23204, Rod/main bearing question
Posted by 992gnt, May-27-02 12:29 PM
Has anyone replace the rod and main bearings without pulling the head off? I roasted the #1 rod bearing today, and I want to take apart as little as possible, ie. bedplate, con-rods, and crank. Once the crank is turned, I'll just drop it back in and bolt everything back up. Sound do-able???

Any idea how it happened?

Not yet. I'm guessing oil starvation though, from the looks of the bearing. Not sure why it wasn't getting oil yet either.

You got to pull the block out to pull the crank because it would be hard as hell to try to pull it from the bottom. Mic the crank and if it it scarred use emry cloth sand papper strips and put in a new rod bearing. it is much 100% easier to put in a rod bearing. drop the pan unbolt the rod bolts and push the piston up a little, make sure your #1 piston is down in the chamber all the way.
