26982, Engine Temp.......
Posted by sonikbewm, Jul-21-02 09:45 AM
Help me! This happens mainly when I'm driving on the highway, but now it has started to do this in town, my temp gauge in my car goes up anywhere between 75-95%. As soon as I stop at a light, the gauge goes back down to normal. I've changed the thermostat and checked the radiator cap. I just put a new headgasket on when I rebuilt my motor a couple of months ago. What could be causing this? Should I think that it is my radiator that is bad? Any help would be great.

but if you check your reserve tank how is the water ??? is it boiling or just regular temperature stick your finger to see how hot it is ???

It could really be that your gague sensor is going bad or it is bad.

I can't help you out either, but I'm having the EXACT SAME problem as you right now! I as well changed my thermostat and just topped off my antifreeze, and that din't help. For the first 20min. or so of driving, I can beat the piss out of it and the temp gauge won't go past halfway. But after driving for awhile, it eventually will go up, even if I'm babying the car. If I let it sit and idle, it drops back down to normal in like 5-10min. Then it proceeds to be one continuos cycle....it's driving me crazy! I'm gonna try flushing my radiator out tomorrow and see if that helps....

I just drove it pretty hard for awhile tonight and my temp gauge didn't move at all. As long as it's dark and not too hot out, it stays normal. I am going to go insane!!! I'll keep trying stuff and let you know if anything fixes it. Let me know how flushing your radiator does for yours. I'll try just about anything now to fix this.

I had close to the same problem. For me though the car would stay cool while i was driving and then creep up when I came to a stop. My problem was the radiator fan switch went bad. Its the sensor that screws in right under the thermostat housing if I am remembering right. You might want to check and make sure your cooling fan is on when your temp is up.

My fans come on just fine, and I just had my water pump replaced at the 60K service(I'm at 70K). I'm in the process of flushing my radiator right now, I'll let you guys know what happens.....

My car had 120,000 miles on it before the rebuild. I had the water pump and everything changed during the rebuild too. Both of my fans come on. The gauge just shows it to be extremely hot during the day with this great Kansas heat.
26994, *Update*.....

Well, I flushed the radiator and took her out for a drive. I rode around for about 45min. and boosted her pretty hard. Temps never even reached half way, the needle stayed just shy of half. I'm gonna ride some more tonight and that should be the real test, I'll keep you guys updated once again.
