30775, got questions about hrc stage 2---- kinda long, many ques. Posted by jsupetran, Sep-09-02 07:18 AM
i am just waiting for the kit to arrive but i have a few more questions.
i'm taking a conservative approach and i know stage 2 could go 9 psi, but is there a way to set boost at only 5 psi (i have all stock motor)?
is it okay to run 9 psi on a stock motor?
as far as building my engine, if i consistently boost at 9psi, will my auto tranny handle it cause i heard that 5 speed is the way to go if you mod your car?
finally, my payments for my kit will be fully paid by september, so keeping in mind that my only mod for my are car is the hrc turbo kit, what should i do for mods in terms of keeping the car healthy and its life time about four years? is it better to change the cheap fuel regulator that comes with the kit, a boost controller, s-afc, gauges for temp, egt, ect...
thanks, i'm going through the achives to learn more and more, but i want to learn more so dump your information like i'm a trash can of turbo knowledge.

You can only run 5psi at first, that is what the wastegate is set at. If you want to turn it up any, you must buy a boost controller.
> >is it okay to run 9 psi on a stock motor? >
9psi on stock internals is skating on thin ice...I would keep it around 6 or 7 max....maybe even just 5 depending on the mileage and such.
>as far as building my engine, if i consistently boost at >9psi, will my auto tranny handle it
Your auto tranny should handle it just fine, however I would consider buying an automatic transmission cooler to keep temps down, and an auto tranny temp gauge to monitor the temp.
>> > cause i heard that 5 speed is the way to go if you mod your car? >
That is a very debatable topic. Stock for stock, 5-speed is a ful second faster than an automatic, thus if your car were a 5-speed it would end up being faster....however there are advantages of having a turbo automatic. You can build boost at the line by brake-torquing, and you can hold boost between gears...but in my opinion those factors don't make up for a 5-speed tranny.

Switch out the Cartech FMU (which comes with the kit) for a Vortech S-FMU fuel pressure regulator. If you want more than 5 psi, you'll need a boost controller. You'll need gauges for your auto tranny temp, and an EGT gauge. You also might wanna think about getting larger injectors and an S-AFC to manage them.

I second everything ryan said, he's hit it right on the mark

I would like to add couple things to consider.
1. I would look into getting the missing link to replace HRC's fuel cut defenser if you have a 1996-1999 car.
2. If you want to run 9 psi, here is what I would do. Take Ryan's advise and go get the Vortech SFMU, a set of accel 30 lb injectors, and a datalogger. If you have a laptop already, then you can buy the software and harness from www.obd2.com for $130 if I remember right. A datalogger is the absolute best tool I have ever bought for my car. Next to a dyno, its the best way to tune a car imo. XtremeRS just got done doing this and it has worked out extremely well for him, so if you want to read the thread, just search for it.
Running 9 psi on your car is safe as long as you tune it perfectly. I would not do it with stock injectors and I would not do it without a datalogger. As far as the internals are concerned, they have proven themselves to last at that boost level... again... as long as you tune it properly.
To start out though, I would get it set up using the HRC wastegate at 5 psi and read up more on our engine and what works and what doesn't. If you are not familiar with how turbo systems work, I would recommend Corky Bell's book titles "Maximum Boost" as many of the people on here would. You can run a search for it and probably find it for under 30 bux. Lastly, once you get your kit, if you are unsure about anything, the best thing you can do is to ask questions. Most of us guys are very cool people who are willing to help no matter how dumb the question may be (although you should search for the answer first). Its always better to look dumb on a forum than to blow up your motor because of a dumb mistake. Many people here are also available on AIM including myself to help answer any questions you have immediatly. Have fun!

If you are getting the stage 2 from HRC, then you cant go lower than 8 psi, its what the wastegate spring is set for. If you want to go lower, then you will need to get the 5 psi spring from Hahn. IF your motor is in good health, meaning good compression (180+) then you should have no problems boosting on the stock motor. I started out with around 200psi of compression before the turbo install, been boosting at 5 psi for a few months, then went to 8 psi with an intercooler. Did another comp test and got the same comp numbers. I'm at 9-10 psi now, and its running very strong. 10 PSI should be the safe max limit, but it is pushing it, but the stock motor can take it. ITS VERY IMPORTANT that you are properly tuned with the fuel system when boosting. Running too lean will blow your motor no doubt. YOu can do this on even 2 psi. TUNING is the KEY!! We have very strong stock motors, and if in good condition to start with, with proper tuning, it should not be a big issue. Def get an EGT, and Air/fuel gauge to know how your motor is responding to boost. These are essential to a happy, long lived boosted motor, built or stock.

so when my kit arrives and it is installed, i will be running around 8psi, but ryan said something like 5 psi would be where i'd be out of the box until i get a boost controller? if i want to go 5 psi, then i should buy a 5psi waste gate from hahn then? am i getting this right here.

Out of the box Stage 2 HRC kit will run around 8 psi with a side mount Inter cooler. IF you want lower boost, you will NEED the lower wastegate spring, the 5 psi one. BUT if you use that spring with the side mount intercooler, you will see around 4 psi because of pressure drop from the intercooler.

if your turbo kit has not left hrc yet ask them to send you the stage 1 wastegate which is 5psi i believe and use a boost controller to up the boost more.. if not then your stuck with the 9psi actulator .. get rid of the hrc mapper, fpr, and you should be cool.. replace them with the missing link, and vortex- sfmu... oh yah im auto also, maybe later i will do a 5 speed swap if money allows me to.. but i mostly do 9psi now with #30 injecs tuned a bit.. the auto tranny is holding up pretty well.. if you doubt me eric c ( star stage 2 before ) boosted up to 15psi stock internals, and auto tranny.. he just had a ignition to retard timing etc.. cool
Michael 99gs HRC Stage 2 Stage 3 process begins anyone got a 420a block thats not spun etc?

You will also want to get a nice cat-back exhaust. If you keep the stock piping on the car, you will see less boost and the car will have greater lag. You will see a big gain in a nice exhaust system with your turbo kit. Thats about it....everyone summed everything else up for ya :)
