2615, internals

hi. i'm thinking about going full blown turbo and i would like to be able to boost as much as i want. how much would it cost me to do the internals so that i wouldn't have to worry about anything? what is all needed, what do you recommend, and how much do they cost? and would a used 16g or 20g turbo be good? as long as it's in good condition. also, anyone want to buy a t25 turbo? only has 3000 miles on it. with bov. just got it and am not going to install it because i have a gs and it is going to cost me a lot more than i thought to put it on my car, so i figure i might as well go big. but i still don't want to spend that much. thanks for the help guys! and give me some recommendations on intercoolers. one more thing, what all will i need to buy, in case i but it seperate, besides intercooler, turbo, and bov? i have a 95 eclipse gs.
Matt

if you have a big turbo and have done internals on your car please email me so i can get some advice, or have a descent turbo, at bustrblue1@aol.com

you will also need a fuel pump, FMU, turbo piping, manifold, wastegate, boost gauge, oil lines, and downpipe. pistons are $400, rods are $600 and installation is gonna be about the same, probably a little less. you may as well get injectors ($300) and an AFC ($300)while youre doing the internals. then an EGT ($150) and A/F Gauge ($60) later on.

2617, a word about custom turbos
Posted by JasonESi_T, Mar-12-01 05:26 AM
I think it's been said here before, but turbocharging is really really tough.
(and even more expensive)

If you come on the board asking very general questions about how much the whole thing costs and what you should get, you clearly are not prepared to take on such a task. I STRONGLY recommend buying a premade system from HRC or STAR.

If you're dead serious on this, go buy Maximum Boost from Corky Bell. And then, as thick as that book is with all the technical information included, it should knock some sense in you that you should go buy a premade system. (You didn't see him custom fab a turbo system) It costs way too much to buy each component spearately as a independent buyer. These companies have already gone to the trouble of getting the best possible deal though bulk purchases. They're also providing you with instructions all the little pieces that go in-between.

Trust me guys, I'm not trying to dupe you into paying more than you want for a turbosystem. It's the cheapest way to go to buy one that's already put together. Too much anguish and pain goin' any other way.

You will have your hands FULL ENOUGH tackling a system that's already put together. It would be nothing short of a nightmare trying to put together all the parts and the how-to's in a custom setup.

The problem is not the major parts you need: FMUs,Fuel pumps, turbos, manifold ect are readily available (and it wouldn't hurt to duplicate parts ued in the kits). The problem is by the time you run back and forth looking for T fittings for the oil sender, fuel lines to install the FMU/and or pump. correct length oil lines with the proper fittings, Ts for the intercepting the vacuum lines, vacuum tubing, bending/welding piping and BOV flanges ect your car will be sitting for God knows how long and wont be any cheaper if you do it with new parts ( I really think I could put one together but the turbo is $1000 and the manifold $500, regulator $150 or $300 for adjustable, fuel pump anywhere from $100 to $200 and who knows how much all the little sh*t cost so why bother). Do like my cheap ass did. Wait for the prices to drop (like Hahns just did) or a Group buy (like Wyatt just had), buy a cheap banged up intercooler from another DSM owner upgrading, beg someone to add a BOV to you kit, get the little cheap neccessities in advance like turbo timer and gauges, drive it fore a while to see what the shortcomings are and work on it from their. One things for sure if you go to a shop, even with turbo in hands, and tell them to "turbo mu car" you'll be spending a lot more than you would with a pre fabbed kit and a lot more down time too. As for internals, Pistons are around $400, rings around $100 and rods around $650. Give or take anywhere from $50 to a couple $100.

I am in the process of installing a turbo system that is a "back yard" system if you will(a nice one), and believe me the running around never stops, and sometimes the $ for $ turns out to cost tthe same darn near. So go for a kit <cough/cough> Hahns!!!!. :)
I am very pleased with the kit as well as the on and off line help that is there if and when you need it. The only one representing Starr is Wyatt ( He can also get you a great deal), and although he knows his S^%^T, he is one person and I am sure has his hands full. Either one you get though will be awesome and a blast, and you wont regret it. Good luck!

would it be possible for me to get a super 16g or 20g turbo and get the rest of the kit seperate? would that save me some money? i want a lot of power and also reliability. which would you recommend? for all of you that have stage II kits, star and hahn, is it enough power? thanks

I agree with what the other guys have posted here. I'd recommend that you do more research into turbocharging and I certainly do not recommend building a "backyard" turbo system. It's hard enough installing and tuning premade systems, such as HRC's or Star's.

Frankly, your question is very broad. You could spend as little as $2300, and as much as your income allows, say upwards of $10,000. Because of the complexities involved in piecing together a turbo kit, installation and tuning, I'd recommend either the Hahn kits or the Star kits.

Personally, I got HRC's stage 2 turbo kit and I'm very satisfied with the kit's completeness and customer support. Just my .02 cents.

Just in case you didnt know I have a HRC stage 2, and the "backyard setup" is my buds. I like his setup, it is just very time consuming to get everything together.
