When i get my turbo kit can i set it for no boost on long trips?? Or should i just let it boost since it will be spinning anyway? I jus wanna know since i have family downsouth and friends that like road trips :D

hm...take off part of the intake pipe and put an air filter on it :)
then take some kind of wire mesh and put it over the intake turbine on the turbo, so nothing gets into it.
but remember, you aren't boosting until you step on it.

what ^^ said. or you can have a really small wg spring (mine's 3#). and w/a turbo you'll be weary of long road trips, trust me.

I was thinking about it as extending the turbo's lifespan a lil bit. We make frequent trips down south ( 500 miles each way ) and are now venturing out further, soon anyways :). But i guess the turbo wouldn't really be spooled up @ 3k so there wouldn't be much bost.Correct me if i am wrong, and thanks for the help:thumbsup

at 3k with my car, the a/c on the highway, i'm usually getting about 8-10 vacuum reading, and if i were to romp on it, in 5th gear (say, to pass) it takes quite awhile (10 seconds) to get into positive boost with the s16g. goin' down the highway at 3k rpm though? I'm usually somewhere around 3500-3750! Granny driver!!!!!

The car should be fine on long trips with the turbo set up as usual. As long as the car isn't getting enough throttle to create boost pressure, you'll cruise along with pressure in vacuum the whole time. The turbine wheel is going to spin anyway, so there's no way to really save mileage on it.

My friend drove his GS-T from Maryland to Colorado and had no problems.

last time i went to virginia i did between 60 and 80....only time i did more was too race some schmoe in a 1g :p. My insurance went down 120 per month cuz i have no tickets so i am more hten happy to drive like a granny so it goes down again :)

If you want 0 boost just disconnect the arm that regulates the wastegate flapper! you will get NO boost, just ask anyone here who has had that come off on them.

well mine stays in vacume till i step on it. Once i do however i reach 5psi in 2-3 sec if not less. Oh btw i have a star kit. I do take long trips 500mi + since i live in southern california and my girl is in northern california right now, so its pretty much every other week or sometimes one week after another. talk about gas money.. :(

Ehh, you're fine, i put 600+ miles a week on my car and i'm fine. Correct me if i'm wrong, but turbos ususally last around 100k. 700 dollars per 100,000 miles isn't that bad of an investment. And i'm taking that number as per the turbo eclipses, which push quite a bit more boost through them (12 stock). We're pushing 5-6 through a stage 1, should technically give you twice the life. But then non-intercooled turbos have higher EGTs which result in a lower manifold life expectency. Uhh, am i just rambling????? :)

driving long distances and having a turbo is not a problem
my family lives in houston and i go a college that is located an hour south of albany
this is my second time making the trip (1900miles) and i have not experienced any problems
naturally, i was careful to not boost...well maybe just once or twice...
...sometimes i just can't help myself

either way, the only thing that is of concern while being turbo-ed
is heat.
i was trying to be attentive to heat etc = gentle acceleration + opening the hood while filling gas + adequate cool down time + other neurotic habits

i have a star kit- so heat is a real problem...as the starter is located right underneath the exhaust housing
i have just had to get the thing rebuilt
for the longest time, my car was very moody about starting...i was eventually forced to hot wire the car everytime i wanted to go anywhere
...so heatshields etc are a very good idea

oh yeah...there was a post on this board a little while ago advertising heatshields for the t3/t4's- Turbo Technologies Inc
i think....
yeah- it's a 60 dollar "heat shield"....
no.

Dude you want 0 boost don't step on the pedal. You do know that the turbo is throttle activated right? It's not like a supercharger. When you wanna go fast just step on that sucka when you wanna just chill keep it in vacuum.

Heat eh well the best thing you can do to lower engine bay temps in my opinion is to get an intercooler. Hell I remember when I was stage one and I opened up my engine bay after a lap of autoxing woohoo man was it scorchin up in there. When I installed the intercooler cars engine bay was cooler than when it was NA.

One cool thing I saw Randy do was he installed a scoop right over the turbo I bet that worx pretty good.

Speaking of heatshields hehe...
