? If I have to pay more money or slip some 20's here and there, so be it, but I am not going to be wandering around looking like a dick trying to bribe everyone. I know there are some turbo 420a's in southern cali not to mention up north, but that is not the case. I'm not going to be building up my car little by little to take it all apart every other year. And finding a gst/gsx and start modding from there would be a little easier to hide, plus there are more modified 4g63's in cali than there are 420a's, so my thought is they are getting their cars smogged somewhere. Hell if I know where though

It's alot easier to pass smog with a gst/gsx than turboed 420a. I know alot of peeps with upgraded turbo on thier gst/gsx that pass smog with no problem.

randy are you located in ca? if not we have visual also, so either way you are screwed! ... hiding it more in a 4g63 motor is only hiding the turbo, nothing else... really if u want the gst/x go ahead but either way when it comes time to smog you will piss in your pants. you can ask the so cal dsm list, most of the 4g63 people know of smog places that know of smog places which 'know' our car is stock with a 'turbo'..:D.. Well I am right here in Orange County, and had to explain a little to the smog guy what things were doing in there.... He got to the point where if the major things such as PCV valve, the other vent in the valve cover going back to intake (blow-by), and you didn't have a cone style air filter on..... He would just hook me up to the machine and run me.... I passed the sniff test and all was good.
What i did do to make it visually pleasing to the inspector was: Take that catch can off. makeshift run that hose back to the intake. Took my stock air box, and put that and the filter back in its location, then ran some acordian hose from the box to the turbo. Made sure my timing wasn't off, changed my plugs and wires. Then drove it over to the inspection station..... he ran it, and i paid him for the inspection and cert.
hope that helps... i took some pictures of what my engine bay looked like with the airbox back on there if you want a good laugh i will post it tonite when i get off of work.

I've got a boosted '99 and haven't come up to smog time yet. Not sure what the hell I'm gonna do. So basically, I'd be interested in ways to get smogged also. It's coming up next year :-(

chamuko, where did you get yours smogged, youre right around the corner from me, just like marcus(eclipse804) said, just go down one of the streets where he's at and pay someone off, but i don't want to look like an ass going around trying to bribe. and let me see these pics of stock airbox with a star kit, that should be good stuff
