27189, HRC inline fuel pump is LOUD!! Posted by BoostedGS, Jul-23-02 01:45 PM
Has anyone with a Hahn kit tried to quiet the insanely loud noise of their inline fuel pump? I was thinking of covering it with PVC pipe insulation foam, or maybe using some expanding spray foam and filling in that whole area, but I'm worried that this might overheat the pump. Any suggestions??

I've seen a vid that's taken inside a 10 second car, and the pump is just as loud as the HRC one. I think it sounds cool as hell when you pull up to someone, and hear that pump along with your BOV. Then again, that's just my opinion......... :thumbsup

Dude, my pump is loud as hell too! Now i'm not sayin just a little buzzing or anything, but you can hear it like 15 feet from the car. Inside the car with the windows up, its pretty annoying, but i live with it, and it doesnt bother me anymore really. Whenever i'm stopped at a light, people look over and have this wierd look on their face :) I used foam tape between the metal plate of the pump, and the body of the car, that helped a little, but the pump itself is what is making all the noise. It vibrates the fuel lines so much, that when the pump has been on for a while and is hot after longer trips, i can feel the shifter nob vibrating! Its nuts! Oh well, price you pay to go fast :) I have heard other Hahn kits pumps, and theirs were pretty quiet compared to mine :(

Yes, mine is definitely annoyingly loud too! It will get really annoying if I don't have my stereo on all the time. But like you said, it gets hot when it's on for long periods of time, so I'm afraid to cover it, especially with that expanding foam that will completely cover it.
Has anyone sucessfully quieted theirs?

Noise comes along with performance.

i got the hrc inline pump, then i got my s-fmu, then i added some 315cc injectors, then my pump was super loud! so i drop in a walbro 255hp and now its as if i dont have one most of the time...i love it..:)

If it's loud, at least you'll know it's working ;-)

well i rather have it not as loud, and just look my at fuel pressure gauge...

Things that help: - Replace stock fuel pump, inline is fighting to get fuel from it. - Pipe insulation around pump - Rubber Fuel Hose pieces + washers between mounting bracket and frame - Fuel Hose around all metal lines within 2 feet of the inline - Dyna-mat your whole back seat (dont laugh, james did it) :thumbsup
General idea is to keep the pump, wires, lines, brackets, & screws from touching any metal part of your car.
Too bad we don't have 10 second cars, yet still have to deal with that Accell pump. 10 second cars also can't idle for crap, they don't have passenger seats, and you have to wear a helmet while driving... doesn't mean I want that on my daily driver. Don't tell me a stage 1/2 kit makes an eclipse a "race car", cause it's not, just a faster daily driven. Not hating on anyone :) I just hear the copout of justifying annoying parts by saying "race cars use them" way too often.
If the HRC had bigger injectors to start with (like it should have anyways, heard blown engines?) you could use a much quieter, cheaper, and WAY SIMPLER intank pump at stage 1/2/3. Then when you got closer to a real race car around stage 4/5 you could add in the annoying pump.

You can blow an engine just as easily on larger than stock injectors as you can on stock ones. Stock injectors keep the cost down. The limiting factor is th strength of the stock pistons and your ability to tune the car, not the ability of the fuelsystem to deliver more gas.

>Things that help: >- Replace stock fuel pump, inline is fighting to get fuel >from it.
Explain this one more. Do you mean I should replace it with an aftermarket pump, like the Walboro? If so, I won't even need the inline pump anymore, right?
My inline pump changes tone a lot too. Sometimes the buzzing is barely noticeable and sometimes it's downright LOUD! Is this common with these fuel pumps? I can't say it's defective because it still maintains fuel pressure.
I'll try insulating the metal-on-metal a little better and wrapping the metal lines with fuel line. Thanks!

technically you'd be good w/ just the 255lph but since you already have the other one why not keep it just in case? might as well have 2 incase one gives out during boost or something. that and both will complement eachother so neither is working too hard. just a though.
ps i've got an msd inline pump mounted below the tank right where the fuel filter bolts are, above a skidplate, and DAMN is it loud, and it changes tone all the time. i've heard its' good for it to stay above 1/2 a tank so you don't stress it out too much, but for some reason i'm always around 1/4 full. maybe i'll have $ soon to keep it topped off.

The pump changes tone when your fuel pressures change. The lower the pressure, the louder the pump. Mine does it all the time as well, I can watch my fuel pressure gauge in my car move, and when it moves, the sound changes.

It is much safer to have an upgraded in-tank and in-line pump. People have been complaining about the lack of fuel from just the in-tank pump for years. Get both and you are much safer in the long run.
Though from my own experiences, the normal HRC fuel system can pump PLENTY of fuel into the engine. Running over 1 volt on the o2 gauge can atest to that. Also the crapload of black smoke I would get from the exhaust...

27204, RE: HRC inline fuel pump is LOUD!! Posted by BoostedGS, Jul-24-02 08:16 AM
Yeah, I haven't had any problems with my inline pump, my only complaint is the noise. Before I blew my engine, I had installed my 415cc injectors and I was seeing 1.02 for my o2's at 12psi of boost. But before I got a chance to lean it out, my pistons decided to call it quits!
I'll probably just do a little more insulating of the inline pump, and if it's still bothering me I'll just go ahead and get the Walboro.
Thanks!

