26273, Timing, FP, Missing link??? Posted by 420aVenger, Jul-12-02 06:02 AM
Ok everything that I know on this subject is by reading posts here so correct me if I'm wrong. So apparently the SAFC messes w/ timing and makes it neccessary to retard it. I also thought I read something that using the missing link instead of my VC-2 will make timing advance more. I have 2 possible paths that I would like to go in. But first I'm going to say that I'm NOT going to be using an AFC. But I need to know if I should use the missing link instead of voltage clamp.
1) Buy an inline pump to go along w/ the Walbro. Run 106psi FP on the 30# injectors at 15 psi.
2) Get inline pump and turn up static pressure to 50psi and run richer at idle and run 98psi on 32# injectors at 16psi.
Now I know that I need to datalog it to be sure but I want to know what to expect. Do you think I will need retard at 15-16psi? What would YOU do?

You have to retard timing between 10 and 15 psi. The afc will not retard timing - it only adjusts fuel mixture. The missing link replaces your vc-1 and has the same function - it keeps your map sensor from seeing boost "voltage" which would in turn make your ecu freak out.
The only way to control timing retard (without buying a Gen VII DFI or full stand-alone) is to use the Crane HI-6 or MSD DIS-2 ignition boxes with the add-on boost refernced timing retard modules. Depending on what compression you are running you need to boost .5 to 1 degree of timing per lb of boost up to 15. After 15, you just run it!

Thanks for the reply. Just to clarify though, I know what the AFC does. I just read that when you use it you will need to retard timing at a lower boost than if you didn't use the AFC. Here's one place I can remember http://www.2gnt.com/dcforum/DCForumID16/4048.html I also read on the missing link site that since it doesn't modify the MAP signal that it will increase the need for retarding.

Missing Link shouldnt make retarding timing more important. all it is, is a check valve basically. i run 12psi daily, with the SAFC and no timing retard and have been fine for close to 2 years. i like the missing link MUCH better than any other fuel cut defencer. it doesnt modify the map signal, it just lets it operate as normal like there isnt any boost.
