28086, got car running but....
Posted by optimuspeterson, Aug-03-02 07:38 AM
it runs like freakin shit. It wants to die whenever i hit the gas. It idels fine but i totataly have to feather the clutch and rev it to like 2k just so it doesn't stall.

Also it seems like i have to the the clutch all the way down to the ground for it to engage. is there some kind of adjustment because i don't think it is engadging all the way. I bled the lines but it has to be something else.

i only have one error code and that is my EGR so i'm no throwin any codes

any suggestions????

just did a compression test:
176 178 179 176

so those are good.

What's your fuel pressure set at? A very rich fuel setup will cause the car to feel very "sluggish." That's the only thing I can think of right now. Any other symptoms?

that was my first guess also but i can't really tell since i can't go into boost.

all i know is that when i'm giving it gas its about at 60 psi still in vaccum.

oh and i got the clutch thing figured out. bolt wasn't tight and i pretty much didn't have any clutch fluid.

i datalogged my car but i don't really know what i was looking for.

only thing i noticed is that my TPS sensor said it was at 15% at idle.

what should i look for when i datalog? i can't get the O2 part to work on it also.

here is a more detailed story of the problem.

It idles great but when i give it gas it just falls on its face. sometimes if i give it gas at idle it will just jump up 500 rpms an then sound like its going to die. Its the worst in second gear if i barely press on the gas (and i man barely) it will go but i give it a little more and it just feels like i'm letting of the gas totaly.

please help me guys, i really want to drive it but i can't go out on the streets but it is very unsafe right now. What are the conditions of a bad TPS sensor?

and is it normal to have to push the clutch pedal all the way down to the ground just for it to engauge?

thank you

check your afc. make sure the sensor is on pressure and make sure you are on 7 in 7 out or 6 in 6 out. i found that 7 in 7 out works better for me, but some people like 6. also are you using stock injectors? if not what size are you using?

TPS is normal at 15%. When you're datalogging, try and review your STFT and LTFT. See how the car is reacting to your O2 readings. Check your plugs and wires. Are the plugs overcarboned or lean?

Check your map sensor wiring? Do you have (or did you) have any osrt of FCD screwing things up?

Just think about what you've screwed with, and go over that stuff.

If the clutch is new, it'll feel deather light and will engage really low. After a few hundred driving miles, it will feel normal again.

i'm using stock injectors. i tried switching the settings arond on my safc and nothinc changed. i mean nothing. I would change everything and the car idled the same as it did before. I even changed it to 6 cyl and nothing changed. Is there something that i could do to make sure it is hooked up correctly?

i noticed that at idle when i give it gas and its falls on its face it goes super lean. I mean like down to .1xx and it even died once. I tried richening it up and nothing changed.

so what is my problem. and i'm a 95 so no fcd

Have you messed with the head at all, specifically the cam gears? Your timing could be bad which would cause this. You wont get accurate o2 readings when you arent operating under closed loop mode. Jason is right, you want to look at your long and short term fuel trims. You want them both to read as close to 0 as you can (especially short term). Good luck!

ok.... i haven't datalogged yet but this is what i have so far.

i soldered all of the connections for the s-afc and nothing changed. While i was reving it up it still did the same thing. go upto about 1500 and fall on its face so i turned the car off. I get out and notice that there is liquid on the ground under my exhaust. so i thought gas and went over and smelled it and it had no smell whats so ever. Could this be bad gas???? it has been sitting since march. but why would it only do this at lower rpms. at about 2500 it usually is fine?

and what pressure should i be seeing when choosing between the pressure settings? i was getting someting like 347 hg or something along those lines.

bad gas has a really nasty tarnished smell, so dont worry about that. As far as the bogging prob goes, when you step on the gas and it boggs it is either fuel or air related. mabye the car is loading up on fuel and its not able to burn sooo much damb much gas. when was the last time you changed your fuel filter? did you kink a fuel line while working under the hood or car? or leave a rag in the throttle body? (yes people do this and the result is extremely horrific) unless your lucky and its stuck on the throttle plate. any leaks in the fuel lines or near the fuel pump? how is your ignition system, plenty powerful? How bout the plugs, are you sure their not fouled by fuel? all of these could be a cause and i recommend going to get a mechanical fuel preasure gauge and starting there. gooood luck!