Hey just out of curiosity, did you run 12 psi on stock internals? Did you ever go over 8 psi on stock internals, and not have any probs until you hit 12? Just want to ease my mind some at my 8 psi haha

27206, RE: HRC inline fuel pump is LOUD!! Posted by RyaN95i4, Jul-24-02 10:57 AM
my hrc inline was fine...till i was looking for a loose connection when my pcm started acting up, went to retighten one of the posts, and the damn post snapped...leaking fuel all over. now i run just the walbro.
sound wise, the walbro is just barely more noticeable than the stock pump. no comparison to the hrc inline pump.
to the last post, i run 8-9lbs daily, and have made several 12lb runs, and have seen accidental boost spikes as high as 20lbs, on the stock engine. been boosting for over 9 months, still perfect compression. knock on wood

27207, RE: HRC inline fuel pump is LOUD!! Posted by HadesOmega, Jul-24-02 01:02 PM
haha hella yeah my inline pump is hella loud too it. My stock fuel pump got louder when I did the fuel pump rewire mod also. Haha I still can't lean out my mixture :P Except for on really cold days though... I heard it get queiter after you drive it for a bit. Its gonna sound louder at night also. haha I guess I've gotten used to the sound of the fuel pump it doesn't bother me anymore.

check it out, i also tried insulating bolts and my whole interior, piss of crap... wasted my time and money. if the noise bothers you that much save for a walbro 255or hp and you will not even know its there. trust me.. i have a system and it still bugged before i got my walbro 255hp.. you will thank me later...

I ran 8psi with stock internals for about 6 months with no problems, except I was running pretty lean. Anything could run away from me on the highway because my EGT's would always run hot under boost in the higher gears. As long as you're watching your EGT's, your car should be fine.
I guess I'll just break down and buy a Walbro soon. I should probably also ditch the Hahn FPR and get a S-FMU. What's the price on those?
Does it bother anyone else that we bought a kit that comes with aftermarket parts, but we still need to upgrade them???

27210, RE: HRC inline fuel pump is LOUD!! Posted by BoostedGS, Jul-25-02 01:37 AM
Okay, another question.....is the Walbro 255lph kinda overkill for the Super16g?? I have friends running 20g's and FP Red turbos that use the Walbro 255.
I have a friend selling a Nippon Denso 210lph pump pretty cheap. Would this pump provide enough fuel for 15psi??

>>>Okay, another question.....is the Walbro 255lph kinda overkill for the Super16g?? I have friends running 20g's and FP Red turbos that use the Walbro 255.<<<
But your friends (I assume 4G63) use a 1:1 FPR. The Walbro can flow a LOT of fuel BUT not at the high pressures that most of us run. That's why you use an inline pump also. So no the Walbro is not overkill.

Okay, but I was hoping to use the Walbro INSTEAD of the inline to get rid of the loud buzzing noise. If I swap the stock intank pump with a Walbro 255 and keep the inline pump too, will that make the inline pump a lot quieter?
And why do the 4g63 guys run 1:1 ratios with their FPR and we run so much higher??
|
27213, RE: HRC inline fuel pump is LOUD!! Posted by XtremeRS, Jul-25-02 03:47 AM
Why couldn't you totally ditch the intank pump and just run the inline pump? All assuming you can get the fuel from the tank to the inline without a problem, i'd guess you would have to re-run some fuel lines to bypass it? So most of you guys say to just use the walboro intank pump and no inline? Is that right? Do you think i can just run the walboro intank by itself when i upgrade to the 30lb injectors? They will take a little less fuel pressure so..??
|
27214, RE: HRC inline fuel pump is LOUD!! Posted by pn0ymahal, Jul-25-02 05:31 AM
if want to do 15psi, u must have bigger injectors like 440cc about.. but if u just want to drop the fuel pump noise u can leave the inline still intact and just drop in a walbro 255 or 255hp it will drop the noise down. if u want to get rid of the inline u just to redo the fuel lines etc.. i just left my inline pump in..it wont hurt.. trust me dude...and check out corbin site for info on what pump will work for u..

I have 415cc injectors.
Got a link to the Corbin site so I can check it out??
Do most of you guys run the low pressure or high pressure Walbro?
Thanks!!

27216, RE: HRC inline fuel pump is LOUD!! Posted by jamesman, Jul-25-02 05:49 AM
I bought a walbro and put it in my tank for the heck of it. I was using the HRC inline also. It made such a difference in noise that you would not believe it. I told Mike to do the same and he did so and he can attest to the major difference it makes. It is a night and day difference in noise levels from running the stock pump and the HRC inline and running the walbro intank and HRC inline. Your car sounds literally like a jet when you have the walbro intank and the HRC inline. like a slight hi pitch turbine sound. there, but barely noticable. do like Mike says if you are having problems with noise put the walbro in and leave the HRC inline there too
