3007, Ignition & Timing - Anyone messing with it?

Hey guys, I haven't noticed any talk about ignition or timing lately..
What's the word on Timing retard and Spark increase?
Anyone Using the Crane Fireball? Howabout the DIS-2?

Do we even need anything? I have heard that our stock ignition is
actually very good (Spark strength-wise) but I don't know if I
would need to retard timing or not.

My case is probably a bit rarer than most people, because I have
9.5:1 JE Pistons (+ fully rebuilt engine). I know that I won't be
able to get exotic on the psi; I am thinking MAX ever 18psi. And
that would have to be with a very well tuned car, including the
timing...

Why 9.5:1 ? Many reasons actually...
- I want to leave HARD off the line
- I want to run less boost for the same power (according to what - I have seen 10-11psi @ 9.6:1 is approx 15psi @ 8.8:1 )
- Just to be different...
- The MLS gasket is a tad thicker than the stock one, therefore it lowers compression anyway (by a tiny bit)
- I am getting the Turbo Crane cams, and I need more power lower down in the power band
- And finally, Its "too late" I finally got all my stuff and, well i don't ever want to have to wait that long for anything again...

Keep all your fingers crossed people!
Looks like it's all falling in place finally...
I might actually be *driving* my car soon!
Its only been 5 LONG months...

I'm actually glad that you are going with higher compression than what people normally. I would want to keep my compression near stock levels, since this would make us totally way different than our GST counterparts!

So you won't be able to run mad boost...but that means less turbo lag for the same power!

Does anyone see any consequences of running turbo with stock compression?

Not other than what Skrilla once said: Boost is more efficient that compression. So limiting the amount of boost you can run by having high comression will limit the amount of power you can produce both would be great when feasible). Of course there's the safety margin thing. I have 1 point higher compression than stock and even when I do put my non milled head on I'll still have 9.8 compression. I dont think I'll ever boost past the teens but dont think I'm not gonna see how high I can go with 10.6 (Adding an ignition is easier than changing a head). When I do it again though I'll have the engine built with stock compression.

3010, low end power high end power

Well I guess one has to decide what is more important: low end power or high end power..

high compression will give more low end power though, true?

3011, Yep and this is where you conider timing control...

That way you could run more boost with stock compression, BUT retarding timing reduces power.

so what is the best tradeoff?
When I rebuild my engine I don't want to end up with an engine with wimpy low end power (that I could probably get out and run faster.... :)

Thats the million dollar question and every expert has their own opinion. I sure as hell dont know so I'm just gonna work with what I'm working with.

3014, Stan got it...

It probably comes down to preference, but at 8:1 CR you can run the stock timing as aggresive as you want or not mess with it at all and run higher boost(severe loss of low end). Commonly timing is retarded to use "street" octane gas like 92. For me that's all that's available here in cali but for you guys in every other state they could have more powerful engines all the time with their 93 octane pumps.
