30427, Stupid question from a stupid guy. Posted by a_miller_76, Sep-03-02 06:04 AM
Okay, I know that I can buy a turbo kit from HRC or Star.....not a dumbass...I wondered though if I could get a turbo from a GST/GSX with the o2 housing and downpipe and build my own turbo kit? I know I'll need the full downpipe, collector manifold, and all the lines, fittings, piping, innercooler, all that stuf....just one simple question.
Is piecing it together myself a waste of time? It would be cheaper for me in the long run.

most people will say to just buy a kit. if you do your research and you know what you are doing, you might be able to save a good amount of money. i say buy a kit, but if u really want....do a search on the forums for "custom turbo kit", lots of people have done it on this board.

Simple answer: NO. You could use the Mits turbo but that's about it. The DP and everything else won't fit.

hey bro, just go to "things weve seen before" forum and find "everything custom turbo" or somethin like that. it hsould be just a few topics down the list. and then spend a while going through the archives. the search function doesnt work on the archives so dont waste your time trying that, just sit there and click through page by page by page by page. and if you want to speed things up and give your eyes a break here's a tip. each time a new archive page loads up, in your internet explorer click "edit" then click "find" and then type in "custom" and click enter. if there are any topics on that page with the word custom in it, it will find them immediately, and if there are non, then just click cancel because if you click find again on the next page, the word "custom" will already be in the box and you wont have to type it out again and again. but if you just click the x in the corner instead of cancel, you will have to keep typing custom in the box every time when you move on to the next archived page of topics. good luck.

yes, piecing it together is a waste of time, and you will have a much more professional, better looking, more reliable system if you buy a kit pre-made for your car.

Here is how I look at it. If you can really read up on turbos, and know what EXACTLY you will need for everything to work, it will be somewhat cheaper to put a custom kit together. For our cars, it actually is fairly simple to do, just getting all the parts rounded up is the hard part. If you do a turbo such as the S16G or the T3/T4 hybrid, then you will already have LOTS of useful info on this forum to get the job done. If you think you understand the working of full turbo system, then I'd say go for a custom set up, you can save money, but shopping around and finding deals is where its at. If you dont want to mess with all that, and all the time needed, go with a kit, it will be easier to install, and possibly some tech support, for what that is worth, I've never needed it, I have this board for that! So dont let tech support be a deciding factor to go with a kit. Custom kits will have its own headaches to deal with, but its all how you look at it. I learned sooo much from doing my turbo install, and just reading up on here, that I could easily go and find all the parts i would need to do a custom set up on one of theese cars. Hell, i have replaced damn near most items that came in my kit with better stuff. Thats another thing, esp in the Hahn kit, there are a few things that need some attention, and may cause some issues later down the road, as I and others have found out, but we are always here to help out. And as for putting a GSX or stock eclipse/talon turbo on our cars, yes, its possible, R&R on here has that T-25 custom set up on his car, and may have some info for you on that. IMO, that turbo is a tad small, but its almost instant spool up is killer. The choice is up to you...
Premade kit= more money, less headaches Custom kit= less money, but not much, more headaches

The hardest thing I did before doing the turbo was taking off the valve cover. It's not really THAT hard. Some say it's a waste of time. If I would have bought a HRC kit and have all of the extras I do then I'd have at least $3500 into it. I spent $2300. So to me the little extra work and headache was worth saving $1200. Then I saved $300 more dollars and then bought a built motor. So it's not always a waste of time if you do it right.

Here is my car, GSX turbo on it....I only spent about 1300 bucks so far. If I had the money I would have bought a HRC or STARR kit. BUT I am poor white trash.... and ExtremeRS is right, if your going to boost more than like 10 psi, then you should just get a S16G or at T3/T4. I don't know how well those other turbo's performe, cause I dont have a good reference(like a freind that has one that I can drive with), but here is an example of my car If I just gun it in 2nd gear, I hit 5 psi at about 2500 rpm. Lets say I am at 3000 rpm in first gear driving steady and I gun it..wham.....I can light up the tires like no problem. If I am in second the same scenario, it just throws you back into the seat..and whoosh your gone... Either route you take, you will love being turboed. Personally..if I were to do it again, I would do a custom turbo with the 14B. It will hold great boost and is readily avaliable for a reasonable price.
