26645, Burning Oil
Posted by Lee, Jul-16-02 10:22 AM
I was driving from Oklahoma City to Abilene (about 300 miles), about half way I noticed my oil pressure gauge was reading low. I checked the oil and there was none on the dip stick! I put in 3 quarts of oil and it's still a little low (at the low line on the dip stick). What gives? Car is running good, EGT's are normal, fuel pressure is good. I don't understand what's going on. Anybody have any thoughts? Oh, I do have a small exhaust leak but I've had it for a while.

(BTW I'd HIGHLY recommend an oil pressure gauge, there were no signs it was low besides the gauge.)

I went through this about a year ago, or something similar. two things right off the top of my head 1. if it's rings and time for a rebuild you will have a constant blue smoke and it will be bad real bad 2. best case scenario a top end job is needed, new valve seals and head job-but do a compression test and that will tell u. if its the later, pull your head and take it to a machine shop yourself you'll save more cash than at satan unless ur still under warranty

one more thing your knock sensor should have kick your oil light if the level was that low you should check that too.

Okay, I just went out to look under the hood. And apparently I'm not burning oil. There's oil all over the bottom of the engine. Any ideas?