well i have checked the plugs and there fine. I do have a mechanical fuel pressure gauge. so what was the shit coming out of my exhaust? I haven't checked for a kinked fuel line but my fuel pressure is fine so i don't think that is the case. I changed my fuel filter like 3-5k ago.

i also just noticed that the safc is only reading my rpms by around half? The tach says about 9-1000 and the safc says about 5-600?

well i just bought some fuel additives and i'm going to try and make it into town for some good gas.

dont worry about whats coming out of the exhaust because the way you described it , its more then likely just moisture. i dont know much about the s-afc so i cant help you there. you could try disconnecting it and try running the car w/o it and see if anything changes. chances are the problem is very minor and right in front of your face (thats why its soo hard to find). peace

Posted by optimuspeterson, Aug-05-02 03:57 PM
well ignore the rpm thing. I'm an idiot :-)

i have pretty much decided that it goes terribly lean when i give it gas. If i barely breath on the throttle it is fine but if i give it any more gas the o2 sensor goes to like .1 or lower (i know that you said it isn't accurate in open loop), but it is all i can think of.
28102, RE: got car running but....

so to unhook the safc can i just unplugg it from the unit? or do i have to connect all the wires back up to normal?
28103, RE: got car running but....
Posted by JasonESi_T, Aug-06-02 01:39 AM
You can either one, just unplug the red power wire, or two, disconnect the entire unit, and reconnect the stock MAP sensor wires back, since they're been cut inline to hook up the S-AFC.
28104, RE: got car running but....
Posted by optimuspeterson, Aug-06-02 04:21 AM
ok, i unhooked it and the car started right up and would go to about 2k and them slowly drop in rpms and when it gets around 1k it dies. it does this every time. Should it run normaly with the power wire cut?

what pressure readings am i suppose to see? what numbers?
28105, RE: got car running but....
Posted by jamesman, Aug-06-02 04:43 AM
i don't know if that will work. try to reconnect the map wire or jumper it with another wire and see if that helps.

so i jumped the map sensor wires and it would hold a idle. so i take it out and it is worse than it was before. It wouldn't rev over 3k, even if i held the throttle down. It would die right away if i put any load on the engine. if would even stall if i reved to like 2k and let off the throttle.

so what does a tps sensor do? when i sent my throttle body off to be bored, the sensor came back looking like someone melted it.

28107, RE: got car running but....

might want to pull the tb off and check the resistence on the tps and also the iac motor since its next to it..

if you can connect the power wire for your safc back up you can check the tps voltages it is on the sensor chk screen of the safc. it should be near 0 when the throttle is closed and near 5 when it is fully open. i think that was the way it was. but check that. verify that all your sensors are working. verify that your timing marks are lined up. also check the map sensor voltage or resistance. it may be a map sensor issue. when mine went bad i got a CEL though.
but hook up the tps and recheck all the sensor connections.
TPS
IAC
MAP
IAT
cam position
crank position
O2 1
O2 2
injector harness
make sure all your injectors are ticking

I think that is it

if the injectors weren't working wouldn't it throw a cel?
28110, RE: got car running but....
Posted by jamesman, Aug-06-02 10:25 AM
well, if they were not working then it may do that, but one may be clogged or if the coil is shorted then it will not open correctly and problems will arise.

well i think i found the problem. its the o2 sensor. I unplugged it and started the car up and took it for a drive and it is perfect.

so i'm driving around with it unplugged right now. Another question is why would the my o2 sensor even give me a reading with it unplugged? i have corbins o2 sensor and it was giveing me a reading of 1.6**.

so the last question is..... where should i get an o2 sensor? are there any aftermarket ones avialable? I don't really want to splice the wires but i will if i have to.

thanks for all your help guys

good to hear you got it all up and running right... in close loop mode your ecu is getting feedback from the o2 sensor ( and others ?) to keep it running right and since it could not get the info it needed it would cut you off..well maybe someone else could explain it better ..hehe... well let us know what happens now...
