27891, Update on overheating.... Posted by Strauss, Jul-31-02 02:25 AM
Well, my car has still been overheating on high speed runs. I was racing another LS-1 yesterday and she overheated the first time we ran...up to about 120mph or so. So we pulled over(he's a buddy of mine) and popped the hood to let her cool down....my upper radiator hose was swelled up like a ballon!!!!! If that orange sleeve HRC send with their kits wasn't on, she would have blew! The lower hose was fine, just the upper was HUGE! Now, I have a slight exhaust leak coming from my downpipe-turbo connection(lost one of the nuts and stud at the track the other day)....do you think the extra heat coming out of there could be causing my problems??? The leak isn't audible, and I was still trapping 115mph with it, so I don't think it's that bad...but still, that radiator hose is directly above it. After I replaced the hose, I took her out for a spin to see if she was gonna overheat again. Sure enough, she did....but the new hose was fine. My cap on my overflow tank had blew off and antifreeze spilled out all over in my engine bay....and the antifreeze was almost boiling(it was bubbling). I think either that exhaust leak is causing a bit too much heat in the engine bay, or part of my radiator is plugged up(to be causing that hose to swell up). What do you guys think.....I don't think it's my headgasket because my compression is good(if my compression was bad would I really be trapping 115.9mph on ~11psi). Oh...the overheating drama....

You did flush the radiator right and replaced the preesure cap and the thermostat right? I have been having slight over heating problems but not at high speed. It was getting a little hot when I would idle for along time. Hasnt done it in the last week or so though.

I have yet to replace the raiator cap, but I have replaced the thermostat...might as well replace that cap as well....

Yeah that could be it.

Do you still have the stock radiator?
Why don't you upgrade to a Fluidyne or better?
I know it's 400bucks but you shouldn't worry about overheating anymore.

Well, I just got a new radiator cap today and ordered a new lower radiator hose which will be here Friday. If these things don't fix it, I guess a Fluidyne will have to be in order....I hope not though, 'cause $400 is not easy to come by nowadays for me!

when my cap went out it did what you are saying. when you get the new one buy the one for the gst, it has a higher pressure rating i think 16psi. it will make your cooling system a little more efficient. Lates james

I've always overheated during the summer months here in the desert. It gets past 110 and damn dry here. It all started with that intercooler. I think it is blocking a substantial amount of cooling area. I have both fans kicking in at the same time and have changed out my antifreeze to the orange stuff. I'm planning to 1) Getting the 160 thermostat 2) Getting a 97 Bumper 3) Cleaning, outside/inside the FMIC
Hopefully it'll bring down the temps cuz my overflow tank is to the brim. Is there a way to check if your thermostat is working w/o taking it out?
Thanks 96 RST

Off the subject, but I'm very impressed with you quarter mile time and trap speed, at only about 11 psi; what was your 60', and did you have slicks on? Thanks!

Hey thanks for the compliments! I run my 17" rims you see in my sig pic.....but I have BFG G-force drag radials on the front. I think I have a minor boost leak(always thought it was my boost controller) because boost would spike to about 13-14psi and fall right down to ~11psi or so in every gear. Here's my latest time slip, from just this past Saturday.

I know I can get faster than that, I just need to get some traction! That run I was spinning my tires through the top of first gear and all the way through second :(

I noticed the track you go to doesnt give you many check point times on that slip. I go to Orlando speed world which is by far not the best track around and they have around 7-8 check points on the slip.

Yeah, the track we go to is in Canada....and they don't give you shit on the time slips. It's all good though, the only things I want are on there(60',1/4mile,1/4mph). And back to this overheating problem, I switched caps from the 16psi(non-turbo) to the 13psi(GS-T cap). It seems to be working better, the car took a lot of abuse before she overheated last night....more than she has before. But it did still overheat :( Today I'm gonna try picking up either a 180 or 160 degree thermostat, and see if that will finish her off. I'll let you guys know.....

Hey let me know how it turns out because my temp guage is going farther than it used to also. ? though I know nothing about cooling so what do the thermostats with diff degree ratings do for you? Does that mean they wont show hot till that temp or what?
