31881, How to retard ignition? or.... What should I need for 15+ pounds of boost?
Posted by HiOnPSI, Sep-26-02 02:12 PM
I ordered my 14" drag radials today, and they're already on their way, woohoo. I'm going out to the track next weekend and I really want to push 15psi, but want to make sure beforehand that I won't screw anyhing up with the mods i have listed. I've heard a lot of people say to retard timing, but i really haven't learned enough to know what does that. Who wants to help? :) BTW, i need to adjust my fuel pressure on the Cartech FPR this weekend before the race because for some reason i'm crossing the 900C mark on 4th gear pulls at 12psi-ish. Guess i need to richen up.

Dude, If yI remember the math 1600 F should be somewhere near the 700's C . Thats NOT good.

First of all no one here knows how to convert *C to *F :-) 900*C is 1652*F, and second to answer your question it depends on what your fuel setting are on the AFC if you have one. The AFC tends to advance timing with bigger injectors because the map sensor signal is altered which shows less load on the the engine which advances timing. Your gonna have to datalog to find out. I've always shot for around 19 degree's of total timing. So for say you have 25 degree's across the board....well then you need to retard 6 degree's of timing ;-) Good luck!

Haha, what the hell conversion are you guys doing. I've done i ta few times and 900C is like..1620 or something like that. mentioned above.

And yes i have a 1G SMIC. Tonight my car was feeling great, i just got home. I was pushing BARELY over 900C at 115mph in 4th gear with 12psi, but it seemed to breach 880 at the top of 3rd. I have done no tuning to my car whatsoever, this weekend i plan on tuning my FPR, and, i was told by the Hahn tech to try to get 90PSI at 12 pounds of boost, that should put me eligible for 15psi, but if i STILL can't get my EGTs to go down, i don't know what the hell to do next!

for some reason I have the same problem as you .I think the 30lb injectors are only good for 13lbs and thatz cutting it close. I'm pushing 95psi of fuel at 13lbs with those 30lb injectors. 1st gear and second gear no problems the end of third gear it get really really gets close to 1600 on my autometer gauge. I'm just waiting for a Response from some of the guys on this board about running 40 or 50lb injectors with no SAFC. Ive taken my car to 15lbs on 30lb injectors and I'm not gonna take that chance again. sucks alota gas huh with no SAFC. I'm gonna hook my water injection back up and see if my egt tempts drop. so watz considered perfect egt? 1530 0r 1500()

I thought it was 1600.

You'll never feel more power then right before the point at which the pistons start to melt. :7

LOL...That is very true. For the 2 weeks my car ws running at 15 psi I was beating just about anything out there. I beat a neew mustang GT on the bottle with many mods. But then the pistons melted. I would run over 12-13 psi with out timing retard. Maybe you can do it on some race gas but dont do it on pump gas. TRUST ME!!!!

people say 1550 on the egt.. 1600 is max.. anything over not really making any power.

Isn't the formula

f=9/5c + 32 ?

or

c=5/9f - 32 ?

Don't make me look it up....

To convert a Fahrenheit temperature into Celsius:

Tc = (5/9)*(Tf-32)

For example, to convert a Fahrenheit temperature of 98.6 degrees into degrees Celsius first subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature to get 66.6. Then you multiply 66.6 by five-ninths to get 37 degrees Celsius.

To convert a Celsius temperature into degrees Fahrenheit:

Tf = ((9/5)*Tc)+32

For example, to convert a Celsius temperature of 100 degrees into degrees Fahrenheit, first multiply the Celsius temperature reading by nine-fifths to get 180. Then add 32 to 180 and get 212 degrees Fahrenheit.

yes this would make 900c= 1652f , but when worked from f to c its 871c. which one you wanna use as a safe point... is up to you or maybe im ust tired.

Preliminary dyno results of Marks car withthe 440's, stock ecu, missing link, and s-fmu were 268fwhp at 13psi with a 15psi spike. Leanest spot was 12.0:1 at around 4500rpm with the rest being in the 11.x:1 and lower a/f area. the AFC will go in to smoothen it out and make more power, but the car is and has been driveable like this.

My car at 18psi with the 50lb/hr injectors was kicking ass. Felt good but also definitely rich. Relevant mods are 50lb/hr injectors, stock ecu, no fcd of any type, 1:1 regulator. Obvious rich spot in low load situations between 3500-4500 where it would like to bog. When in boost it is nonexistant and pulls damn hard. Discovered my low timing (13deg vs marks 18deg) was due to loose knock sensor. Car kicks ass with more timing and still ran fine, but as it is with Mark's the e-manage will go in for more fine tuning.

This is going to unfortunately have to wait. My glorious luck is that my car will discover a way to fail. After having my engine built since 99 and no major failures and only niggling problems along the way, the oil pump has decided to go. :( This is totally unrelated and has more to do with the mileage (almost 100k on a 97!) Was running excellent up to this point short of the mentioned low load bogging issue. My bearings are scarred due to oil starvation and who knows what else. The engine is coming out for inspection. This means the car is now down. Probably means new cams and a few other things for me.

To stay on topic, knowing your actual timing will let you know what you can get away with. Try for 18-21deg.

Ok, well this bitch is ready to go above and beyond 15psi. What's the cheapest way to datalog our cars...is it that obd2 website with that laptop thing, is there a cheaper way?
