26348, And the next question...custom IC piping!!!!! Posted by HiOnPSI, Jul-13-02 06:19 PM
Alright, did some research, and after hearing your guys' thoughts on my uncontrollable boost, i've decided to try to get the IC put on my car this week. I read the VFAQ's on mounting custom ICs on 1G eclipses, one guy used high quality radiator hose. I also thought about ordering a bunch of piping from JC Whitney and piecing it together. XtremeRS did a custom job, but i couldnt find anything else about it. Would anybody wanna pitch in and help with dimensions, which piping i'm going to need, suggestions, etc, etc?

Well my setup consists of a 1st gen side mount IC, and i had 2" mandrel bent exaust piping made to fit it in. Basically i cut out the 90 degree section out of the Hahn outlet pipe, where the BOV is connected, then ran a pipe off of each cut end to the inlet and outlet of the IC. I used a 2" I.D. radiator hose, cut into 4" long couplers, and worm gear clamps to hold it toghether, and this setup is working great for me. If you can find a place to bend you some pipe, then do that, or you can piece it together from places like Jcwhitney or Roadraceengineering.com. As for your boost spikes, check out the vacum hose that is on the turbo itself. You cant miss it. See if there is a leak in the hose, or if its cracked or whatever. Even with an upgraded exaust, you still shouldn't be geeting any more boost. Once the wastgate spring sees 5 psi, it opens up to bleed off exaust form the exaust turbin wheel, keeping the boost at 5, and no hiher. So something is making your wastegate not open right..When i had my kit at stage 1, no IC, i always hit a perfect 5 psi, all the time, no spikes, no less. Def give HRC a call. I would't put any boost controller or different wastgate spring on until you get this figured out. Check that vacum hose!

So, basically you used 2" ID? radiator hose and the original Hahn pipe. That's exactly what I was thinking to use, but where did you buy your radiator hose, what is I.D., and and what do you mean by a coupler. Sorry, my skills are somewhat limited. I'll check that vacuum line to see if it's possibly pinched or something, but I don't plan to do anything else until I talk to Hahn.

Would you happen to have any pictures so I can get a better idea of whta you did. Also, the 1G SMIC mounts to the horn bracket? of our cars, right? At what point did you use your mandrel bends?

Here are pics of my setup. 2" I.D. just stands for 2" inside diameter hose. Even though the Hahn piping by the compressor outlet is 2.25", the hose can be pushed onto it without a problem. The pipeing after the BOV that goes to the throttle body is 2.5", but it steps down in size right after the bov, but i left a section of the 2.25" pipe, so i could use the same radiator hose to connect the piping. The Side mount IC fits infront of the opening in the bumper, and i used one of the brackets on the IC, and it fit nicely right up against the frame rail, then made a few other brackets to mount the rest of it. I still have to get the piping painted yet,so its not real pretty or anything, but it gets the job done. I had to cut the pipe that the air filter is hooked up to also, i had to shorten it because how the dude bent the piping, it would have been in the way.

Do you have any pics of the actual IC? I have mine at a slight angle and I kinda want to redo the piping so it's straight up and down. I want to see where/how your's is mounted. Thanks

The piping that you had made, is what they call press bend here in Kansas. How's that working for you? I'm going this route as we speak. I pulled a 1g SMIC for 15 bux and wire wheeled it to clean shit off it. I've only had to make one bracket so far. There was a threaded hole where the bumper support "was" so I bought a strip of galvanized steel(no rust) and drilled two holes, one at each end. Then bought the correct thread pitch for the already threaded hole and bent the steel strip enough to bolt that together. I then got a bolt and nut to bolt the strip to the IC. It's pretty sturdy. I have used a 2" hole-saw to cut through the plastic inner fender and let the bottom of the IC to kinda rest there. I'm now searching for a piece of radiator hose that will be big enough to fit over 2" and make a funny "S" shape to come under the fuse block. I can snap some pics once I get it going. Maybe enough guys can do this and have it just as common, not to mention twice as cheap, as the Starion set-up.

Well true "press bent" piping makes small crushes in the piping to bend it. The bender used was rather old, so unlike newer, state of the art mandrel bender machines, it does put a *slight* indent at the bend, but not like a crush bend. The new mandrel benders, the high dollar ones, makes a nice smooth bend, much like Hahn's piping they use. Either way, its working out excellent for me. Got the IC for FREE, and the piping for 40 bucks, and the 2" radiator hose for 8 bucks, to make my couplers. 8 bucks for some clamps, and i'm at stage 2 levels now, for a lot less then the 800 bucks Hahn wants for their upgrade package :)

Here are some pics, hopefully you can tell how its mounted in there. Now i did have this mounted differently before i did the piping. I had the IC reversed basically, with the pipe that is on the bottom now, was on the top, vise versa. When it was that way, the IC was tilted down a little bit for wheel well clearance, but i didnt like that because i thouhgt it would have hurt the airflow throug it. So it ended up like this.

I'll send you some pics tonight (I'm too stupid to know how to post them) and maybe you can tell me what you think. I also have a WW front, so I might be at a little more advantage room-wise.

And hey Erik, where in Kansas are you from. I'm one of the original members of Kansas DSM, we're based in Wichita and have frequent meetings, the last meeting we had we ended up with almost 50 people showing up. The website for it is http://kansasdsm.shorturl.com
Thanks for posting all of the pictures, they're going to come in handy. I saw somebody mount a Starion IC with nothing-but radiator hose, and i was wondering how well that would hold up, I NEED to have this IC done before the race in Ark City on the 27th, actually-- ASAP to try to remedy my boost problem. I think this, combined with one of my friends' 8lb. spring should take care of my boost problem.

I live in Pittsburg, Kansas (PSU student) and my parents live in Overland Park. I'm staying with my folks during the summer so I can work in Johnson County. I'll check out the site. BTW I think it was Hades Omega that runs a stock Starion with some junkyard piping and radiator hose. That seems like a good, cheap set-up. I'm not sure how many problems he ran into, but I hardly hear any boost problems from him.

Columbus area. My car is going through a few changes in a couple weeks so I don't know if it will be drivable. I think I'm going to the Slam Jam show in Akron though so I'll be able to ride w/ an ASOG friend to that. That's even closer to you. Wait you said W. Michigan. Maybe it's not closer :/

Check out my sig there some pix of my piping. All junkyard piping baby, that's a junyard intercooler also. hehe if your looking an intercooler I got an ok intercooler from a Isuzu Impulse hehe. Anyway I used piping from volvos, supras, saabs, and audi's. Anything that has turbo has some kinda good quality piping. I also got silicone couplers for free hehe :P 2 inch piping is good enough also I got 2.5" for some of my piping and I get BOV flutter :(

Alright, today I got my intercooler secured and the piping placed. Everything seems tight, no boost leaks, but i'm only getting 3psi instead of the 4 I got before. Seems also like my big problem with boost increase at high RPM has curved, i'll get a maximum of 5-6psi regardless of RPM or gear, instead of the lovely 10-11 i was pulling a week ago. Is this natural for your boost levels to go down with the intercooler installed, i'm almost positive i don't have a boost leak, i've spend all day driving around and tightening up things, it seems to work just fine. I have pictures, i'll post them later tonight. Anybody know if this is natural? I'm gonna buy the Joe P MBC, anybody had good luck with it, or any other quality MBC suggestions????
