23238, Replacement for FCD & VC-1/2 Map voltage blockers
Posted by thedawg, May-28-02 04:36 AM
This was posted a while back, but they've finished developing it and it's available for sale.

http://www.synapseengineering.com/html/ml003.html

Basically, it's a pneumatic check valve that sits between the MAP sensor and the head, and prevents the MAP sensor from seeing boost. This makes the need for an electrical voltage clamp (FCD/VC) unnecessary.

It's now in stock at:

YESS MY ANSWERS ARE SOLVED!!!i called them and they said it was $60!!! i forgot who here has an extra MAP sensor they can sell me? mine is going to shit.

Thanks for posted this... I'll be picking one up instead of a VC. I love the idea!

I already have one. (I have also already posted about this as well) Tomorrow when I install my 8 injector setup (if I have the energy), it's all going in.

Ah yes, no more CEL's concerning voltage variation and no more concern whether or not the FCD is doing it's job. I bought mine for $55. It comes very nicely packaged with all the necessary bolts. It's clear that quality workmanship went into this. (I did have to wait 2-3 weeks for it though)

i just ordered one. 75 after tax and shipping..
so i wont need my vc-1 anymore, but i never had any problems with it on there. less wires now tho :)

It's a check valve. That's not a new idea.

You may want to reconsider buying from that vendor. I bought mine from Group 5 Motorsports for $55.

23245, whats better?
Posted by pn0ymahal, May-28-02 07:18 AM
i have the vc-2 now is there a difference between using this and my vc-2? i also have 315cc injecs and i leaned more then 5% on hi and corbin told me to remove the vc-2 all together since i leaned more then 5% on hi... right now i got my vc-2 on still so i dunno what to do... what advice do u guys recommend for me?

...like posted above which is better? Cuz with the voltage clamp the ECU sees the voltage at the very limit and with the check valves there is no voltage variation. So do you make more power when the voltage seees near the limit?

I can only speak from experience for both the HRC FCD and the VC-1 that I tried.

First off, the HRC voltage clamp was easy to hook up, but the voltages it clamped at seemed to vary for me. Most of the time, it clamped above 4.1x or above, but Bill Hahn assured me that this voltage level was above the 100% duty cycle rate of the fuel injectors. The VC-1 I bought from someone didn't even work, so I can not comment on that piece. (I can only sarcastically thank the person who sold it to me.)

Here's still my issue with the HRC clamp though, or any other voltage clamp that varies at its set level: If it varies at its clamping level, it puts your entire engine at risk. Especially for a stage 1-2 setup with stock injectors, where the margin of error is minimal.

I like the idea of a check valve as the one at issue here. Not only does it eliminate the static nature of the FCD, but it's just nice to have one less thing interfering with your MAP sensor voltage. It's important for that reading to be as accurate as possible. Also, let me just say that the piece appears to be top notch and a great deal better in quality than any check valve that I've ever seen. As far as check valves go, this one is definitely as deluxe as it gets for our application. Furthermore, many of us can attest to what may or may not be the maximum fuel output referenced by MAP voltage whether it be 4.2x or 4.79, but in either case, allowing your MAP sensor to send a atmospheric reading for your engine at maximum effort, except for boost, should allow for the max fuel injector output that we're looking for no matter what the voltage reading will be.

since its a check valve no need to ask for a preset voltage right? just ask for our 420a since its just a 'thing ' ...not like a vc-2 etc

I am with you on this Dino. This is basically a well designed bleeder. The Drag turbo kit(mainly honda and some others)uses bleeders so the map sensor does not see boost. They are basically pnuematic check valves. The Missing Link is also a well designed bleeder.

I will stick with electronic voltage clamping for now. I use the VC1 that came with my star kit. I have never had any problems.

Can you guys let me know how well this thing works and if it gets rid of the CEL.
I have VC2 now and I want this thing but I want to be assured that it is going to eliminate fuel cut,

Here's some more info the guy at Synapse emailed me:

How the ML003 works:

1) Completely blocks any positive manifold pressure (boost) from reaching the MAP sensor.

2) Retains MAP sensor's reference to WOT/atmospheric pressure at wide open throttle.

3) Allows car to adjust for and compensate for changes in barometric pressure and changes in altitude.

These are all things that your voltage limiter does not perform. It simply tells the ECU the same voltage anytime it is in boost, irrespective of actual baro pressure or change in altitude.

Effects encountered in testing that you should be very aware of:
The ECU actually thinks it is running stock so it starts to introduce timing advance again into the system predictably and the car runs much better. This is great if you are running nothing but high octane race gas. However, as you should know, timing advance makes power but also produces detonation. So when using the ML003, please be very aware that you need to have something in place to eliminate detonation. Here are your options:

1) Retard the factory timing a couple of degrees to eliminate detonation depending on boost level being run

2) Use a timing retard mechanism based on boost, like the MSD BTM (a little challenging to install on Distributorless ignition)

3) Lower your compression ratio (We will be introducing a head gasket in the near future that will reduce the static compression ratio in your engine so that you don't necessarily have to rebuild with pistons just to safely run boost)

4) Employ some water injection, as can be found from www.aquamist.co.uk

5) Run high octane gas when timing is not retarded

The Missing Link for the Eclipse works very well for improving performance over that of the Voltage Clamped method. However, when you turbocharge any engine, please keep detonation in check. You can run very, very lean and never detonate, however, a little too much compression or a slight bit much of timing advance and there goes your engine.

23253, whoever uses one post

well whoever gets one of these post what u think... if u got the hrc or vc-1/2 also would be good as far as comparing them... i want someone to try it out and if its ok i will get one...

...but the lower compression ratio HG already exists. I use one. It does the exact opposite of milling your head, it just adds volume to your combustion chamber

i just installed mine last night, so i'll check a few things tonight when i drive home, like for codes and to see if the map sees boost
and let you guys know if its better than my vc-1
23256, RE: It seams to work
Posted by speedracer21, Jun-04-02 02:18 AM
well last night and this morrning i boosted around town about 25-30 miles total and no map code, no stutter from the map seeing boost, map in the data logger showed 30 hg at boost (not sure what that means) but all in all it seams to work nicely

Mine goes on today. I also will see how it all goes and report back.

let us know how it turns out for the next couple weeks... i plan to get one i hate all the wires everywhere... plus also can u check what the voltage is for you map sensor once in boost? im not sure if it would be different from u guys and me since you got the dfi etc

dude the missing link didn't work for me either. right now i'm replacing the MAP again and we'll see if it goes ok.
