27084, EGT problems. Posted by Dave_FL, Jul-22-02 07:06 AM
Well I finally got my car on the highway since the rebuild. My egt's are freaking through the roof!!! I have the probe in the downpipe becuase the previous owner of the kit had it there. I plan on moving it to the #4 runner soon. But you ar esupposed top add 200 to the number with it in the downpipe. When I am going about 65-70 in 5th gear my EGT temp gets to like 1300downpipe (1500 #4 runner). That is high. And I an get it up to almost 1400 downpipe (1600 #4 runner) without boosting over 2 psi. My boost gauge starts to register at 2 psi. Somethings got to be wrong if I can get the egt's up to almost 1600 degrees with the car not even in boost. I am getting very annoyed with my car lately!!! I havent put the new injectors in yet. I hope they fix this damn EGT problem. my car used to run kinda hot in the egt's before the rebuild but now its even worse. You would think it would get better with the lower compresion.
I forgot to add this....Would getting the colder bkre7 plugs make my EGT's drop significantly?

To a point, yes. Colder plugs, contrary to popular belief, don't FIRE colder, they just pull more heat out of the combustion chamber. They are more conductive to heat transfer.

I now how you feel dave.. My egts shoot up to 930 degrees at WOt at 8 psi, but my a/f gauge reads .93!?? I have the cooler injectors also, and they helped a little. are you running lean? could be that your fpr is not receiving a boost signal from the intake manifold. good luck man. I have not found a solution to my problem yet either.

I have plenty of fuel pressure. I get a little over 100 psi of fuel at 8 psi. I just hate not being able to get on it hard on the highway. I will lose to a damn GEO on the highway becuase I can only race for about 5 seconds. Its really pissing me off. I am going to richen the shit out of it when i get the new injectors in.

why would you richen it with bigger injectors? i forgot what size injectors ur putting in, 441cc? u should be leaning it out ... your egt will be really low without even touching the super afc...

What I meant was I am going to make the car run very rich (which actually means I am not going to lean it out that much on the s-afc)

I would not completely trust the readings in the dp using the 200 deg difference calculations. After comparing the temps in Armonds Avenger using an EGT in the dp and one in each runner, the difference turned out to actually be less than 200. It truly is hard to say what it works out to. Even I am using the dp and now think I should move it contrary to previous arguments I had where I mistakenly believed that is fine. If you do full wideband tuning and know your a/f mixture is accurate and then use the egt from the dp for reference it is not such an issue, but still move it to the runner.
