30582, Emissions Question - Vortech SFMU and HRC Stage 2 Turbo

What's up,

I know many of you are lucky enough to live in an area where there is no emissions testing. Unfortunately, I live in New Jersey and they do conduct testing. From what I have read about turbos, they actually improve some aspects of emissions. I am considering buying a Stage 2 kit from HRC and upgrading the FPR to a Vortech SFMU. My question is this. If I set the idle fuel pressure to the recommended Mitsubishi motors idle (47 to 52 psi), the car should not run any different correct? The SFMU compensates fuel pressure only under boost. Has any ever passed emissions with a turbo kit installed?

Is there anything I can do to pass testing? (such as running the garanteed to pass fuel additives etc.) I already take my car to a mechanic to pass inspection because of other non-engine related mods but I am unsure how he would handle emission.

Thanks for the help,
Kurt

You will pass, in Illinois they have just changed emissions testing so all they do is check your ECU for CEL codes, if you have none they send you on your way and stamp you passed, all you have to do is just clear codes right before you drive in and your all set.

But with the turbo reguardless can actually improve emissions

Dude, what part of IL you from?!

I'm from the north west burbs of Chi-town and they threw my car on a dyno!

Someone actually gets in your car and puts it on two rollers to test emissions with the vehicle under load with sniffer on the exhaust along with OBDII plug in.

Too bad for both of you(in regards to emissions testing). They do neither of that stuff down in Springfield.

Now that I'm in Northern VA, I have to do emissions testing. They strap your car to a dyno and test the exhaust contents. They also check to see if your emissions equipment is hooked up. As long as your cat converter is working and your fuel system is tuned ok, you will pass with no problems. Turbos are very bad for cold-start emissions. They suck up the heat needed to get the cat converter up to operating temperature. I believe that they have little effect once the car is warm (maybe even better).

NW burbs here (Vernon Hills), got the testing done in linconshire, depending on when you got the testing done, they are in the process of phasing out the dyno testing and going to only CEL checking everywhere in Illinois.
thats you too jason

I am from South River, NJ (next town over is Sayreville and East Bruswick).

I am unsure how mechanics here check as I haven't had the need to now. Some may put it on the dyno and others may just do an idle check. Not sure.

When I lived in Bartlett,IL i went to Streamwood and they also put my car on the dyno. I now don't have emissions testing in St. Charles :)
