What do the bolts that hold the exhaust manifold on the head look like. HRC used to use the ones that you need a allen wrench to tighten them with. I ordered some new ones from them and I got regular bolts. Did they switch to using regular bolts that can be tightened with a socket or wrench?

I got the same thing from them. If I was you, I'd think twice about using them though. 3 of mine have broken the heads off since I put them in back in February. I will be replacing all of them with studs and nuts while I have the motor out.

What size studs and nuts are you going to use? I think I might do the same thing.

yeah Greg. what size are those studs and nuts. It will make removal and installation much easier.

mee too me wanna know :P blowing bolts out is not cool, but looks like the lock tite has held well. You can get the bolts on the sides at orchard supply. The size is M8x30 pitch 1.25 they're pretty pricey but grade 10! They come in packs of two also. For the star manifold you can't use it for the bottom left bolts cuz the head is too big, it's larger than the stock bolts. Yipes I cross threaded that one also O_o

I will probably be using 1g 4g63 studs, washers, and nuts. They're relatively cheap, and I can use 'em on both my cars. Be cautious using a high grade stud though. As the manifold and head heat up, they expand. If the stud is too *hard*, it will break instead of stretching with the manifold. I'm guessing the bolts HRC are selling now are a high strength bolt with not much give to them, that's why 3 of mine popped their heads off.

I also got my manifold studed. NO LEAKS AT ALL!! :)

we ground down the stock bolts so that they would fit around the manifold, works very well IMO. matt_95tgs did the same on his, and has never come loose..Just use a bench grinder to grind off the lips on the bolts so they will fit nicely..

I studded my manifold, and I was very very happy, it is doing a lot better than the hex head bolts, no more broken bolt heads or exhaust leaks robbing boost from me...

I'm using manifold studs and locking nuts too. They're made for the 4g63.

Add those hex-nuts to the list of HRC parts that I hate. ;)

I won't use locking nuts, but I will be drilling the nuts to safety-wire them. Even if they loosen up a little, they'll never fall off. Of course this is easier since the engine is out of the car.
