I was looking through some posts, and saw something about possibly a 14b setup, what do you guys think of it? i have heard that the turbo starts to die out after 5500, what do you think would be a good alternative for a 14b that doesn't sacrafice quick spool up, how about the small 16g? thanks.

alright this is starting to scare me. i have a 14b sitting in my garage. everyone has been saying for months that a 14b is a good choice for a custom job. but i posted earlier about pics of a 14b install and it doesnt look like anybody has them. am i goign to be the first to do a 14b install on our cars? fun. if all i have is install pics of 16g's and t3's i am going to be a little clueless. mostly the downpipe connection is what is confusing me. i am not sure if i shuold take off the manifold on my turbo that has the o2 sensor in it or not. and im not positive as to what all the holes and connections are for.

You should just go to a junkyard and find a 1g car out in the lot that comes stock with the 14b. That way you can just see for yourself. I believe that the 14b is both water and oil cooled (but don't quote me on it). that means that at the top of the turbo there should be an inlet for oil and at the bottom there should be the return line for it to go back to the oil pan. Also there will be an inlet and outlet for coolant to go through the turbo. I'm sure you could post pics of your turbo on here and many ppl could tell you which hole is which. As far as the downpipe goes, you will have to mount the turbo on your car and see exactly where the downpipe needs to line up. You might be able to find a 1g downpipe with a 14b on it at a junkyard and modify it (at least get the flange). These dillemas are what makes a custom kit difficult, but hopefully it will pay off for you in the end. I do think that you will be happy with the 14b though as long as you arent looking to build an absolute monster. Good luck.

:)

14b on the stock manifold using a "custom" downpipe hhaha.. also with coolant connections.. the pics are kinda lousy, but that's what i got on the server..

It was a lot of fun while it lasted :) just remember to inject enough fuel and use an EGT! haha.. (*DOH!*)

the connections on the side are water, the top/bottom are oil.

It spooled hella quick.. but i had to run 12psi because that's what the wastegate was stuck at.. but approx 10psi at 2200rpm isn't a laughin matter.. unless your like me and you've already got 3 car lengths on the guy that *was* beside you at the light.. haah..

0-60.. you won't beat a 14b.. maybe a t25 will be close.. highway.. forget it.. your runnin high rpm and you need a larger turbo to keep up with the flow.. although with the 14b.. no need to downshift into 4th.. just peg it in 5th.. lotsa torque on tap.. left my jeep cherokee with my wife driving.. she wanted to race from 60.. jeep downshifted into 2nd and started to haul.. and i coasted by in 5th and walked it BAD..

a 14b will take a AWD talon to 12's.. so.. unlike what people think.. it isn't THAT bad of a turbo ;-)

just remember.. torque is fun.. haha..

all i have to say is WOW. Wheatking, Alain, matt95, and everyone else that i forgot, you guys are so helfull it is unbelievable. i was starting to get discouraged because yes there are a few things i was unsure about (different connections and such with the turbo) but i realize thats its no big deal. so what i am going to do is use my new digital camera to get some pics up here for you guys so i can start figuring everyting out. i like the idea of going to a junk yard to find a 1g eclipse so i can at least try and get the flange from the downpipe. well ill get picture up soon so ill be able to have this going as soon as i retrieve a few more major parts. and dont worry, i am going to have plenty of fuel and plenty of gauges.
:-)

Yea, just do it.. hehe.. people worry too much about small stupid things.. like what BOV sounds better.. :rolleyes

The 14b will bolt to the stock manifold.. what you do is remove the studs from the stock manifold.. enlarge the holes a bit in the manifold and use a 2" stud on the turbo and then nuts on the manifold side to torque it down. you only get 2 bolts holding the turbo to the manifold.. but i didn't have any exhaust leaks that way.. The stock manifold works good because it's very directional.. kinda like a turbo header.. but if you like your A/C.. then you'll have to use a log style like alain sells.
