2646, 550cc's w/ safc Posted by rsXboy99, Mar-12-01 03:00 PM
I thought we could use this setup in our cars w/o a problem. I have 550s ordered and i have a safc. The shop is gonna put in the injectors either tomomrow or the next day (finally after 4 months of rebuilding) but regardless i dont see why we cant use the safc to turn the injectors down for off boost operation, and then tune them into "high" mode on the safc?

Have you read the specifics for S-AFC's?
They can fatten or lean any injectors up to 50% of its flow capacity. Our stockers flow 235 cc's. Half of 550's are 275. At 275, you're over stock 235 cc flow capactity. You're over. It may or may not work with two possibilities:
1. It works fine. Since it's been said that our ecu can handle injectors up to 310 and by trimming the 550's under that amount, you'll be okay since 375 is under 310.
2. It won't work. Irregardless of what I said in "1," the ecu will go bonkers over the large injectors that large and won't be able to idle correctly. The S-AFC doesn't have a trim setting for injectors under 100 rpm's. You'll be angry. =-(
Do I know the absolute answer here?....nope!

I have no idea about injectors, but I will tell you what I know....
My ECU seems to idle just FINE at 50-60psi fuel pressure... I guess that says quite a bit about how TOLERANT our ECUs are!!!

I plan on getting the Hahn stage 2 and a SAFC. i'm not upgrading internals and i plan on running 7 to 10 psi. will i need bigger injectors and if so what size will be sufficient with this setup without causing the idle problems?

Well,
Doing the math, I think the main problem you will run into is at idle. The AFC does not adjust below 1000rpm and our cars are set to idle at 800-900rpm. The base fuel pressure will have to be set down to around 28psi or less for this to work with an AFC. I am suprised no one has tried to explore the new HKS Fuel Controller with idle correction option. Now, if you can make it idle, I think you can get away with it. At 15psi you would not have to run more than 60psi for fuel pressure which is a good thing. One of the only side effects I see would be a loss in gas mileage as you go to larger and larger saturated injectors. Guys, any more input? These of course are numbers from my head and not real world experience as the truth is if you do get the 550's installed you will be the first to do so that I have heard of.

I am considering the HKS for just that reason. It does everything the AFC does (+- 50% adjustaments) and more (rpms points more adjustable and seperate idle control from 100-1600rpms) for the same price and doesn't take up but about half a din space. I'd miss the telemetry and nice display but oh well I want a indash flip up TV anyway. I dont think anyone has tried it because it hasn't been out very long and its taken people so long to figure out the AFCs that most just stick with it (lets be honest its the display).

2652, HKS CAMP Posted by RS_Guy, Mar-13-01 04:50 AM
If you want a flip-up TV, you might also consider adding to that the HKS CAMP. (if you're rich :-) ) Now no one said that its cheap...

BUt it does make a cool looking gimmic in your car...

Air/Fuel Ratio Correction Function Controls air/fuel ratios through airflow meter or pressure sensor Range - 50% rich to 50% lean from the factory baseline settings Output can be adjusted in 1% increments Eleven points of adjustment between 650 and 8000 rpm, these points can be arbitrarily moved in 50 rpm increments Response Correction Function Engine response can be adjusted through airflow meter/pressure sensor Range - 1m/sec to 100m/sec Six points of adjustment between 650 and 5000 rpm, these points can be arbitrarily moved in 50 rpm increments. First in the industry to offer this function in a simple airflow correction device Idle Correction Function Idle mixture can be adjusted 50% rich to 50% lean in 1% increments within the idle range (650 to 1500 rpm) from factory baseline setting This adjustment is made independent of the other eleven points of mixture adjustments in the air/fuel correction function Electronic Idle Stabilizer Function (EIDS) This automatic function prevents engine stalling or stumbling in some airflow meter vehicles which use blow-off valves discharged to the atmosphere when throttle is released Base of Adjustability and set-up This device is very simple to set-up and adjust The head unit is adjusted through three control knobs HKS recommends tuning for this device be done on a chassis dynamometer with use of an accurate air/fuel ratio measuring device

Any pics of how it looks?
Damn...I just recently bought an APEX-i SAFC...Does the HKS have the fancy light show (display?) :)

I bought mine too, but the price is so good I might just resell my AFC.
It's funny 'cause this is the place that's doing my Stroker Kit.

No fancy display. It looks like their EVC boost controller. This Alamo used to be linked to the one in texas doing your stroker kit. I'm not sure if they are still linked anymore. When I got my springs from them they had several Texas locations then the site which we're speaking of had this big move to Luisiana a few yrs ago (give or take a yr or two) and is just a big parts warehouse operation.

You can make special RPM points in the S-AFC through the settings, say if you needed another correction between 4000-5000 Also, at Idle the AFC corrects for whatever you have set at 1K, or you can put a special RPM point in @ 800rpm
If you adjust -50% @ 1k, it sets a correct value of -50% @ 800rpm (or anything below 1k) because it has no other values below that, so even though you didn't "set" a -50% correction value at 800rpm, it still corrects for -50% because -50% is the forst value it sees

so which is better?
Apexi AFC or HKS AFR?
I bought the APEX for a good deal...and kinda partial to it cause of the fancy light show :)

2663, In terms of tuning... Posted by Skrilla, Mar-14-01 04:17 PM
...The HK$ S-AFR. It provides 12 additional increments of correct motor operations seperate of the 11 different increments used just to richen or lean your normal fuel curve. The Apex-i S-AFC on the other hand provides maniold pressure(for some cars) in a meter or graphical display Inj. Duty Cycle, rpms, new A/F%, and a beautiful display. The HK$ S-AFR is the size of a stereo din and can fit almost anyway unconcealed (since it isn't emissions legal but neither is the AFC). If one has the money they would both be beneficial (maybe overkill)
